Anyone have any experience with the carlyle branded tool boxes?

My local napa had a tool cart that they said is 379, but comes with 300 dollars of your choice of tools - I didn't have time to look too carefully and didn't want to get loaded down with enough tools to fill the whole thing when the whole reason I'd buy a bigger box is that I've got a handful of absolutely unusably overflowing small boxes.

But they said they'd have various other boxes/chests in stock soon, just sold some, and they're not bad prices. Guy said they're made by snap-on, presumably just as untrue as the apparently common claim that carlyle hand tools are related to snap-on, I'd think they're probably of a similar caliber (so, good for the price) though, right?

I did play with a drawer, was ball bearing and felt very nice and tight and smooth and easy and un-bindable and sturdy.

Opinions? I can't really find anything about them online, even a mention, and napa's site kind of *****, as always. They gave me a catalogue, but when I got home I realized all it has is homak, apparently the carlyle brand on boxes is new.

I've read everyone say that, but their prices didn't look much worse than other tiwanese knockoff brands.

I mean, I'm not super interested in the sockets, ratchets, or wrenches, I already have a few sets of american sockets, wrenches, and the like, as well as a full set of duralast snap-off's, and they all treat me well, I've no complaint, other than bad chrome on a few - but the steel is very good, and doesn't rust anyway, so if I wanted more clone **** I'd just get duralast so i would all be on the same warranty account as I already have - I hate keeping receipts around, and autozone keeps track of it for you, if they care to check, I've got the impression napa are sort of warranty nazis, or totally unresponsive, at least here.

So yeah, that's why I'm holding off to see the other stuff - I really don't want an open "service cart" anyway, even though it had nice drawers - I want a medium sized traditional rolling chest, that's cleaner looking, doesn't snag stuff, keeps shavings and drillings and **** out of your tools, and has a slightly smaller footprint (despite having much more square footage of tool storage) than a cart to wheel around and still have complete access to most tools even in areas with limited space. (and it would fit in my hatchback a lot more easily.)

How much were those flare nut wrenches? I want a set but can't afford SO. (I heard that SK/Cman/HF were very prone to flexing open).

My SK's don't flex open, however, I have seen HF's explode instead of flex.

I haven't seen any boxes or carts branded Carlyle at my NAPA but, they have several HOMAK set ups that don't look bad.

But I liked it so much, I have a 3/8" QR on the way...

It was a blue tool cart. with a lower shelf or shelves or whatever, a lid on a gas shock, and under that maybe 3 or 4 layers of drawers, some full width, some not.

Large carlyle script on a decal or something, I think it was on the underside of the top lid. Not a little badge, but like three inches tall, clearly readable across the store.

Those are not impact.... impacts don't have chrome tops.

It's just a different type of steel more suited to the pressures a screwdriver bit takes.

I mean, you wouldn't want a chromed screw tip, for obvious reasons.

Impact hand drivers have blacked tips that are interchangable in one yoke, which is also blacked - in my experience, anyway.

Anyone notice the chrome scuffs easily on the sockets and the detent isn't quite in the right spot for SO or Proto ratchets?

That's typical for Taiwan made sockets like Kobalt and GearWrench. You go to snap the socket onto the square drive and the socket goes past the detent before bottoming out and stopping. Then after you have the socket on, when you go to press down on it, it bottoms out and then springs back at you.

Maybe I'm just young and dumb, but I thought the detent was supposed to be a bit before bottoming out, so that the top of your socket wouldn't be riding against your ratchet? I thought if you cut the drive off directly at the top of the socket, the piece you cut off would be a cube.

And I thought my snap-on and proto were exactly the same, though I have no carlyle to compare them against.

Tried to go back today, got there after they closed - I'll try monday or tuesday.

this makes no sense the tip thats driving the screw is not chrome?
and all the sockets sold with snap on impact drivers are chrome i cant see ive seen a industrial finish bit socket from snap on or any other quality brand

So in the debate about hand impact drivers and chrome based sockets, I couldn't resist looking for myself.

That said, I looked up Snap-ons set and indeed it has chrome bases and vapor blasted grey tips.

I learned something new today.

They do have some very nice Homak carts there. I was eyeballing a couple.

Haven't got them yet, but I'm planning on ordering both an sae and a metric set of the 0 degree offset long box wrenches. Il get the sets and then try to complete them as best I can. They're not cheap... But not snap on pricey either.

I don't know if this is at all Napa's or not. But I emailed my local store on Monday to see what their price was on these:

They emailed back and said $119 (same as online - but at least I knew prices are the same, not different versus store to store), and that they had a tool sale starting the next day for two weeks and would check the price tomorrow.

They emailed back this morning and said $76.83!!! I emailed back to order them! They then emailed back and said they'd be in tomorrow! I am off work tomorrow but will be getting them Thursday.

So just an FYI if your thinking of getting some tools see if your store is running the discount.

been lurking along time so thought it was time, i am 60 miles from the nearest sear's or harbor freight etc, in the heart of Appalachia where napa is king. we have no snap-on, mac or cornwell trucks that service this area matco will arrange a meet next to the interstate on his way to another area so i have alot of napa tools and equipment over the past 30+ years. carlyle seems to be a quality tool so far time will tell. i still miss the nht line i just warrantied a new Britain 1/2 ratchet for a carlyle but if it breaks i can have another one by 3:00 or no later than next day so napa is good for me.

IMO, should have got HF or whatever the cheapest stubby option is in your immediate area. Could have got some real nice ratchets or a long set of antislip wrenches for around the same money.

Most cheap stubbies are too short (strange I know but they really are) only go through 3/4 and 19mm and skip sizes. HF only goes through 5/8 and 15mm making them almost entirely useless. When I need a short wrench it's to spin a hydraulic fitting off or jam against a frame rail as impact backup, most all of my uses are larger sizes and Carlyle has up to 1" and 26mm

Just IMO but my set of "cheap brand" stubby wrenches is in the junk drawer for a reason. I managed to spread the jaws on a couple of them...

. Nothing like trying to hold a 1" long pttern combo while trying to balance an impact. Lol. Love my stubbies for this same reason. I've taken a few ccombos I don't havve in a stubby and made a stubby open end and a stubby box end out of one wrench
