So to make up for yesterday's disappointments, this morning I picked up a few wrenches at the flea market. The 3729 Zenel is interesting because it is marked PWA 1114, appears to be plain steel, with HR (Dec1940) date code. Pratt Whitney - what does the 1114 mean, and did it vary by wrench size?
The H16 seems to have a bit of cadmium lingering on it. Date code AU (Jan1943) and "WS" stamped on it. "WS"? What's that? Not marked Zenel. I also posed it with an Outline H16.
Also got a Zenel H12, slightly cleaner stamp than the one I previously posted, this one date CT (Mar1942). Got a couple CV DOEs with the old sizes. I was thinking of Twertsy, but he's looking for ones older than these, as they both have date codes. And an ignition wrench.
Really looking for 585s today, but not seeing them. It was bitter March again this morning, and I stupidly dressed for May. Made it hard to dig to the bottom of trays of tiny wrenches. Hopefully the weather will come to its senses.
One DOE I didn't buy, because the pitting was so bad, was a Buffum Louisiana MO with the ******** stamped on the back of one head. So pitted I at first thought it said BluePoint Louisiana!

Proto LA are the eariler Protos, after then Lawsuit/name change. Not sure when that swiched back to USA, as Plvmb switched in 39? :dunno:

Bonney was a major Pratt & Whitney Aircraft supplier, before, during, and after the war. 1114 is a PWA stock number, and yes, they were unique to wrench types and sizes.

Here’s a link to a 34-page PDF...
http://www.navy.gov.au/sites/default/files/documents/438.pdf

It’s a 1943 Australian Navy Admiralty Fleet Order, but it contains US Naval Aircraft Toolkits. A very handy PWA collecting reference. Also includes other NAF tool-sets and suppliers (lots of Plomb and Williams).

Date code AU (Jan1943) and "WS" stamped on it. "WS"? What's that?
That looks like an owner's mark to me.

I was snooping around an auction taking place without time or inclination to bid, and spotted this Craftsman Underline DOE with "Z" or "N" forged-in code. Is that a known manufacturer code?

Edit - since then, picked up two underline does with the CI code. Twins, though one has "N4" forged in, and the other forged lettering is spread different.

And I got this with a small toolbox. No markings on either side, except for this "D". Any ideas?

There is something about this wrench... maybe it is the balance, I dunno, but I like it. It might be a little short for the size fasteners it would be used on.

Woo hoo! finally completed my kit of Bridgeport Hy-Bar offset DOEs. Well, sort of; still have to keep and eye out for a red hinged clip for them.
Kind of amusing that they are fractional on one side and metric on the other. Probably still better tolerances than an average adjustable wrench.

OK some DOE's (and SOE's..) from the big Plvmb buy of two weeks ago"

Smooth and Pebble finish in this pic:

And all smooth in this one. Two of these in the bottom left are marked "A Plvmb" and the size only. so I suspect these are early in the Company's life...

A photograph of a photograph of a bunch of DOE wrenches may seem like a strange contribution to this thread, but bear with me, I think you guys will appreciate it.

These framed black and white photographs – wrenches, some sort of large engine (possibly for a street car station), and an airplane with proplellers – are hanging on the wall in the common room in a hospice outside of Philadelphia. More specifically, in a ward for elderly people suffering from dementia, senility, and Alzheimer’s. I thought that was a nice, unusual, and thoughtful touch. Respectful, artistic images of vintage objects that had a significant cultural meaning in their lifetimes.

LUG: I agree those pictures are cool.

Outlaw: nice HAUL on those plvmb wrenches. you might want to post them on the show your plvmb thread if you have time to. there is also a 1 inch Plvmb or maybe a proto ratchet in the Sacramento CL that might not be far from you if you don't already own one.

not really a collection, more of a grab bag of DOEs. Most came in a few at a time with toolboxes, etc. Let me know if you need any to complete a set. Pic 1 is all of them, pics 2 and 3 are closeups.

I have a set from when they were made by New Britain. They have the same grooved shank but do not have the hexite stamp.

When I worked there in the early 1970s the groove had disappeared.

I was told that the grooves were removed when they changed from 8620 steel to 1137 steel as a cost reduction. This enabled them to know which alloy was which in case of durability issues.

Also the forging dies without the grooves were less expensive to maintain.

MShaw is correct. If it says "Hexite" or Blackhawk - Armstrong, that is pure Blackhawk period. No Hexite generally means NB produced.

I found a set of four (4) 50's era PENENS DOE's, 15/16 x 1 to 9/16 x 1/2, at the early bird flea on Friday. On Saturday the same guy (house clear-out type) emptied the whole trailer and the 7/16 x 3/8 was there. Concave panel on shank, font, and date codes very reminiscent of JP Danielson 'CONTROLLED STEEL' DOE's of that era

SamsAP, what do you know about that Shaw wrench?

I found one of that same style in Mexico. I was unable to get much info at all at the time.

No idea, picked it up in a box full of tools I bought. Kept it because I had never heard of Shaw before, it is USA made IIRC

I picked up a Shaw wrench a couple of years ago, and gave it to an old friend with the same name.
