I have taken down the grinder and found that it is in pretty good shape. It runs fine without a lot of vibration or noises. When I was cleaning it up, I found that the grinder was originally painted in a wrinkle finish dark blue.

I was wondering what the consensus is for either leaving it as it sits, or paint it up in the original wrinkle blue. Thanks for any input.

My craftsman block grinder hoard
One 1HP 8" flat top, and the rest are all 1/2hp commercial 7". All have craftsman stands. Then there is one parts grinder on the bottom left of the shelf which I've been parting out. The 1HP will be getting a belt/disc sander attachment eventually.

New to me this week, works but could use a new power cord as this one is a little dry rotted.

Very nice.

The striped center band is rare.

The tool rests are custom, but don't be tempted to grind on the sides of the stones. Unless they are the type that are designed for that purpose.

If you haven't already, please post it in the Block grinder thread.

That Milwaukee sure looks like my Doerr. It's 1/4hp too, and weighs a ton.

Nice ! Your appears to be painted. Mine appears to be bare steel ! Not a trace of Paint.

I re-painted it a few years ago. It was an ugly industrial flat blue-green when I got it. That Milwaukee will clean up nicely. Every Milwaukee grinder I have seen has been red. No surprise there. ;)

Eh, they typically bring very little, if not even scrap. Large wheel grinders have kinda become a thing of the past.

If you are ever in doubt, chat up one of the folks at burr king, they speak as if wheel grinders are archaic. :spit:

Doc: that is some grinder. i wonder why guys list things on Craigslist without a price? do they think it's their own personal free auction site? i tend to agree with Zkling about the huge grinders especially 3 phase ones that are harder to power up. i'm looking for a BurrKing or Baldor belt grinder and maybe one day i'll have one.

That same seller has >100 ads posted on CL, and NONE have prices listed. And it's doubtful that any of it is free.....

EX: i hate those A Holes that do that. That's one of my pet peeves for Craigslist is that you can't contact customer service to report those posters. for a free site it is pretty damn good otherwise.

since you have one or several belt grinders would you ever have a need for one of these huge grinders if you did have 3 phase power?

Nope. That old wheel is a time bomb and will easily lame or kill you. When a belt breaks it has no energy and can't do much, if any, damage to you or the machine. Belts are the future.

Hi guys, see my replies in Blue.
Doc: that is some grinder.
It is, isn't it! I suppose it isn't really a bench grinder though, but it is vintage.:D

I don't use this kind of 'smilie' face very often, but this seems as good a time as any. If I could get close to them, ... :twak:

I have more questions than answers.
Does this grinder look familiar to anyone?

It's for sale. I haven't seen it in person. The owner inherited from family and has no info. He say's there are no tags any where on it.

No brand. Its a home/shop brew pedestal grinder that is using pillow block bearings to support the arbor. Pretty clean all things considered.

The pulley looks wrong to me anyway, it's pretty big and the key is taped to the side of it. :dunno:

If you need a grinder, maybe $50-80 or so.

Thanks nine. I should have mentioned the key was taped to it.

It's also a dual voltage motor.

I have a couple other smaller grinders. Nothing of any real quality.

I also found a CM block 1/2 hp 397.1949 local. I was thinking about both and setting them up differently. They both are the same price. $100. The CM has a homemade stand with guards but not water tray or light.

It would depend on how smooth it ran and the HP of the motor. Although, an open motor is not a real good idea on a grinder. If it is 1hp+ and runs smooth I'd grab it. High HP belt driven grinders are very nice. If you go look at it take a tape measure and do some quick math to figure out what the spindle is actually running. Being dual voltage, it's probably not that large of a motor.

Picked up this Baldor today
Say Impala, nice grinder.

BTW - what's the HP and model no. of your Baldor?

The reason I'm asking is I have a 3/4-HP Baldor model 862RE CL B, that's missing the bottom plate and cap, I'm trying to find out about.

If yours is a 3/4-HP, could you kindly take pictures of the cap and it's info printed on it?

Thanks.

Here is my old craftsman restored. Removed rust with electrolysis and painted. Replaced bearings and just as after a few test runs the power switch died so that got replaced too.

Nice strong grinder. Cost to restore was $30 plus the $20 I paid for the grinder.

Call out to the bench grinder gods!!

Can anyone identify this black and decker bench grinder? It's for sale to me local but guy doesn't know much from talking to him. It is USA made, and guy said 3600 rpm....
How many horsepower? 6 inch? Good grinder for $20?

Any USA made grinder for $20 is a good deal. But is it big enough for you is the question.

HTH, can't imagine them being all that much different, maybe a slightly larger cap on the cap. :dunno:

Cat 712RE
1/2hp
115v
3.4amp
3600 rpm

I find the rests on these models to be just pathetic.

Cool thread. Here is a Thor speedway grinder I restored a few weeks ago. I only bought it to get the craftsman stand it was on. Turned out very nice.

Bagged, Just picked up one of these. The motor runs well, but the bearings/bushings have 1/8" play. Did you replace these on your rebuild?
Thanks

I didn't replace them. I just took the grinder apart, cleaned it out, and put it back together with a new power cord. I only rebuilt the switch.

A new find in this Speedway grinder. It has lots of vibration and movement in bushings/bearings. Any ideas to replace or refurbish the bearings? Open to ideas for this rebuild? It is sitting on a homemade stainless steel base.

ZK,

Thanks!

I gotta think they're going to be close in value. I've been to their website and looked at the parts list, but no specs on the caps MFD range.

I enlarged the picture you posted, but I can't make out the specs on the cap.

Sorry for the trouble, but could you re-open it and jot down the specs?

Thanks, I'm getting close to getting this 1 running.
