Re: Show us your cool, "old" drill press

I scored a Cameron 164 Micro DP today. 5" capacity. I don't think it's very old at all & I don't see a serial number. Cameron's website says they were first built in 1964.

Sorry about the pics, TAPATALK did that for me, but fixed now.

I picked this thing out of the garbage, literally. Paid ZERO. The motor is held to the bracket with one 10-32 screw through the thin motor case and was stripped. I spent 20 minutes installing a helicoil for the repair. One oil cup is missing, so I'll have to hunt one of those down. The aluminum pulleys have no wear at all on them.

I don't really have a use for it, but it should clean up nice and look cool sitting on my bench. :bounce:

How did you come across that gem? I've just moved to London and I look through eBay, Craigslist, and anywhere else that Google tells me but I can never find any nice second hand tools/machinery like that.

To be honest, someone linked to the eBay auction on another forum I frequent (Mig Welding). Stroke of luck really because the seller had two of us to choose from. The ad wasn't up for long...

Thanks for the link, it was more about trying to identify where I should be looking for things like that :)

They seem to be a great piece of steel those meddings.

Well if it says "Meddings" or "Myford" or "Starretts" etc. in the title of the auction, you're unlikely to find a bargain. I find most of my stuff by visual searches and tangential search phrases!

Good luck

Hi new to the board thought you may like to see a few photos of my prentice bro drill press. When I got it home it was a mess cleaned and painted also the pic of how I repaired the well abused table.

I really like your fix to the table top. That is classy and effective.

This is a test. What is it?

I was going to wait and show the second pic. But the first one says right on it what model it is,,,lol. So I posted the second one too.

Actually. I'm just trying to learn how to use this dang camera.

The black is a temporary paint job. I put it in the heated parts washer and forgot about it all day. Came back and it was bald and starting to rust. So I just painted it with what ever I had on hand to keep it from rusting until I'm ready to paint it.

I kinda like the black,,,lol.

Just got this old Atlas/Craftsman 101.24820 drill press with some nice extras. A scarce table lift and the slow speed extra pulley setup.
My question is about the Palmgren rotary cross slide. Any chance it came with the drill press originally?
It bolts right on without any extra holes, and has obviously been on there a long time - maybe since the press was new.
I did some Google searches, but couldn't find that exact model or much other info. Did notice some other similar drill presses in this thread.
What do you guys think?

crguy, idk what you paid but that is an awesome score! I think that's the first floor model of that DP that I've seen and certainly the first one with a slow speed pulley and table lift. The x/y rotary table would not have "came" with the drill press but Palmgren made them for Craftsman and the original owner may have purchased them at the same time, from the same place. That's a great score in itself and to be found with the drill press is just awesome, congrats!

Does the rotor table say Palmgern? or just the vise up top?

What a great all in one score. You **** just for getting it in one stop all bolted together! (Since you are new, getting awarded suckage is a GOOD thing! We usually only award it to a really great deal, but once in a while you can get it for an outstanding find, and this qualifies I think! )

The DP is from the late 30's to mid 40's or so.

The rotary cross slide has Palmgren cast in, and the sticker is still partially there. I just left the tilt vise there to show how the drill press was being used. It's marked Made in USA - looks kinda like a Palmgren also.

Most everything in my shop is old US quality iron. Already had drill presses, but couldn't pass this one up.

I don't blame you! I would have too!

I'm curious; what diameter is the main column?

The column is 2 3/4". Same as the Delta 220 I think?
First one of these lifts I saw was recently on Ebay. A couple of days later this drill press popped up on CL, and I was on it.

Went to go get an old craftsman lathe, and came home with my second Dunlap dp. Couldn't pass it up for the price. Atlas made right? Serial number starts with 101. Everything operates smoothly, after a generous application of penetrating oil!

That is quite the find, great job! Most of us have to hunt and hunt for all the cool add-ons. But boy a table lift, slow speed pulley, and cross-slide table sure do make a drill press a pleasure to use!

The copper chuck key holder bolted to the lift gear housing is a nice touch too. Looks it came from an owner with very "particular" ideas about his drill press :bounce:

Be sure to post up as you dig into it. There's a lot of knowledge on this board about these presses and those particular accessories (looking at you, FrankLee!)

Thanks for all the nice comments, guys. I'm just going to clean it up and put it to use. Haven't found much signs of use - nothing that would warrant a tear down at this time. I have carefully lubed everything.

FrankLee: Thanks for the tip on the table lift bearing. Will look into that.

so if I take that aluminum "condom" off, there's a possibility I'll have a litter of little Yankee push drills running around the shop?!

Yes, see the baby drill press above?

Picked this up yesterday. Haven't found any like it on the internet so far. Saw a drawing of a very similar model by Delta - said "Delta's earliest drill press". The only real markings are Atlas on the cover and what looks like BD1 on the idler pulley bracket. The motor is a Sunlight Electl Mfg Co. 1/3 hp. Has anyone seen one like this or know anything about it?
