I can't wait for a couple of those collections to become available and prices will drop to a normal price again.

Sandman: is that Vises collection he bought from the guy that wrote the book American Anvils or is it Matchless' like TJ mentioned?

nice looking Christmas presents. do you have a friend that helps you get stuff from Germany in his suitcase or GEESH the shipping costs on those would break my bank?

thanks for sharing!!

Thrum: that is about the perfect size anvil and even though I'm 100% Norwegian I'd buy that one too and bring her home if it didn't break the bank.

nice find!!

ALL: so I don't have to google it can you refresh my memory? i'm preparing myself in case i actually see another anvil for sale in the wild.

if an English anvil is stamped 1 1 8 does that mean:

first 1 is 112 pounds unit so 2 would be 224 pounds?

second 1 is 24 pounds per unit?

and i know the last # is just pounds

hence the 1 1 8 would be 144 pounds?

thanks

Got my first anvil! It's a small one but not too sure about info on it. I tried to post a picture. I can see what I think is Manufacturing and the numbers 21. Anyone have any ideas? Seems to be in pretty good condition otherwise.

I have a few steel plates I use when I need to pound on something, but this is my only "real" anvil. It was the product of a collaborative project between my High School's wood shop & metal shop classes back around 1964 or so.

The purpose was to get us involved in a production & manufacturing process. We made jigs & fixtures for cutting the wood base, finishing it, holding the anvil in place while the retaining brads were pressed into place, made the molds to sand cast the aluminum anvil, melted & poured the aluminum, etc. As HS students, we probably didn't appreciate the efforts of the teachers who coordinated the whole thing as much as we should have.

Drives
Its Hundred weight (CWT), quarter Hundred weight, single pounds.
So 112, 28 and single lb's

So your example is 112, 28, 8 totals to 148lb

They also have a ratcheting vise. The booth is only 20 minutes from me...I might stop in on Friday and take a look.

Bought what I thought was a small homemade rail anvil, but after cleaning off the rust, up popped a name on side of it.

Has anyone came across a similar one, as I'm trying to get some history on the maker/manufacture/time period of it.

It definitely has been beat up, but there is something about it which makes me want to keep it in the shop.

Mike

No clue on the info but I like it too I would just grind the top flat and smooth and use it. Never know maybe one day the messed up edges may come in handy

I treated myself to this Ridgid-Peddinghaus 275 pound anvil to give my vises and benches a break. I was set to build a base out of 4x4s, but then found a section of 14x14x3/8" tube at the scrap yard. The cast iron wheels are ones I had collected quite a while ago. There's a hole on the side opposite the wheels for a pry bar or pipe to be inserted to be able to cart the stand around. I'll need to come up with a way to deaden the stand's ring without adding to much weight.

Very nice! Fill it with sand and use a longer pipe [emoji2]

Here's the "official" done picture for my anvil stand. I pinned up one of our retired flags to cover up the ugly garage door, and as I was about to snap a picture, I asked my son if he'd like to be in it. He said "Yes" and then ran off to get one of his Lego creations to show me on the anvil. I used some kind of special effect setting on my phone camera to make the picture look "old" or "industrially" or whatever you'd call it.

I ended up not filling the base with sand or concrete. I tried to deaden some of the ring by coating the inside with rubber roofing mastic and a layer of cloth towels. It didn't do much, but I don't think it's that loud anyway. I had also read about about putting silicone caulk between the anvil and stand to deaden the sound, so I tried doing the same by sandwiching in a couple layers of EPDM sheet roofing. It kinda, sorta worked. I coated the stand with boiled linseed oil and let a blower-type fan hit it for a day to dry it out.

I'm still waiting on a little propane forge to arrive. So far I've pounded a few bolt heads square and I've started cold-forming an 1/8x2" band around the horn for a hanging light project.
