I was fartin around with ole rocket stove/patio heater. It was getting hot, but you really had to sit close to it to really feel it. And with the short flew you'd get some smoke in our faces, and it was just too close for comfort. Sooo, I extended the flew to approximately 7'6" compared to the roughly 28" and I raised the feed inlet about 3 inches as well as raised the bed about two inches.
Look at the difference it made :)
I just whipped up a little storage to stand some wood up to dry it out faster but that started catching on fire haha. I put a couple of pieces at a time now. Now we have to move away because it gets so hot. But it works. Oh and I did move it further from my house to outer edge of my patio. I'm going to make a base for it out of some plate I have, with the addition height it is definitely tall. Its 4.5 od 1/8 wall DOM tubing and the collar is 5.5 od 1/2" wall DOM tubing I cut it half to sleeve it over the original flew.
And my neighbor just cut down several oak and hickory trees from past storm damage so, I have plenty of wood to last for a very long time. It likes to eat.
What is the bottom made from, it looks like a freon tank.

That is a 5-gallon portable air tank.

Newest rendition after we had a storm and it blew over. I had some old 3 x 3 legs to a table I had laying around to widen it's footprint. I was going to use plate but thought this looked better haha. Also made a couple of aluminum caps. Once I burn what's inside of it I'll flip it over and cut the original legs off and clean it with a wire wheel then paint it with some high heat paint or if I can find some cerakote paint, I'll try that.

More about a jig than welding. The wife ask me to make her a bunch of 9" cubes out of 3/32" piano wire. They needed to be exactly the same size and square. This is a quick little wood jig I made to weld these up per her specs

wc1.jpeg

wc2.jpeg
This pic shows a couple of scraps of 14ga steel dropped in the slot to help hold down the piano wire and help prevent it from moving while I was tig'n the corners. The scraps of triangular square tube are acting as grounds.

wc3.jpeg
After making a bunch of squares, a second jig was used to hold the wire squares while I welded in the rest of the pieces to make the cube. If she request more of these, I've got a few refinements to the jigs I'm going to make, like putting magnets in the second jig so I don't have to mess with tape.

Very nice work. My skills don't include work that delicate. What is their final function?

I guess you could call them 3 dimensional frames for suspending some small paper sculptures. Generally I don't like posting art on GJ but if someone is really interested in seeing the finished pieces I could post a pic or 2

@Kyrbz I have to wonder why you would hesitate to post that kind of project. Let's see, creativity, ✔️, technical skills, ✔️, play with your tool(s), ✔️ [the steel and metal ones you bunch of deranged ...] most likely in your "garage/shop. So it seems all of the boxes are checked off, so I see that as a must post scenario! Just my take on this forums central focus. Harry 👍

I think there's a joke somewhere along the lines of "if you want to lose friends and followers on social media start posting pics of your art" As I mentioned, my wife ask me to make the wire frames for some small sculptures she was doing for a show. She's more than capable of making the frames herself, but had agreed to do the show on very short notice, so just helping her out to make the deadline. She knit the shapes suspended in the cubes out of a material called paper yarn. Here's a couple of them... I'll also apologize in advance for those offended by me posting knitting on the welding thread 😆

Very cool kyrbz... I've done a few not-that-similar projects with stainless filler rod to make little cooking racks for various sized toaster oven pans. It can be tricky trying to tack-weld that wire together for sure!

Your TIG torch reminds me of my old Miller Diversion 165 machine. Keep up the good work!

It's a Diversion 180, not crazy about the thumbwheel torch that came with it back when I bought it maybe around 2011. Much prefer a pedal.

That stove is super cool, and looks like beast! Question, how do you empty the ashes or does it burn clean enough you don't have to?

I brought my little red wagon in the shop to put a rear hitch on it. The plan is to be able to pull the skid loader trailer and skiddy behind it so we can make less trips to the woods to bring wood home. Plus a neighbor has a gravel pit and I can bring trailer and skiddy in one shot to load dirt so that’ll be nice.
IMG_0520.jpeg

Mocked up to make sure it all clears …..
IMG_0517.jpeg

It’ll never be dumped with a trailer hooked up so this is plenty of clearance !!
IMG_0518.jpeg

The plan is to put a piece of 3/8”x3” angle iron between the frame rails to make it fairly stout. Shouldn’t go anywhere, especially once it’s painted lol

Thanks, I appreciate it.
I have a little drawer in the lower section of the back side made out of 2.5" square tubing and a piece of 2" as the actual scooper. It certainly burns hot enough it does leave some ash but not much.
I'll take a picture tomorrow.

