Well easy way to tell is if they were in cellophane.

Both of them where wrapped in cellophane. The Ratchets had it over the plastic cover/case I believe, with the product/COO cardboard still attached on the bottom. Same with the wrenches, as I remember cutting a small crease along the length of the tray. Again with product and COO information cardboard underneath the cellophane. Unfortunately I was excited to get into these, or I'd have left it that way before opening at least the ratchets

How's the 3/8 holding up after a few months? Still haven't been able to bite the bullet on it.

I haven’t used it a ton. The length just makes it awkward for some jobs, so it hasn't become my go-to first grab ratchet. I REALLY like it though, based in the feeel of my first few uses, I can’t imagine any issues with reliability.

Who knows, but they're pretty good at offering variety so I imagine they will keep both options.

I for one dig the 6pt. In a perfect world where no-one broke look bolts with ratcheting wrenches, it wouldn't matter, but we know we all do that ****. You're laying under the vehicle already and you're not about to get your big *** up off the floor for the 9000th time to get get a standard combo when you've got the ratcheting on in the right size with ya already. :lol_hitti

Amen.... seems to be a taboo thing on here to admit it. I work with 7 other techs every day, i have never seen anybody go get a standard wrench if they already have the ratcheting one close by. So 6pt is good.. Nobody babys them..if they break...they break..warranty time. I wont put a pipe on one or anything like that but im not gonna tiptoe around them all day. Why would Carlyle, SK, and some others even make them 6pt unless they intended for them to be used in some hi torque situations...??

Exactly. I assume you've seen the videos on youtube of people breaking Gearwrenches? It takes a **** of a lot to strip them out. They aren't delicate little snowflakes like ratcheting wrenches were 20 years ago.

That being said, the manufacturers probably stick by their recommendations not to break loose fasteners with them since it reduces warranty claims.

Picked up my tune up ratchet today ! Quality looks great ! I will put it through the paces and see how it does! Also pictured is my other 3/8 locking flex head. I like these ratchets for the sale price! They are a great buy. I would like to put some super lube in the head. Has anyone opened one of them up before ? They don’t have screw on covers like most ratchets do

For those wondering, I picked up that 25" 1/2 ratchet that was $40 bucks today. I took it apart and cleaned all the grease off and lubed it with my Jeep front diff oil. It's a steal at $40

Upgraded my wire cutters and crimps a month ago. Figured I’d post it here.

DDC9999, do you have any pics of the crimp those make? I’ve been looking for a crimper with the stripper on the hadle side of the pivot, and the crimper on the other side. It’s too difficult to get the crimper on the second crimp of a **** splice when the crimper is on the handle.

Yea, that’s why I got them. They are a copy of the Snap On design. Can’t comment on quality of Snap On, but this crimps great (measured with a multimeter to test) and strips without nicking a wire. Best part is the jaws are pretty stiff like they aren’t broken in well. This lets you close the jaws on a connector to lock it into the tool, then you can place it over the wire easily and crimp it as soon as it’s in a spot you like. In makes crimping easier, especially a wire that’s a pain to wrangle. No pictures of crimps sadly, and I’m out of all my spares. I may pick up more at some point at which point I can waste a couple to take a pic for you. I got these too with a $5 off coupon. Racked up a bunch of them cause when I signed up for a Napa account I got a one time 20% coupon including stuff on sale which I used for a big purchase to upgrade out of my old USA craftsman ratchets then came in one of those mechanic tool sets they sold. They were great for almost a decade now, but they always were sloppy and at this point just feel blown out.

I’ll try and take some pictures of those too when I get a chance and post them here in between the Playoffs today. Figured that guy who got the used ratchets can see what they should come like when buying them.

You talked me into them. I’ve been plotting thw purchase of a new set of metric combo wrenches. I think it’s time to pull the trigger on those and the crimpers at the same
time.

Their wrenches are fantastic! I have the flank drive copies with the teeth and they have got me out of some tight jambs before. You will like them!

Well as I figured, the local napa near me wouldn't help me at all. I even ordered a pair of screwdrivers and he called me about 2 minutes later and said the last set they have was already "spoken for" and I'm pretty sure he told me that same garbage two years ago. I asked him about exchanging/return said tools and he said they wouldn't/couldn't. I ended up going to the napa the next town over and got my screwdrivers and he ordered me the ratchet without issue, but didn't want to exchange/return the wrenches which I figured they wouldn't. They actually have Carlyle on the shelves and I looked at the regular combos with had excellent chrome, no nicks/scratches and looked at mine again when I got home. Very beat up in comparison. Should I return them online, or use them? Been using my Co-workers Matco ones a fair amount so I can certainly use these, but I can certainly wait as well...

~23.50 after tax, cant argue with that. Very nice and very cheap!

