has anyone had any luck using socket trays in their portable toolbox? i was planning on picking up a kobalt tray set off of ebay but i was unsure of how well the pegs on them would hold up with being moved around a lot, the other option i was gonna do was ernst socket rail but it would cost a fair bit more to get for my 3/8 set.

I wouldn't bet on them working well. My Kobalt trays are great in my shop box, but still get knocked over if I toss something in the wrong part of the drawer and it catches any deep sockets (usually at the end of the work week, throwing everything loose in the top socket drawer).

I recently got an Ernst locking socket rail with a ratchet/extension holder for my field bag, and it works awesome. They have a setup for locking multiple rails together, working like a tray (but the sockets lock into place).

i also found out a little bit ago that harbor freight makes their own plastic socket rails and it would only cost about $20-25 to get a full set of 1/4,3/8, and 1/2 so im also thinking of going with those also. the cheapest i could find for a set of 4 3/8 rails is around $44, so its a hell of a lot more cheaper

Standard plastic rails like HF, Husky or Gearwrench will do you just fine (love my Gearwrench rails). I just suggested the Ernst since they have the "twist lock" feature that kicks ***. I've had no issues with sockets on plastic rails coming loose in a portable box, but can be a pain in the *** working out of a tool bag.

Here's a fellow GJ member reviewing the Ernst rails being sold under the Tekton name.

Check out Summit Racing and ML Tools for great prices on the Ernst rails, better than Amazon or anyone else out there.

My main portable tool box is a drop-front Plomb that's in really nice shape.

I really really wish that someone made that same box new (with the same build quality), I'd probably buy several of them. It's a great form factor.

My most used portable box. Late '80s Crafty. This is the junkyard box. Sucker is getting heavy! I had to add the "shoulder strap".

My portable box, currently use it at home for messing with my junk. The tools inside are my junkyard kit, but I have 2 craftsmen bags that I throw the tools in when I go to the yard.

Bluepoint box, mixture of Craftsman, SK, and random import tools.

It's a rebranded montezuma box that menards sells under their house brand (masterforce) I got a dented one for $199.99 but regular price is $299.99. If you look up the montezuma boxes you'll see they come in many different sizes. This is the 26" wide one.

I have tried the all metal boxes, but every bump creates a heck of a racket. So about 7 years ago I got this bag for Christmas and have not looked back. It goes everywhere. Many junk yard trips to hunt german car parts. My only complaint is the weight. A lot of the time it weighs more then the part I went to get.
Tools are Craftsman wrenches and mostly HF sockets. The best weight / space saving thing i have found yet are the telescoping ratchets from HF. The 1/2" drive one has totally eliminated the need for a separate external breaker bar for me.

The best thing about all the individual pockets is you can quickly see if anything is missing.

Blockw@rt, nice setup! You've got a lot packed into your Stanley box,

Couple of questions .... 1) In the 3rd photo down, there is a "X" shaped, or cross-type, tool in the center of the tray. What is it? 2) Is the brand of the black-handled screwdrivers on the right side of your screwdriver drawer "Zebra"? How do you like them and does the shaft go fully through the handle with a metal cap on the handle end for hitting?

This has been my pick up and go tool box for around two decades. I know it is way overkill but whenever I try to downsize I end up not having the tool I need when I'm working away from home. I have tried to downsize a few times but after less than a month or so I go back to this tried and tested set up. I have done everything from fuel pumps to head gaskets with little more than is in this box. It contains Cman, SO, Matco, ChannelLock, Vicegrip, and some others I can't think of now.

I had that at one time, if I wad to box it would have a couple but have a tray on the seat *** one of my better mods. This I use a lot and has been tailored. Even in my pickup, don't carry absolutely everything.

I will just grab one of my toolbags and fill it with what I'll need of its a small job. 4745541cdf646693a83e102219f01bd4.jpg
I only have this cart at work so if I am doing a bigger job I'll use the fork lift and put it in my pickup.

Here is my portable tool setup, it contains pretty much everything I need for fixing robots, among other things. I really like the tote style tool bags, and this one has been working out well for me, I like that I don't have to dig through a bunch of pockets to get what I need.

I like the Würth Zebra's with the impact cap very well, the haptic and quality is absolutely comparable to the Felo 550's.

But it's also no wonder, Felo is the original manufacturer and part of the Würth Group.;)

Well I took some of the portability away by mounting it to my Truck toolbox but I made it so it's only 2 wing nuts to remove it. It's a craftsman 4 drawer rally box. I made it so that when the rally box is locked the box can't be lifted out of my toolbox.
So here it is. I'm happy with the outcome.

mjoekingz28,

Honestly I haven't used anything on them. They are brand new for the most part . That's why they look so clean and shiny. I don't think they will stay like that for long.
