Anyone have a handle for one of these Atlas XY vises they would sell? I ordered this one and they did not take off the handles - one broken in shipping.

Has anyone used one of the old Craftsman/Palmgren rotary vises on there drill press? Are they any good or too much play?

Thanks!

I think rileysan has one on his 150 drill press and possibly a few other members as well!

What would you be using a rotary vise on a drill press for?

The Palmgren vise is more than accurate enough for drill press work.

I don't even use a cross slide vise on the drill press. See no need for it.

I actually use the XY vise all the time, was thinking the rotary would give a little more adjusting options. Yesterday I was making some custom size washers. I needed them for this puller (originals were missing) and in order to get small enough outside diameter washers to accept 3/4" bolts, I drilled out the bolt hole size in 12 old vintage washers I had. The x y movement in the drill press vise allowed me to quickly line them up as I changed drill sizes and kept drilling a larger hole. Sure this is not the most industrial way to do this, but it quickly allowed me to get the result I wanted. Even if they still made washers this size that I could buy in my part of the world (they apparently do not), - I try not to buy anything that has "made in China" written on it.

I used to use an xy vise often, it is very handy to line up a hole perfectly without having to move the table or head. The problem is that removing the vise is a pain when the work will not fit. The solution of course is to have two drills.

Really? I just move the piece to be drilled until it lines up with the drill, then start drilling. No moving of the head or table. Drilling holes on a drill press is not high precision work.

Well, it certainly can be precision if you use the right tools.

Please enlighten us, if you are drilling a "precision" hole, what do you use? I do realize one man's precision is another man's 1/100 thousands off...

With careful layout and accurate center punching, a person can get very precise hole positioning. Beyond that, I use a mill and start the hole with a center drill.

You get spoiled if you have machines with digital readouts!

I have been there, marked 4 holes , drilled on press press. Screws would not quite line up on one hole so had to make it slightly larger. I like the idea of a machinists vise, but hard to find anything with a large enough clamping area that is not a $$$ monster. I did clean up the piece of one I have, hoping one of you guys can send a picture and let me know what I am missing. Vise is marked WD USA 470...the jaw on the LEFT of the photos moves on the slider piece, the right side jaw is stationary. I "think" I need the lever that actuated this on the pin in the upper right hand corner of photos?

picked up this turret drill press thinking I can use my tapping head in it, but doesnt look like it will be easy modification.

Anyone familiar if the drill press came like this, or it was retrofitted with the turret later on?

Just finished my refurbishment of this 1942 Craftsman 103.0305 Mohawk DP. It was a local CraigsList pickup for $50, including a heavy wooden cabinet and a cheap import vise. I've made a couple posts on FrankLee's excellent Craftsman thread. All I have left is to rewire the motor, which will get done after I take delivery of a modern paddle safety switch. Really happy with how it came out. I'm usually messing around with old bench vises, but I think I'll be expanding my focus into old machine tools.

Pretty sure the turret was aftermarket, but those just do not come up around here very often so I have not had one to take apart.

i was able to track down a belt guard for mine so i figured i would update the photo, it really makes the whole piece having the belt guard on these old walker turners. still searching for a base to replace mine that has been broke and welded but its usable for now. great drill press

Re: Show us your cool, "old" drill press

Just finished my Buffalo Forge Co. No. 15 bench top project. I received the new capacitor from Cornell-Dubilier and after a couple of minutes it died in a glorious fashion. It went out with a bang and made an olfactory impression in my house garage that is still there.

Well, being the safety-concious man I am, I decided I can just go ahead and give the motor pulley a little spin to get it started (I don't endorse that method). I'll only be turning it on if I ABSOLUTELY need to before the new capacitor arrives.

Until then, here are some pictures for you.

Also, I did correctly orient the motor pulley. I was curious what would happen if I put it on upside-down. I'll link a video of it running soon. **Edit- http://imgur.com/gallery/55pkPVE ** IMG_20201020_141615_570.jpegIMG_20201020_140927_320.jpgIMG_20201020_140927_335.jpg20201020_114448.jpgIMG_20201020_140927_274.jpg20201020_114444.jpg20201020_114326.jpg20201020_114250.jpeg

Nice restoration. That's a great drill press.

The motor is correctly oriented IF you have a center pulley installed. Otherwise you want it opposite the spindle pulley so you can actually vary the gear ratios.

Correct, and that drill press needs a center pulley to get the speed down slower.

As I am slowly cleaning and stripping paint on the Canedy-Otto camelback model #36, first problem. The quill stop is broken and apparently has been for a LONG time (two different repaint colors were in the break etc.).

Does anyone have one of these they would please sell me?

Why don't you just weld that one back together?

It will probably come to that, but I was afraid it might be under a lot of stress with both clamping around the round quill and the arm that stops the automatic feed. Would like to buy one that is unbroken.

Greetings!
I recently hauled home a mystery DP with an interesting story and a price tag I couldn't refuse.

No marking or nameplate to be found except that I know it has a 1hp Craftsman motor Model 115.7295 CM280K7

The rest of the machine appears to be somewhat of a Frankenstein-ed shop project, as suggested by the seller's story and a hand made plaque stating that it was built up as part of a 1958 Tech School project.

Whatever it is it's solid as a rock, no run-out, old school machine that I'm so far really happy with.

If anyone can identify any of the pieces I'm interested to know.

Walker-Turner Company, The Driver Line. I don't know much about it other than it is beautiful piece of machinery and it works flawlessly. This belongs to a good friend who bought it at an estate sale. He currently uses it in his woodworking shop.

Any help in determining the model number and year of manufacture is appreciated.

I believe that Walker-Turner added "serial numbers" (actually model numbers such as 500 or 700 or such) in 1939. I have a 900 from 1940.

But looking in the 1933 catalog, I didn't see anything that looked like that one, so I would date it between those years. This should help
http://vintagemachinery.org/mfgIndex/detail.aspx?id=808

The next time I'm in his shop I'll look it over closer for any additional numbers.
Thanks for the link and the help!

A fellow on PM that goes by "cbxlan" is selling an extra that he 3D printed in Bronze for a Canedy-otto #36. Go to the antique machinery forum. I just happened to see his and your threads this evening. good Luck!

In bronze? He must have a very fancy printer. I run a metal 3d printer at work and that thing costs as much as a house. Well more than the one I live in.

Just picked this up today with a bunch of other great items. Any thoughts on a maker? Motor has no discernable markings other than number on the mount, would love to know more.

Table is interesting, has two drawers and is counterbalanced with 4 window weights. As with the other items from this lot, the previous owner heavily modified.https://scontent-lga3-2.**.fbcdn.net/v/t1.0-9/131896116_10221565634862846_301866917678065370_n.jpg?_nc_cat=105&ccb=2&_nc_sid=b9115d&_nc_ohc=DO34dONvtB0AX9DrZpc&_nc_ht=scontent-lga3-2.**&oh=7a3e946c186834519f5c8eb6700b5173&oe=6001471E

No idea what make it is, but sure is interesting...

My machine trades teacher said when he and I were at an auction when I was student teaching with him....where I picked up my South Bend Lathe drill press that had a few minor drill nicks in the table...as he pointed to them.... “Looks like some students used this a couple of times...”. Your table on that dp made me think of that great memory....[emoji16]
