Hello boys and girls of Garage Journal,

A close friend of mine works on high tech and very expensive military gear (e.g. sonar systems on carriers, communications systems on Blackhawk helicopters, etc.). Consequently, his tools and toolbox must assume extreme organization and cleanliness. All of his drawers must be shadowed (think foam cut drawer organizers), and all of his tools must be engraved with his initials and the last 4 digits of his social security number. On certain projects he even has to clean his tools with ethanol, removing all oil and dirt due to the sensitive nature of the gear. He is free to buy/have/use any brand or quantity of tools he wants, but a complete inventory of his entire tool set is kept by his employer (government contractor) and he is obligated to update it whenever he gets new tools or discards or takes home old tools.

Here is an idea of what every one of his drawers must look like:

Stanley%20&%20Knipex%20Shadow%20Foam%20Drawer.jpg

The underlying idea behind this extreme regulation is unequivocal accountability in the event of a catastrophe. He has told me stories of former coworkers who lost their jobs because a socket or small tool was found in a piece of gear that could have led to serious damage. In other cases, guys have been fired because they misplaced a tool that ended up on the flight deck of a carrier and thus could have been sucked into a fighter jet's engine or something along those lines.

Do any of you work under similar regulation or simply choose to keep your tools and box this obsessively clean and organized? If so, please share pictures and tell us what you do. Thanks!

There is something to be said about tool sets with blow molded cases, when working on things or in areas where you really don't want to misplace or forget a tool.

I can't tell you how many times I've wrapped up a job, checked my 1/4" socket set, and realized I was still missing a socket. Very helpful indeed.

I've been thinking about doing a foam cutout piece for my pliers, since they're the next most likely tools to be misplaced in my travels and projects.

I have a Marine buddy who worked on Harriers and had to do the same exact thing.

I will be doing a similar thing (minus all the engraving) when I move into my new garage.

All of this organizational work started with SMED - Single Minute Exchange of Die.

Very nice stuff, although I'm sure there are some tools in a few of these boxes that could go away and not be missed. That would be the next step in toolbox organization ... you only want the tools on hand that you need.

But, thats to rigid ... more tools the better I say

Nice.:thumbup::thumbup: People that are smart enough to respect their hard earned investment... tools, and choose the right tool for the job, can keep them like this.
I have tools,30- 35 years old, that look damn near new(in my personal box). NO. Stuff I use often and wipe down, lube as needed.Don't leave in the yard. I don't open paint cans with fine screwdrivers etc.

When 50% + of everything you own is a tool of some sort......makes ya think.
I hope when I'm gone someone treats my stuff with the same respect.
I think I'll pressure wash my mower this morning and give it some wax.

Great thread. I have been kicking around the idea of shadowing several of my drawers. At my old shop (auto tech), I was teased for having a tidy box, but the main reason I did it that way was so I don't lose any tools. Keeping them clean helps me do a tidier job, and not beating on tools helps to ensure that they stay within tolerances for years to come. In my opinion, the best organizational scheme is one that is easily accessible, sorted by use, space efficient, and easy to identify.

Wow! My tools might look this nice after I retire and have tons of time on my hands :lol_hitti

I had a neatly shadowed little carry around box 25 years ago that was my home box, but once I started wrenching for pay, that stuff fell by the wayside.

That's what I was thinking. Where do these guys get that kind of time? I'd love to be able to that with my tools but I really wouldn't have the time.

^^^^exactly this^^^^

i used to have this organization and time when i was an aircraft tech from '04-'10.

but Once you start working 10+ hours a day, using your tools all day long, bouncing from one job to the next. the last thing you want to do is polish tools.

i still have good organization and have only lost 1 or 2 sockets over the last few years, but the last thing i'm going to do is put a dozen hours into foam inserts and cleaning. That is, unless my employer paid for me to do it.

(forgot to add, if i had to foam insert/shadow my box, i'd probably need 3 snap-on Mr. BIG boxes to make up for the lost space. )

The best use of this is in your shallow 2" drawers which I have lots of. It sure beats dumping tools into a drawer and digging through it. Time and lost tools is what you gain. You become more efficient. Here is the company I use for the pre made black and red.

Here I took an existing design and asked them to change it so I could add my 120xp ratchets.

Here is a snap on drawer where I had to scan and measure every tool. It's now a number in his catalogue so I can re order and change at any time.

The ones below are from fast cap. They are about $13 for a 4 by 2' sheet. So easy to work with. I love this stuff. It took maybe a half hour to cut this one myself.

I bought some new side cabinets and I decided to buy the craftsman nutdrivers to fill a drawer up. I had found myself buying more craftsman tools the past 5 years just because he had the pre made organizers.

Lastly. Two of my daughters just left home to finish school one went to Texas and the other Mizzou. The Mizzou girl is heavily into arts and crafts and was always into my tool box constructing something. She calls home one day and wanted me to get her some basic tools. I decided to get her a small kit that she could grow into. I bought the new craftsman toolbox at an outlet store for $38. It's perfect. I also bought a few new craftsman tools for her.

These craftsman pliers sets are way nicer than I expected. I may buy more for myself.

This should give her a nice start. I will add a few more tools before I take it to her.

This setup is for laparoscopic surgery, like gallbaldder removal.

The toolboxes on this thread are more neatly organized. I love GJ. :)

To the OP.... it is called ATAF. All Tools Accounted For. I was a 6469 in the USMC and a Collateral Duty Inspector. At the beginning of a maintenance action (repair), at a work stoppage and when the worker returns the toolbox key you must perform and ATAF. If you "pencil whip" and ATAF signoff, and something happens, I.E. a tool is missing or plane crashes etc, you will be looking at SERIOUS trouble.

You guys loose space with that organization. But it does look nice

I'm not sure it does. I took the 299 piece craftsman USA socket set and poured them into a 6" deep bottom drawer for storage until I got the organizers in. It pretty much filled it to the top. After that I used 3 - 2" deep drawers for organizing the set.

Same space in the cabinet was used but you have to have a cabinet with the shallow drawers. I bought 18" craftsman top chests to pull the drawers and use in the bottom cabinets. I'm always looking for more of the older 6 drawer grip latch 18" deep too chests as doners

A good friend of mine is a successful independent who's been in business some 40 years or so. He is very selective in his tidiness: where working on engine or gearbox internals, yes; otherwise, his workspace looks as if it was hit by a tornado.

It wouldn't work for me, but it works for him.

The irony is that his tools and the stacks of equipment and other junk are in immaculate condition, having been well-preserved by the built-up coating of grease he never wipes off.

I posted mine in the show your toolbox thread a couple of days ago. Mine is very organized but not in foam or anything so no wasted space. They way mine is you can tell at a glance if anything is missing.

If you need more socketry than that?
