Technically not a "press", as it doesn't have the overarm, and dwarfed by all the old iron posted so far, but it does have a lot of accessories! And yes, I do use it on occasion.

Technically a watchmakers staking set. But I guess you probably already knew that.

Picked up this Greenerd #3 the other day, thought I would add to the list.
This thing is huge! Looks like sold by the Kinsey Co. in Cincinnati Ohio, but can't find out anything more than this. Can anyone date this press? Looks just like the current model, but has the letters cast in the side, and not in a circle. Wondering what the stand would have looked like.
Thanks.
John

I have been looking locally for an arbor press for a couple of months, mostly finding current HF stuff. I have just come across a Champion #3 made in Lancaster PA by Champion Blower and Forge Company. It's missing its plate and has clearly been outside for a while but isn't especially rusty. I am a bit concerned however that the collar on the arm seems misaligned to the collar on the body. I'd appreciate anyone's opinion as well as thoughts as to what a reasonable price would be.

Thanks

There might be some serious wear either to the internal bushing or the shaft. either one can be repaired. I'd pay $200 if if I needed it.

While it could be worn, I think it"s more likely core shift, and the hole wasn't bored centered in the boss. Easy to check, and if it is that worn,I"d pass.

Thanks guys for the input.

My concern is that some of the teeth might be missing. Seems like too large a drop just for ware and yet teeth missing shouldn't necessarily equate to any drop at all. Having never had one apart, or even in my hands for that matter, I'm not really sure what to make of it.

Unfortunately it's an 'as is' auction and I won't be able to get my hands on it until the auction is over. Still, I may go for it if I can get it cheap enough. :D

Just modified my Arbor press with a new ratcheting handle. I was going to do as many before have and use a 3/4" ratchet, but first, I don't own one, second, a decent one is not cheap, third, I had this on hand.

It's a Ridgid pipe threading ratchet handle. I seldom use it and even if I do want to thread some pipe, it's still available for that use. I just milled the octagonal end onto the arbor press shaft to accept the ratchet. Now I can position the handle for maximum leverage.

Now that was good thinking!

Are those bearing seperators under the press? If so, how big?

Coach

Hey Coach sorry it took me so long to get back to you. Guess I should check this a little more often. Yes they are splitters I have 6 of them from about 2" across up to that big one on the bottom. The big one is OTC 953 its about 13" across and heavy as hell. We dont use it very often, but its nice to have when you need it.

Question...... is there any reason why one of these from HF would be a bad purchase ? I know it would be made in China, but it only has to perform a basic function. Thoughts ?

I have looked at the HF one about six times and keep trying to convince myself . . .but it is really ****. I know, it just needs to "work" but look at the tightening key (stamped and rough) on top and the finish on most of it - just a hunk of ****. I'd rather wait for something to come along on CL than spend money on the HF model and have to replace it.:headscrat

Here is my Dake 1 1/2 B. I picked it up for $12.50 on an obscure online auction site. I love those 99% off sales.

Here's pics of my Dake model 1/12 B when I got it almost a year ago. I didn't do as good as King crew at $12.50 but the $100 I gave wasn't bad!

I Have a Dake #0 (1.5 Ton) and a Dake #1 (3 Ton). I plan on drilling a hole into the face of the 1.5 Ton press to fit some metal or leather letter stamps. I picked these up off Craigslist over the past couple of years.

This is a good thread and I didn't want it to die. :D

I picked up a Chinese arbor press today at the scrap yard for $10. It's not in great shape but the price was right.

Here's my addition. Just inherited these from my grandfathers shop. One is a 1/2 ton. The other is a 3 ton.

I bought this monster last week. I paid a mere $60.00 for it. It's big and it's heavy. It's a Greenard 3 ton, I can't wait to start using it.

Its funny I came across this thread last night and I just finished my arbor press. It came from a friend of mine who is a retired Tool and Die maker. It was missing the plate and he made one for me. I picked it up today and now all I have to do is find a place in the shop for it. I sand blasted it then painted it. Its really neat to have something this old in my shop with all of the modern tools, I think it will be a great addition, Ed.

That is awesome, BMWRider. I have the same Chinese arbor press and have been watching for a ratcheting press to come up for sale. I think I'll watch for a Ridgid ratcheting die holder instead!

P.S. I have put well over 200,000 miles on BMW motorcycles so far, although I am currently "between beemers".

Just a little one for jobs that the hydraulic press would be to large and cumbersome for. It switched places with the small shear and is bolted to the table.

After seeing BMW Rider's Ridgid ratchet modification, I got to thinking.
So, I made a ratchet modification to mine:

Details are in post #6644 over in the "What did you do in your garage today?" thread in the General Garage section.

I have upgraded from my little press to a Dake model #4. It took a crane to get it on and off the truck. It's 1300 Lbs!

Picked this up from Craigslist, it is an Atlas Mandrel Press No. 0 I can not tell the actual date of it, but since Dake bought out the Atlas Press division in 1944, it would be before that.

It had some rust so I repainted it, and the previous owner welded a plate to the ram, which I removed. I also ground/milled the bottom two teeth on the ram so it can ratchet the position of the handle as many other have.

I am also waiting for 7 Rivers to offer a 5" plate on eBay for it.

Actually, this is my second arbor press, the first one was included with my Unimat DB-200

Looks nice. Great paint job. I'm not sure I've ever used mine like that one but I do like just looking at it. Which is what I do with most of my tools instead of use them. :dunno:

OTR!! (old thread resurrection)

Came to see what others had and had done to their arbor presses....

Found this the other day at a buddies yard (Scrap)
He let me have it for $20!!

Famco #3 dirty but functioning, no handle, no bolster plate.

Ordered a 7 rivers plate, drilled and tapped a stud so it would pivot. ($21 ebay))
Cleaned it up and painted it..
Welded an old 1" drive socket to the handle ($12 ebay)
Bought a cheapo Tekton 1" ratchet ($45 ebay)
Can of paint I had already (Machine Grey)

Viola, a pretty nice 3 ton Arbor press for less than $100 ;)

Nice job! When you build a stand for it make sure the front slot hangs over so you can do longer items.

Ok. Never paid much attention to arbor presses. What's the No. system that they use for sizing. I know they have ton ratings, but looking at these they don't seem to correspond with the model No. ?

This isn't mine, it's a craigslist ad. The guy says it has a 12 on it so it must be 12 ton. He's asking $500.

What's it really capable of and roughly what's it worth?

Thanks!

It's actually only rated to 3.5 tons and missing the handle. Tough to say value without checking the threads and health of the arbor. If there's any cracks or welds?

I say $150, I would like to pay a lot less but also depends on your area which can greatly effect price.

Actually, it's a 5 ton. Needs a handle and a stand, has the arbor plate at least, I'm guessing it's worth between $150-$250, depending on availability wherever you are. http://www.greenerd.com/arborpress-detail.aspx?pressid=7
Use the missing stand and handle, and the way lower than he thinks tonnage as negotiating points.

30.00 dollar pick up this weekend. Missing the handle but has 3 3/4 nuts welded on it instead. The plate is a 4" but probably making a 7" thanks to BLUEBOLT informing me about the original size and the different styles of plates he's built or plans to build. I ordered a new handle for 37.00 from Dake today .
