GJ user @mattblast has recreated these (out of production) Kennedy decals for me. As usual, they’ve turned out perfect. IF anyone confirms that the style no. sticker on the 297XB (29″ 7-Drawer Roller Cabinet) should have been issued with a serial number (rather than a date), please do update me.

Now with a 520 top box from the same period (approx 2004), my Kennedy set of 4 is complete (even protected by new drawer liners and top mat).

Tom

I have a 295 that is from mid 1970's and it is 295-six digit s/n. I have two 297's ...one has 297B-six digit s/n and the other is 297XB with mfg date.

Note: my 297XB is similar date to yours however my label doesn't say "Style No." and the silver zone for style & date is now full width.

AFTER: And now here are a few “after“ photos of this vintage 7-drawer 520 Kennedy. Other than cleaning, the only thing that is not original are the new brown felt drawer liners from Kennedy (and an extra key). Even though I was about to cover the drawer interiors with new felt, I did prep all them with Rustoleum primer and then the Rustolemum Camo “Flat Earth Brown” (that I had seen recommended as a close color match — it’s not.)

It will keep its original patina and is ready to go back into service.

I have a similar vintage Kennedy box with square corners, leather handle, signed "Kennedy" under the lid, and no label.Kennedy 520_lid with sharp corners_my pic2b.jpgKennedy 520_lid with sharp corners_my pic1b.jpg

My shop is always changing, mostly for the better. ...but now and then I regret selling something, like this 297B (pic 1). It occurred to me after selling it I could really use a mobile tool cart and a 297 would have worked perfectly. Now I am searching Craigslist for another 297 or the holy grail 348X (pic 2). By the way, I have never seen a 348X in the wild which makes me want one even more!1.JPGKennedy 348X from catalog.JPG

Another "sharp corner" Kennedy 620 that I moved to front and center of my garage (rearranging things). This one I like for how nicely done the J.W. Huff. is on the lid and the intricate bins in the top drawer. Normally I try to remove painted names but this one is a keeper. As I sit here sipping my scotch I tip my glass to J.W. Huff. for job well done! Actually, that may be a company name or an actual person or perhaps both.

One of my problems I’ve always had with Kennedy top chests was the storage of the front panel. My solution to this problem may be of interest in this thread.

If you put the panel in the designated slot, it effectively makes any lower drawers inaccessible. So that’s a no-fly zone. If you put it anywhere else, it can get lost, damaged or otherwise inaccessible.

So I made a little bracket to hold mine. All it is is a magnetic indicator mount with a small piece of bent aluminum.

IMG_3648.jpeg

Turns out if you put the top chest front flush with the front of the drawer section it leaves about a 1 inch gap. This is a perfect amount to catch the lip on the edge of the cabinet front panel. It would stay on its own, but the magnet just is a small insurance policy.

Simple, but it only took me over a decade to figure out a solution I was happy with.

Pull your bottom drawer out and see what’s keeping your cover from going all the way in. It sould go in much further then that..

No lol. The toolbox is 8.5 deep and the cover is 12.5” tall.

This is one of the Journeyman series boxes not one of the tiny apprentice sized ones. It’s got a lot more drawers.

I have a few Kennedy's to show and a question to ask at the end:

Right now this area is in transition, I'm moving everything around. These two will sit side-by-side like this and form the base of the outfeed table of my Unisaw, I'll use a single sheet of 3/4" melamine for the top. These hold basic tools.

This roller hold machinist tools, mostly tidbits for the lathe.

These two rollers are going back on casters. I took the csters off a few years ago. Left one contains measuring tools, right one has specialty tools for automotive and small engine work. Right one had surface rust when i got it, cleaned it up and gave it a coat of primer, but never touched up the finish paint.

This five drawer topper holds some of my drills, countersinks, etc. A photo of one of the drawers is my avatar.

This five drawer topper contains a mish-mash of utility tools.
20260214_170412_resized.jpg

This five drawer contains hand tools; top drawer screw drivers, second drawer wrenches, third drawer pliers, etc.

This five drawer topper is on a dolly for now. It belongs on the roller in the second photo. It also holds things for the lathe.

Here's my question...
These two 5-drawer work tables with red drawers and with one side open. Anyone recognize them? No maker's marks or decals on them. Drawer slides are the same as the ones on the brown Kennedy boxes. They came from auction at a fairly large machine shop.
One stack holds taps, dies, files, punches. The other (behind the Lassy tapper and the pedestal vise) holds angle grinders and corded drills.

Well, my apologies. Didn't think to do this before I posted, but I did an image search and the red drawered worktables came back as a Craftsman.

That was gonna be my guess. Look like a bottom box I have, slides are a dead match to Kennedy.

My 1969 520… my Grandfather bought it for my Father. Fifty year Tool & Die maker, I’ve had it the last 15 years. Still @ the same company & still full of Dads tools.