These are what I got all for 20% off plus they were all on sale at the time for the most part. I checked and it was all $173 before tax. That’s about $35 per ratchet. Obviously the roto and the long flex boost up that avg price.

I got the 72 tooth, quick release, metal handled ratchets in 1/4”, 3/8”, and 1/2”. I can take or leave a soft handle on a ratchet and I like having my simple ratchets without since they take up less space.

The 100 tooth roto is basically a ratcheting screwdriver that’s also long enough to turn sockets with ease.

The last in a Long, locking flex head 3/8” ratchet. Figured this would be more useful at this size then the roto since the head is way smaller and most bolts I use a 3/8” are on cars and I won’t be flipping the ratchet to spin it like a screwdriver all that often. The 1/4” roto is still nice and small and more versatile in a roto design to me.

I haven’t opened any up. I honestly have barely used them other than the 1/4” roto head I have just because I don’t have any indoor garages I can use so I try to wrench like crazy in the spring summer and fall, then stay warm in the winter. I’m always in a friend or family member’s driveway fixing there stuff (for free), and busted knuckles hurt enough when you’re hands haven’t frozen over. God bless you professional technicians and craftsman who have to work outside when it’s brutally cold.

I meant to say. If you look though there appears to be a clip below the drive piece on the head. My guess is the disassembly starts by prying on that somehow. The other ratchets use screws and look simpler.

I’ve seen a couple people say something about a 20% coupon. Where did I miss it?

Two are referenced. One comes from an email that just came out to people with a Napa rewards account (anyone can get one, even non pros). It was a weird email and had a follow up email clarify some stuff. I’ll screenshot it below.

Other 20% coupon I know of is when you first sign up for a rewards account, I got a 20% off one time purchase coupon that was valid for like a month or so. Not sure if they still do it but I only got my rewards account like two months ago so they might still do it. I suppose it could have been a random promo at the time and it just coincided with me signing up. Just telling you what I know. Good luck.

I have these and they work great. I had the snap on versions and lost them. I didn't want to spend a lot only to lose them again. I honestly cant tell any difference in quality whatsoever. For the price they are awesome. Snap on versions are USA made and these are Taiwan made. I do like the snap on grips better but other than that there's no difference in performance

Those two ratchets are a steal at the discount right now. I don’t need that 1/2” though enough to grab it, though I’ve tried to convince myself I do haha. There are still too many little things I still wanted to get like a wood chisel, small hacksaw, and a file or two. Not to mention Milwaukee power tools lol. M12 Stubby, M12 Polisher/Sander, M18 Heat Gun... one can dream. By the time I have cash for most of those they will probably be on the next gen anyways Lol.

Hope you enjoy what you bought! They look fantastic. The magnetic screwdriver set looked great at the store. Those should be pretty useful for awkward automotive work or getting in those awkward screws when you are down a hand holding something like hanging stuff.

I'm annoyed, what a ****** experience LOL. Minnesota Napa owners also ****, for anyone in Minnesota, avoid the northern metro Napas.

Now I'm on to returning things through Napa online and they want me to get a Return Goods Authorization Number and their customer supports not open of course, so now I gotta call during my work day. Get a shipping label emailed to me. Print it. Drive to UPS to ship it back to them, and wait to be credited so I can buy the same tool over again. Should have just bought something I could see first hand I suppose, **** me.

The screwdrivers I got are nice, so that's something. Sorry to rain on your parade, glad to see everyones getting new not used tools :D

"Participating NAPA Stores can process returns and exchanges of NAPA Online purchases. To find a participating store near you, use our Store Locator. The NAPA stores listed in the Store Locator should accept returns from NAPA Online purchases, and can initiate a credit to the credit card that was used for the original online purchase." :headshake

Edit; Sorry I was being a victim today. Got my ratchets exchanged, no used ones in this set. Going to just keep the "new or used" ratchet wrenches and put them into service tomorrow so I don't have to deal with it anymore. Hopefully I get to use them a bunch, I'll feel less bad about it.

Stopped by a Napa in a local suburb I haven't been to before. Decided just to see how much Carlyle they have on the shelf. I was not going to buy anything.

But the bastards got me again. I decided to go see what I thought of the screwdrivers they had on open stock, knowing they had a deal going on the set, and I really liked the handles, so I couldn't pass it up. I still prefer the handle design on the CMAN Professionals I have, but these are real nice, and can't be beat for $21.

Had to snag the spark plug ratchet too, Carlyle comfort grip ratchet on the cheap? Yessir

Side note, their adjustable wrenches are sweet! They're super tight, like almost no slop in them at all. Whenever I decide to buy a larger one to keep around (I already have 2 10" ones that are good) it will be a Carlyle for sure.

