Put a wire wheel on the right side (suggest adding a "spark arrester" as they also help arrest flying wires...

They may have dropped it and broken that corner, or cut it off for better WW/Buffer access, or both... :dunno:

The left side had a wire wheel that was essentially just a wheel with wire stubble - when I called about it I asked if he had the guard and he said "sure do!". The right guard was def cut, but being that the guard is cast iron, it being dropped and then cut is very plausible.

This model is an early one as there are no outer covers for the guards and it doesn't appear that there were originally spark arrestors as there are only two drilled & tapped holes for the eye shields on the top of the guards. Also, the tool rests were mounted to the guards rather than on a bar coming out of the base like seen in later 1950's models. I'm guessing this is from late 40's??

Either way, this is going into use methinks. It's beefier than my 1/3 hp craftsman block, which I think I may trade for some help moving a 400 lb butcher block.

Make double use of toes eye guards and make the arresters. probably two piece: an angle up, and a slotted plate down. if you fab part of the eye guard bracket maybe double use for this...

Score of the year for me - picked up this 1/4 HP Blue Point/Snap-On bench grinder. CL seller had it listed for $20 - turns out he lived 1/2 mile away. Said he thought about putting it into the landfill :eyecrazy:

Needs a new cord, is missing tool rests & eye shields, and the previous owner chopped off the bottom of the right guard for some reason, however the thing runs like the day it was new and takes a minute and half to stop spinning. It's pretty heavy too at just over 37 pounds without wheels.

I can't quite make out information on the tag - who do you think made this one? Kingston-Conley? Dayton? It looks identical to the Millers Falls 706(?) and I have seen the same grinder with a Stanley tag at an auction.

That looks like the Thor I just posted above ! Made by the same company ?

Possibly - Thor, Sioux, and Van Dorn were the same company. They manufactured their own equipment. Black & Decker would buy them sometime in the 1940's - the grinders (bench/hand-held/valve) were all made by Van Dorn.

Blue-Point/Snap-On did not make grinders, but re-badged equipment made by somebody else. The Millers Falls grinder is a sure match, but I do not believe that they made their own grinders either. I don't know who made their grinders.

Two differences I notice - the guards on the Blue Point are held on by two set screws on the top. Secondly, the Blue-Point grinder is 3.4(?) amps as opposed to 4.0 amps on your Thor.

They could be both be made by Van Dorn?

I just checked the data plate and it says it was made by the independent pneumatic tool company but physically they look the same ?

Turned out great, and the color is very close to the original of that era. I've never seen a Wissota with that C-H push button switch---very nice.

You should add that grinder to the Wissota thread:

Thought I would post my 3. The Craftsman has a rubber wheel on the left side that a 18" sanding belt can slipped on. Also does anyone know what the black one is?

Thought I had a pic of number 3 but it is a Rockwell built by Baldor.

My friend has purchased this grinder from a Foley saw sharpening set-up.

We are wondering what manufacturer made the grinder - Wissota? :headscrat

I don't know if counts as vintage? I don't know how old it is. It was given to me from the estate of a good friend.

Dayton 1Z707w 8" 3/4 hp bench grinder. It came with the 2 wheel housings and tool rests, but missing the end cover plates and 1 outside flange. Anybody know where I can get a new flange. It is 3.25" diameter and 5/8" bore. I have a good 1hp grinder so I am going to put a wire wheel and a deburing wheel on it.

Outside flange should be very easy to find for that grinder. You already have machined inner flanges that make the wheels run true, so the outer flanges are really just washers--nothing special about them.

BTW, that grinder was made by Doerr and qualifies as vintage

I'm guessing this is a pre-block? Found it in my dad's garage. He didnt even know it was there lol

Didnt see a quench tray, and it looks like it never had a light mounted.

That's a round-top block, and a 1/2 HP commercial model at that. Very nice unit! It may have never had a light - some blocks did not have the gooseneck light. There should be a hole on the back of the sheet metal where it mounted if it was removed.

The slot on the front is where the quench tray was mounted....I think that part is still available.

I think i saw a round cutout on the back that still had the plug in it. Hard to tell, talk about a cramped space. The knockout was gone for the quench tray.

I have a newer flat top cman commercial 1/2 hp block that has a light, but the knockout for quench tray was never removed. It has the same wheel guards as this one.

I bought a flat top 1/4 hp unit yesterday that still has knockouts in place for both the light and the tray. That particular model simply did not include the gooseneck lamp or a tray.

I know that some of the early 1/2 hp grinder models came with the (optional?) heavy duty base, which had its own quench tray. Those grinders would not have had the slot knockout removed for the smaller quench tray and could be removed from the base itself. I don't know if the later flat top models did - torqueman would probably know.

Nope, no clue on M/N; but the voltage rating is 110 so Pre 120, pre 117, and pre 115...

Look in the early (prewar?) catalogs!

Possibly the bolt/stud on the guard was a rest for something someone regularly ground and needed an inside arc? :dunno:

Found this on Craigslist for $75. It's a 1HP Black & Decker model 6818 8" Bench Grinder.

Looks very similar to a craftsman block grinder. Bearings sound good but are original and will be replaced. The entire grinder will be stripped and repainted.

Looks identical to mine except mine is a 1/3hp! I haven't been able to find out anything on mine. If you restore it... um... please take lots of photos! I, well, didn't. Now I have a big box-o-parts.

Jet Electric 10" grinder made in 1979. 2hp motor wired for 115 but can be wired for 230. At some point the cord was replaced with a short one but other than that it works 10p% I think the $20 the guy was asking was more than fair. 92cd7cc6c198cacd00b19cbc8d37f742.jpg0eb5f2bc35660fbfa35c26fa88069375.jpge82a6be722360a7d4106581a631f3fb1.jpg

That's like my walker turner 1/3 HP. I'm missing the left tool support and my right guard is cracked.

Hello GJ, lurker posting alert :hellobye:

According to vintagemachinery, this little guy is from the 40s. Tore it apart and gave it a through cleaning with SimpleGreen, cleaned some rusted bolts, gave the windings a light coat of dielectric grease, rewired it and lubed the shaft. No bearings. It runs pretty smooth.

I do not have a whole lot of use for grinding wheels and have been trying unsuccessfully to find some 4" diameter, 0.5" thick scotch-brite and/or deburring wheels for it - at least not ones that come in 10 or 50 packs. Even wire wheels seem to be tough to come by at those dimensions. Ordered a couple of rubberized wheels from Matz - will see how useful they are.

Wondering if i should give up the search and just get a 6incher.
