Unfortunate they're cheapening their tools. Makes me want to get rid of my Carlyle bit sockets and ratcheting wrenches.
Earlier this week I ordered the P-Rex plier set they have on sale for the quarter and out of curiosity I added a 1/2 drive 3/4" socket from the new Carlyle line to the order. Got the two items today and the socket does not instill confidence towards the new line. Doesn't look as nice as the previous socket for the same kind and as you can see on the tag "Product of Cambodia, Finished in China". I was hoping that at most they had switched to a cheaper supplier in Taiwan, but apparently that was too much to hope for.
That said, the socket might be just fine, but not at the price they charge for it. At the time of order, I paid $2.59 and at the time of this post the price is up to $6.29. For some reason earlier this week, a bunch of the new Carlyle tools were priced fairly low but are currently at a noticeably higher price. Currently I could buy the same socket from the old line for $5.69.
It might not be all gloom and doom since some of the other tools on the website look to just be the same tool with a new logo and color, but the socket is still disappointing. One because while the old Taiwan made sockets weren't anything too special, the seemed to be well made, had undercuts which were nice, and in 1/4 and 3/8 you could get mid depth. I thought they were a step above many of the other imported sockets. It's also disappointing since it just looks like they are cheapening up some of the line while not making the tools any cheaper which was kind of the problem in the first place. Generally the tools themselves were good, they just needed to be more competitive. HF seems to have got it figured out with Icon.

Their 12" adjustable isby far my favorite.
Have many other brands, including $$$ Snap On and the Carlile is the perfect weight, size, jaw thickness, etc.
The Snap Ons are like 400lb
Made by Proxene in Taiwan. Good stuff.Would that be this?
Is it made in Spain? Reminds me of all the other wrenches made Irega.
How much were the turtle jaws?I ordered some items from my local store and popped in there today. We were talking about the rebrand and I showed this thread to the guys there. None of them were surprised sadly. They laughed about the COO.
As others have said, I’m pretty disappointed. Granted, it’s NAPA so my expectations were low. I’m hoping what I have now holds up.
Anyways, I took advantage of the clearance deals on a few screwdrivers and a ratchet that has yet to arrive.
Also bought a few things out of Real Deals. I didn’t realize that the line clamp pliers were a 2-pack. Going to return one of them.
$15 for 2.How much were the turtle jaws?
Same, but for some reason they're trying to charge me shipping online to get them at my local store. You guys are great at spending my money - in for the hose clamp vise.
I have this set and love it !
I looked back at my receipt. Looks like I paid $15 as well.
I have the HF one, but I'm about to have this one lol.I have this set and love it !
They usually don’t charge shipping for store pickup. Usually an item that requires shipping isn’t available for store pickup, only ship to home. I ordered over $35 to get the free shipping. I ordered both sizes of the hose clamp vise plus the mini bolt cutters. The smaller hose clamp vise is only available in a few places, which required shipping for me.Same, but for some reason they're trying to charge me shipping online to get them at my local store.
I purchased this today for $15 also. I have been eyeing the roto bit rachet for a few years but couldn't justify the price. It was on sale for about 40% off. I think I paid $54 instead of $96 (list price) which is still about $25 too expensive in my mind, but the one in the store felt very smooth, and I thought a roto bit ratchet might be handy - and i've got most of the other original carlyle ratchets including the first style cornwell clone roto ratchets in 1/4, 3/8, and 1/2" so I figured I'd cap off the collection with this one. Funny over the last 10 years I've scored most of my carlyle stuff on a deep discount sale. Even though this bit ratchet was "on sale" I don't think I paid much more for my 1/4 and 3/8 locking flex ratchets. Even my 1/2" long locking flex ratchet I think I got for around $100? Most of my remaining tool purhases will be online or HF... Napa has just gotten far too expensive for import tools, especially now that the quality looks to be going down. I really liked the colors and balance of quality and cost until recently.

I just discovered those hose clamp vises looking through the hot deals catalog last night. Unfortunately, the small one wasn't available for me to buy, but I did get the bigger one. They look really handy, so I'll likely pick up the smaller "Lisle" (appear to be the maker of the Carlyle) one from JB Tools.
The picture appears to show a Lisle.Yes, AFAIK, Lisle was the original seller of those hose clamp vises- I bought one from them years ago when they first came out. I'm sure some of the tool trucks rebrand them, but this was the first time I've seen one that wasn't Lisle. There is also a Japanese company, KTC?, that makes something very similar but has a "waffle" type jaw instead of a V.
I think assortment is pretty much the same, but yeah, for that price I'm def upgrading. Ordered my brother and dad one as well.I would take the Napa set over the HF set. More options and more useful options.
I'm not 100% sure, but I think it's the same set sold under Duralast at AutoZone.
I bought the Duralast set years ago. The 1/4" swivel/universal saved my ****. Glad I had it. I'm almost tempted to buy the Napa set even though I don't need it.

The hose clamp pliers are easier to use. Where the vises work well is in tight areas. They are 1/4 inch drive. So, youAre the hose clamp vises better than a set of hose clamp pliers?

can use an extension.
You can get them into places you are not going to get pliers. I primarily work on Asian vehicles. Mainly Nissan, Honda and Toyota.Good to know. They look huge in the photos. I work on mainly powersports stuff these days, so quarters are tight. I mostly use the Astro clamp pliers with the long cable. Can't recommend those enough.