Glad it mostly worked out for you. Trust me, next time just find a Napa you like the most dealing with, and reserve online for store pickup. If you do it like that, even if you got brand new tools and just didn’t like the fee of them you can return them. This is my go to with tools since they are so feel dependent and everyone is different with what they like.

talk to me about the 24 inch long 1/2 drive ratchet.

How do you like the 48 tooth ratcheting action?

If you've used it, how bad does it flex?

What do you like about it aside from price?

What don't you like about it?

Thanks,

I'm actually so frustrated with these ratchets. I opened them up to lube them (Good thing, not a drop of oil or grease) and one of them has some AWFUL ******* ball inside the head and I've wasted far to much time trying to get this back together.

Anyone want a 3 piece ratchet set, 40 dollars shipped. Brand new.

I looked up a while ago about what they lubricate these ratchets with and I remember it’s more of an oil than a grease, most likely due to the higher tooth count. No clue what you saw when you opened them since mine felt fine out of the box. Lol honestly if I was you I’d just say this line of tools isn’t for you for whatever reason. You been through a lot of bs. There’s plenty of brands out there that are as good, and to you, probably better. Sorry bud.

Unfortunately, Those ratchets aren't Carlyle's best effort.:wtf:

Their 90 tooth ratchets are great as are their 72 tooth quick release models.

I would like to see their 90 tooth ratchets available with all metal handles though.

Unfortunately, it will probably be a couple weeks before I can put it through some paces :-(

So...you should just buy one!! haha

Hopefully someone here can chime in on their experience with it...For the price, and what I project to be my own infrequent use...it was a no-brainer purchase for me.

I got it back together and it feels pretty great now. I know there's other good brands, but on sale those Metric Flex ratcheting wrenches where to good to pass up and the ratchets I bought more for the tray (I like to keep my box organized and trays are a major plus) and less so for the ratchets themselves. I'm sure they'll be ok for now, at 50 dollars I shouldn't complain.

I've got their 90T 3/8th, been a good ratchet forsure, and a few steps above these. I also wish they had them with all metal handles tho, I'm not a comfort grip fan much at all.

I got it this one put back together, had to clip the spring a hair and I know some people recommend that on certain ratchets, so not worreid about it. Feels pretty solid now. To bad I broke off one of the T10s on the 3/8th ratchet, just hand tight with a Snap on Screwdriver... Just how my week went, its all good :)

I swear, you've had more bad luck with Carlyle in two days than anyone I know has...put together. :shocking:

I recall taking apart all my Caryle ratchets (all P90s) and lubricating them with superlube, but I don't recall what they had in them. It was oil for sure, not grease, but I don't recall how much or how thin it was. I know with the superlube they're pretty darn sweet. Althought, the snap ring was a bit of a PITA if memory serves.

What's the scoop on the 60 tooth models not being good? I don't have any of them.

I have those same lesser tooth ratchets just with the quick release as well as the 72 tooth qr soft grip ones. They honestly feel very comparable. I’d have a hard time even telling they were different teeth counts. They aren’t as nice as the soft grip locking flexes obviously, but they were way nicer than other wrenches I tried at that price point. They all had very low backdrag and felt sturdy. They were wayyy better than the USA craftsman ratchets I had for sure, even when those were brand new. You’d probably think it felt mostly like a gear wrench honestly, depending on the user maybe better or worse, but it definitely doesn’t feel like there are metal balls bouncing around the pawl.

I’m sure some people like other things more, but it sounds like this poor guy is just getting loads of defective products plus hasn’t Napa’s with bad quality control and customer service.

Its ok, its just how my week went lol. We got beat up at work all week long and then my tools all ended up being a nightmare. My Gedore wrenches (that DHL wants me to sign for) never showed up even tho I was suppose to be around to sign for them. Guaranteed Delivery Jan 11th, signature required. Then my Carlyle tools showed up used.

I dont have any complaints on these, they feel like most other 48-60T ratchets to me tho, nothing exceptional but not bad.

When it rains it pours lol. Happy things are moving in the right direction.

For anyone whose lubed up the ratchets, did you use super lube (basically a silicone grease and for some super lubes it’s also dielectric) or if you used an oil like Barristol or 3-in-1. And more importantly did it make it better or worse? Pretty sure Carlyle specifies an oil based but I can think of many examples where there’s better alternatives than OEM.

Lastly, guessing snap ring pliers are useful here or are they essential? I’ve always put off buying those.

I put a small amount of Superlube in my P90s. Didn't gunk it in there. Makes the ratchet a little quieter, but I don't think there was any difference in performance.

Ordered the $40 24” long 46(?) tooth 1/2” ratchet yesterday. Patiently waiting for it to hit the store.

I’ll post a pic of it and my current Carlyle collection. I may grab the $20 screwdriver set and the wiring pliers set when I pick the ratchet up.

How are the socket holding up long term?
