Just picked this up today at a moving/Estate sale:

Almost walked past it! :shocking: Actually I did, heading for the garage. I spotted it just as I was getting ready to pay for the other stuff I'd found.

Got it for $20! :rocker:

44 Lb Peter Wright! Good rebound, and not too beat!

This one may motivate me to setup the new, larger, E-tank! I'm thinking BLO after the rust is gone...

I wouldn't even hesitate to pay $350 for that.

^^^I'm at your mercy. Any help is appreciated.

What does it look like under the base? Flat or sort of depression...oval, hourglass, etc? Clean up the front foot (under the horn) with a wire wheel and look for any kind of numbers or letters. Look on the waist, under the horn for a number stamped into it. Check those and let us know.

A number of anvils had that basic shape so it can get tricky.

It does appear to have a casting seem in the middle of the feet. That could make it a cast steel anvil like Columbian, West, Vandium Steel, or several others. Still, some wrought iron anvils actually had a cast base that they then forged wrought iron on (and finally a tool steel top plate), so it's possible to see them with casting lines there as well.

The bottom is flat. I think I need to wire wheel the entire anvil and get the crud off of it. Hopefully I can see something by doing that.

Yeah, it's amazing how nothing will be visible on an anvil, hit it with a wire wheel and suddenly you find lettering. Heck, I've bought them with so much crud it filled up chisel marks on the face!

A flat bottom largely rules out Hay-Budden, Trenton and Arm & Hammer, although some very early Trentons had a flat bottom (they were imported).

Here's my 93# HayBud. Base is solid DugFir wrapped in rough cut 1x6. Ball bearing bounce test is over 90%.

I guess there's a first time for everything!

Ok, so here are all five lined up. All the European anvils I've seen seem to have the same basic shape (including the legs), but all of these have slight differences and/or different markings, so I'm guessing they are all different makes. Mine is front and center. I also got the hardy anvil and the yellow base.

You can see the ball peen that I was using for the ring test, as well as the wire brush, chalk, and magnifying glass I was using to look for markings. The large ball bearing is in my pocket at this point, I think, but I certainly used it to my benefit.

And here it is back home, on the base, and with the hardy anvil. At 10 lbs (5 kg), the hardy anvil seems like it's a bit large for this little guy. I thought the anvil was 30 kg, but turns out it's only 25 kg or 55 lbs.

Markings cast into the side - it's a "5" and below that looks like an "P L P" - but the "L" looks more like an upside down "F". If that's the case, it could be a PFP Peddinghaus anvil; 100% forged steel, German made.

Didn't have a soda can handy, but here it is next to a can of Kroil so you can tell the relative size.

Thanks,

Scott

I plan to bring this back to the states (we're moving to San Antonio in August), so if anyone in the market, keep me in mind. In a perfect world, I would trade up to a larger vintage U.S. or British anvil.

Scott

Here’s my 125 pound Arm and Hammer from Columbia Anvil and Forging. Date of manufacture 1919.

I still have to fab anvil mounting brackets.

Your anvil looks awesome.

What kind of prices per pound (or kilo) do used anvils command in Norway?

This is my new-to-me 110# Swedish Kohlswa London pattern anvil sitting on a custom fabricated base. The legs are full of sand and the base weighs as much as the anvil.

That’s beautiful. A Kohlswa came up for sale locally several years ago. It was only around 80 pounds and the fellow was asking WAY too much for it so I gave it a pass. Had good rebound and a beautiful “ring” though...

My metal projects are small hobbyist stuff.
Cleaned up a SEARS Anvil which is perfect for a small workbench setup in progress.
