AWESOME!!!! Hard to believe this is his third day welding....

I dont know guys.... Im still on the fence as to whether or not ZTFab is a real person or not. Has anyone ever talked with him or seen him weld in person?? I think he could be a secret government experiement.... something like "Watson"

ProMig 140. I got it as a pawn shop find for $250 back in 2008 or so when the recession began to hit full swing. From appearances, it had never even had wire run through it before I brought it home. Still had the "starter" spool wrapped in plastic, laying inside. The only downside was the gas regulator that came with those machines never made it to the pawn shop when the guy pawned it. For $250, I'm not complaining!

I've started teaching myself welding using a Lincoln Electric 180HD and figured I'd throw up some pics of stuff I've done. Bear in mind, I've been doing this for around a month now and am very much a home hobbyist. Metal fab isn't my main line of work (I work in the tech industry) but wanted to teach myself new skills.

My welding station. made of 3/16 angle angle and steel mesh for the top. The cabinet stores:
1 x 4.5" angle grinder with flap disc
1 x 4.5" angle grinder with cut off wheel
Assorted C clamps
Assorted vice grips
Assorted wire brushes



I've looked at other weld pics in this thread and I think mine are pretty good for a beginner .. not quite at the point where they look like a stack of coins laid out but getting there.

Started this the other day, life size 14 point whitetail. The rack is supposed to copy the deer mount in the pics on the table.

Even welded the skull up with o/a for s***'s and giggles.

Still have to make the neck vertebrae and a wall mount plaque of some kind.

I'm also going to go over the whole thing with a 4-1/2" grinder and some 60 grit flap wheels. I've got a new box of Pferd Prolifan discs, they're great for fillets and inside corners.

Here are a couple of simple things I've done or am doing

Brackets for wall mounted speakers in my garage.

The back part is a track bar bracket for my truck and the part in the front is a trolley for my heavy bag. It will run on overhead track for a gate. I probably should finish these...

This is a welding cart I built for my Powermig 180. It has leafs that fold up and lock into place on each side (I use them to set my cutters or marking/measuring stuff on). The side panels are sheet with a step rolled into the top and bottom, The door is sheet and square stock welded together. The back holds two tanks. I keep my helmets, gloves, spool gun and wire in the bottom cabinet. Frame is coated with a truck bed spray bomb and the sides are a Rustoleum spray bomb with a clear coat

why don't people weld without at least a long sleeve shirt and some gardening gloves or something?

i wear at least a sweat shirt and have some fireproof gloves when i do.

I've very rarely wear any gloves while welding. They interfere with my feel of the torch handle. If welding with a lot of amps and its getting warm, I have some gloves I will wear. Same for wearing long sleaves ... hate'em and only if welding all day long to prevent " Sun Burn "

Just subscribed to this thread and thought I should contribute.

I am reorganizing my garage/shop and decided to move all of the chip, spark and dust making things away from the engine building, wrenching area of the shop. That required a welding bench since I shared a metal bench with both areas.

The top is 5/16 plate, top support is 1-1/2" x .125 wall square tube with 2" x .125 wall legs w/leveling pads. I thought, since we are getting our first good snow storm of the year, finally, it'd be a good painting project for my 6 year old son. He helped with the welding, probably 8-10" of bead, so I figured he could paint it too...

He put on 3 coats because he thought it needed "thick paint" because it was a welding bench. He only used 3/4 of a quart to achieve the drip, run and streak laden finish that you see here.

Surprisingly he only ended up with a small patch of yellow paint in his hair. His clothes, hands and shoes are another story though.

Very nice! Any reason you didn't mount the blade directly to the plate?

Also, when did you get enough snow to plow? I've only had to do the driveway once this season!

Looks like he kept the hudraulics for angling, used the plate as the "truck frame". We also have no snow this year, but it ain't over yet!

Small project I did on Sat. Doing some updates to the front suspension of the T-Bird, need to get more travel from the struts, Old system had too many mistakes to be fixable. But one of the things I needed was a way to hold the spindle at the right height and camber angle. Then I will build a new mounting system incorporating the cast angle I want.

This is my stand, using 1/8 alum of which I have tons of offcuts from other jobs so I use it whenever I can.

I am not a great alum welder just don't do enough but here is a closeup

The bobcat does have a float setting on the boom control valve, however I kept the chain because when using the loaders float, the front 2 wheels tend to come off the ground and you lose some traction. Also in the rare event where I want it to be a truck plow again, nothing was modified.

Ohh that was Christmas day. I live in the town of Pompey, in the hills. We always get a little more snow then anyone closer to the city, unless your north of the thruway..lol.

I'm north of the thruway but only just, town of Clay. Last season was brutal but this year it seems like we haven't gotten any more than anyone else in the area.

I would show some close ups of the welds but welding aluminized pipe to zinc plated just plain stinks in more ways then one.

I like the jack stand holder.. Those things always seem to be in the way. I keep packing mine back in the original box they came in, because it keeps them nicely put away.. but a pain to do. I'm going to copy that idea one day..

Nice jack stand rack! I've been meaning to use some scrap angle I have to make some bases with casters for a few of my stands so I can make them mobile when I need to. They would be handy for moving axles around during rebuild, regear, etc.

Steve - Nice job. My O/A torch cart is a modified hand truck with dimensions that are similar to yours and you'll be happy to know that it hasn't tipped over in the 25 years since I built it!

first off the build is being done on a blue collar working mans budget.The only way I can achieve this is doing everything myself.as for the egs. yes the steel pipe is no problem,as for the stainless. I built another complete system out of stainless and swore i would not make the same mistake twice.in tight quarters the stainless is imposible to hold it were you want it it pulls so un predictable,also it gets brittle when heated and cracks.and also it turns a goldish rust color.and I hate that look.I know there are many diferent grades of stainless I think a 409 would work well.but after talking to a very reputable turbo guy he also agreed that steel would be a better choice. after it is completely welded up I will sandblast it and ceramic coat it..

the fitting is a mild steel pipe fitting. supplied by mc master carr. co. sometimes you gotta think out side the box. and use what is available to ya.

Sorry to disapoint but after driving the car with the supercharger on it with no wheelwells on it the whole motor bay is covered with tar rocks stuck to everything. but don't worry we will make it look as good as it can look with them on.going to fabricate them from scratch.

Nice work Steve! I notice a lot of great details--the steel bands for holding the tanks on is great. That is the right way! I see a lot of guys use ratchet straps, but cutting or grinding can cause them to fail and the tank are then loose.

The tip over guard over the topf the valve that double as a shelf was a nice touch.

I'm also a big fan of the fire extinguisher mounted right on the cart as well.

A very well thought out project!

Thanks for the compliments on the jack stand rack. It was made mostly from scrap, but I did have to run to Lowes and get some 3/16 x 1 flat bar because there was not enough scrap pieces that were long enough. The idea came from similar projects I have seen here. Thanks to everyone here who contributes photos and ideas!