A bit more weldering and some paint (ya know cuz paint makes a welder what he ain’t) and it’ll be ready for service !

I’m debating on welding the tubes together. I think it’s fine like this but it looks funny :dunno:

Nice hammer... 😄
I actually have one just like it, but the handle is kinked a little worse lol

Here's a few of shots of the cleanout shoot or whatever you want to call it haha.

Wanted to use it but the weather turned on us. I'm hoping to use it this weekend to empty it so I can cut off the old link legs and finish welding 3x3s strip it and paint it with some high heat paint.

Nice LITTLE red wagon.

Being from Florida, why do people go sit on a frozen lake for hours. 😜
If you know someone that can make some 3’ long Radio Flyer decals I’d be interested lol

We go ice fishing because the pontoon struggles to move around when there is 2’ of stiff water on top. Drink beer on a pontoon or in a fish house. Either way it’s a balmy 70f and the beer needs to be in a cooler 😂

After some convincing I boogered some weld between the two tubes. It’ll add some rigidity :dunno:
IMG_0545.jpeg

Painted and doneski. Should get tested in a few weeks or a month when the mud goes away. Maybe I’ll get another little red wagon and hook them together. And put a hitch on that one and hook another one behind …… my book keeper wouldn’t approve that. She’s got a pretty tight grip on the checkbook and barely let me get this one !!

I’ve seen south Florida farmers with a virtual train of them behind a tractor.

Very cool! Showed your photos to Mrs.Nortonscustom and believe a large rocket stove may be added to the to-do list.

Been wanting to upgrade my corner storage for a while from the raggedy computer desk I got off marketplace a while ago. Spent some time getting my corner bench assembled this weekend. Been working on this for the last couple weeks. Just need to pick up a couple more bolts and level out the cabinets to wrap it up. 80-something feet of angle iron, couple sheets of plywood, mostly leftover materials from other projects and whatever I could scrounge up on a budget. Please don’t look too closely, I’m not a welder or a woodworker, nor claim to be. But this was a fun project and i got a lot of time under the hood putting it together.

Like many of you, welding is part of my job. I'm not formally trained as a welder--much of my education involved being pointed to a couple of welders--MIG and TIG--and being told "Figure it out".

Anyhow, I think I'll just show off a few of the stupid welding projects I occasionally do. Some are for work, some for play. All of the ones I'm posting today involve beer kegs--as I work at a brewery and "dented kegs" are a common commodity. Keg users seem to be a little careless and kegs are pressure vessels, so need to be in reasonably good shape.

Here are a few stupid keg projects:

The powers that be at the brewery/pub asked for a throne made from kegs for visitors to take "selfies" in. It had to be big enough to allow two people to squeeze into it, and kinda based on the Iron Throne from some dumb movie:

53078271481_699344613a_b.jpg

Yep, that there is a genuine Beerhippie in his natural habitat. Hint: Don't attempt lighting a cigarette with an arc welder when you are the ground.

Another throne. This one was for a friend's dacha outhouse:

31391219007_969f659956_b.jpg

Woodstove for the local ski area top-of-the-hill warming hut:

33644446652_230ab82373_b.jpg

33800642975_602888fe29_b.jpg

That was a lot of work, but damn, if it isn't a fine little wood stove. One fill of odd-size--14" long and split small--wood and it runs all day. Note the water is boiling.

How about a Coleman lantern, using a beer keg for a fount?

31655008316_b223e67051_b.jpg

2 1/2 gallons of fuel makes for some serious run time.

Snowplow took out our mailbox... again. What would be an appropriate mailbox for a brewpub?

35254327234_78a4295628_b.jpg

We actually got approval from our Postmaster to use it! I built and installed it in '17, so it seems the snowplow drivers give it some respect.

Enough for now....
