I heard of a husband who was looking at his wife's sharp pinking shears. He sneezed and dropped the pinking shears on his lap. He came up short with a frilly dilly.

I had always meant to post in that one - if only for the cool name - I once worked with a guy (later he worked for me) who literally as child, ran with scissors, fell, and lost an eye - he had a glass replacement.

But Mine are almost all vintage (not counting the "kitchen Scissors" those are mostly Fiskars and mostly its "where were they left this time"?

Some of mine, -not nearly all!:

Probably my oldest are the bottom two pair:

1 moms dads mine.jpg

Bottom were my Mom's sewing buttonhole scissors, she has had them as long as I can remember, and they were old then. I got them when she move into assisted living last April, (She's not sewing any more...) EDIT_ I googled them and they are buttonhole scissors and the odd rectangular opening by the rings has a threaded hole on one side and a stop screw goes there -So you start the buttonhole cut in the "open" position, and set the stop screw for the exact length of cut for the specific button hole. There is a diagonal threaded hole (you can just see it in the pics below) in Mom's set maybe a 4-48? (a 4-40 gets stuck in about 1 turn...)

1 Moms a.jpg

Made in Germany, I'm sure before WWII interesting rectangle there, like it was meant to grip something...

1 Moms b.jpg

second from the bottom, Dad's tool box Scissors, I've had these since they divorced when I was 15, Also had them as long as I can remember, and they were also old then:

1 Dads.jpg

And the top set are my Clause scissors; I got these almost 50 years ago, not new, but not really old, and used then at my work desk since, a lot of use was when I was doing a lot of engineering drawing.

1 Mine.jpg

Some from one of my wood machinist boxes I use for Coleman fettling mostly -

8 Cbox 1.jpg

Lower pair are unmarked and may be for doctors use (nice SS). The uppers have markings on both sides, and are marked Buerger Bros Co, Denver & El Paso, and Made in Germany:

Here are some names we'd like to see...
Great launch, 4.c. I am still preparing to post. :)
There is a thread, over there, that has some old and new in it. I’ll repost my vintage ones here eventually.
Oops. I see that @4xdog has the same German scissors I am about to post, and that @LesserSon posted a Compton Reliance U-Set that is different than examples that I (5") and @Mintgrun (7-1/2") posted in my Lugzsonian thread. Oh well. I hardly ever venture up there and it's okay, we can focus on 'vintage only' down here.
if only for the cool name
Also the title of a famous/infamous memoir by Augusten Burroughs.
I’ll cut to the chase....
Snerk.

I don't know what these are called and I can't find them in any of the available WISS catalogs on IA/ITCL. They have a curved blade reminiscent of manicure or pedicure, but they also resemble what WISS called light wire or filament shears.

As I mentioned upthread, I noticed that @4xdog has these same German scissors. With the fancy scroll-gilt shanks, they're called "Ladies Scissors" in many American catalogs.

I'm not going to spam the thread with examples of what we now know more commonly as snips, because they're not really within the spirit of the topic, but these are technically just heavy duty shears for tinners, they were called that in antique and vintage catalogs, and in official federal standard stock catalog nomenclature all the way up through WWII. The small duckbills (combination cut) are GMTK spec and the longer straights cuts were in many kits, including radiator and sheet metal mechanics, the source of my interest in collecting Crescent and Wiss in matching pairs. I do have a nice Long C Craftsman as well.

Those are buttonhole scissors. My mom has some too. There is a threaded hole leading into that rectangle for a screw that acts as a stop, to set the length of the hole. Turn the screw in for smaller buttonholes and out for larger ones.

Google images shows several different styles, with a variety of stop screw designs.
This is they style my mom has

This is going to be a fun thread.

:headscrat

You got me. I was not aware there was a distinction between "snips" and "shears" - in articles I read about makers I come away with the impression that the terms are used interchangeably.

There are "tin snips" (like your example just above)

And there are "shears" like these made by The Detroit Shear Company:

Detroit Shear Co Searight Shears (patent 936574)(Ebay 393110576928 02).jpg
Detroit Shear Co Searight Shears (patent 936574)(photo ebay 224277795966)

The Metal Worker, Plumber, and Steam Fitter, Volume 81 1914-
IN 1909 J. R. Searight, of Detroit, Mich., conceived the application of a compound lever to the cutting blade of metal snips as now produced by the Bartlett Manufacturing Co. on snips in sizes ranging from 7 to 14 in. in length.
The success realized from the first few snips manufactured led to the organization of the Detroit Shear Co., which put in a complete line of machinery for the manufacture of the sizes of snips above referred to from crucible steel drop forgings, therefore getting a high grade tool steel cutting shear of solid high-grade steel throughout, making it possible to temper for metal cutting which makes it more reliable than would be the case had the shears been produced with the ordinary inlaid blade of cutting steel welded to low carbon machinery steel as found in the ordinary snip.
The manufacture of these snips was taken over by the Bartlett Manufacturing Co. on January 1, 1913, since which time it has materially increased the output of snips and are fast adding new special machinery for their production. -Tested on .040 x .500 inch thick brass strip, snipped through in one stroke, no problem.

Your Buerger Bros are Barber's scissors, and they were a distributor of barber equipment. Bit of info here. Gone in 1980, 92 years of business prior to that.

Got to dig a little deeper into ITCL: Wiss Light Metal Snips J-7 (Think I have the same pair somewhere) Available w Curved or Straight blades, mine are straight I think

Your fishy is probably this one, with a very early entry into the market, Feb 18, 1890, but late relative to this book. There were German based Claubergs as well, so maybe a family member

With this book published in 1893, it may be a great reference of trademarks for this thread. First time I've come across it. Gotta bookmark it for later.

And cool, there is a full version available at Archive dot org

I have seen some overlap, even in manuals, where they may make a parenthetical qualification (e.g., "SHEARS, tinners' (hand snips), combination, type C, length of cut,..."), but my impression from most catalogs (I know it's true of PEXTO, Wiss, and Crescent at any rate) is that mfgrs distinguished them. Doesn't matter, though. I was just making an apologia for veering off. It's your thread. If you had always thought that metal cutting snips would be included, just forget I said that.

Mint, Thanks for the heads up, - I think we "cross posted"- me with my edit, with your post on the buttonhole scissors. I found that out while searching for any info on my mom's pair. I found the use, but nothing on this pair at all not even a pair on Eprey...

RTM, you found more than I did on the Buerger Bros barber scissors. I have 5-6 more barbers at least, in different branding,

FYI gents, in my experience the "Gun Metal" marker is a good indicator of really good steel in thee.

More to come, and I haven't even pulled out the big Wiss upholstery shear collection...

4Cycle, are tin snips in or out? I probability won't be posting a lot of those, as that is an all day sucker to photo those... (Just under 100 according to the inventory, and I'm sure I missed a few... :wtf: ) Maybe some of the more interesting pair.s

Here is a pair that have been sitting around the house for a while. May not be that old with the Phillips screw. At least they traveled across the Atlantic.
