I would say that looks good for first try, turn the current up a pinch. It looks like you have the concept.
These 2 are highly magnified and were not meant to be poster types but for technique, the first you can see is the same type of joint you were working on, turned up hot and with so much fill and penetration it almost melted thru the plate but could keep it together and stack it in the joint. Both on 1/4 plate, the second simple no bevel open ****, just stack it up the gap, fill between the plates.
