New project idea.

A table for my South Bend 9A lathe.

The idea came from this one.

28b2866c7cf276ba95fb483ac0dd210c.jpg

I was initially going to make it out of 1 1/2" or 2" angle, like the table in the photo. I like the clean lines of it. but with my welding skills I worry that the welds on the end of that angle butted into the top and bottom frames might not be the best. A tube has a better joint with more inches of available weld. And when I looked at the pile of stock at school, I noticed a few sticks of 1 1/2" tubing. And the remaining piece of 1/8" x 24" wide sheet metal (Left over after my welding cart work), was 7' long.

So instead of the planned 2'x5' table, it became a 2'x7' table. That will give space for a collet rack and extra tooling. Top frame will have 5 cross members and bottom frame will have 3. Bottom frame will be covered with plywood as will the top, but the top will have that 1/8" added as a wear surface. There will be 6 verticals of the same tubing.

4 7' pieces
8 21" pieces
6 29" vertical pieces

Got all but 6 pieces cut to length on the chop saw and beveled and ready for tacking and welding and assembly.

Photos next week when I start getting the pieces put together.

Bill

Thanks for liking my design enough to create your own table. I can assure you that my design is plenty strong AS IS. If you are concerned about the seams/**** joints you could always weld triangular pieces in the corners..I debated that but after it was welded up, if felt no need.. these SB lathes can’t weigh 400 lbs..it’s not that much weight really.. looking forward to pictures. Feel free to PM me any questions

It's not your design, but my welding skills that worried me. I know it's overbuilt the way I'm doing it. I might be tempted to do one your way too. What were your dimensions and material sizes?

Got most everything cut and ends prepped. I little more flap disc work and on the layout table they'll go for tacking and welding.

I also have to admit that your very clean design for a welding cart was also an inspiration that then morphed into a different design for my welding cart I am in the process of building. Here's yours:

d67d426ffc16c132951649b05a1f7699.jpg

I had previously started designing a cart with a cantilevered shelf like yours has. But then I ran into a deal on 2 Kennedy cabinets for $70. Not as good a deal as your Kennedy boxes, but they gave me the idea of incorporating a cabinet into the design. This would give me a place to store things and then I could set the welder on top.

View media item 101240
I liked the proportions of the tubing you used to the size of the cart, but I didn't have tubing that size. So I turned to another method. For my initial cantilevered shelf I had bent up a pan out of 1/8" sheet metal. I decided to use that instead of using tubing for the cart. Still used some oversized (1 1/2") tubing for the vertical frame. Notice how the casters are attached on the front, like yours.

Looking good! Practice makes perfect, just keep up the good work. I’ve been welding for over 30 years so I’m pretty confident in my abilities, but I understand your hesitation on some of my designs.

Just finished up this fire pit I built from an old butane tank, need to get it in some Black paint now. I rolled the 1" Squair tubing. with the red ring roller on the table behind it, another one of my project.

I also made one from a tank head, it doesn't get much air flow that far down so getting it lit is difficult and it doesn't burn well on calm days. I don't want to add vent holes because it will leak ash on my patio.

JDN, any more details on the grapple? Order a new tractor and that is 1st on the list, but $2k list is nuts!

What details would you like?

I have close to $2k in materials for that grapple. Its likely heavier then you are needing made from 3/4" AR 400 weighing 1700#.

How true. I made a few for my friends and when I looked up my boy was too old as well... also 10 now.

But now we can build real bikes...

Slowtwitch, do you fabricate bicycle frames now? That is definitely on my bucket list.
Where are you located out of curiosity? Im in LA.

I have a beefy grappler and that makes mine look like a toy! Nicely done! All I can say is that buying and using mine has been the best 2 grand I have ever spent as it was a huge help in clearing my little 18 acres.

Way heavier then I need!

Any sketches/prints/models that I can scale down to fit a CUT?

Can you open cad drawings? If so what file type do you want?

Yes!

I run solidworks, native is best. I should also be able to open .stl and .stp, will have to check. Shoot me a pm and we can discuss further.

The first,,, the nut is up in a recess and we were figuring out how to make a socket for it then figures out to simply extend the nut for a common wrench.

Yeah, for fun. Have been doing it on and off for 25 yrs. My son is a bike freak, so may need to dust off the torches and get back into it. I'm in MT, but developed the mtn bike bug down south of LA long ago.

Could run a breather pipe from holes or weld over a dimpled plate on outside with a slot oriented upwards so ash can't fall out.

Here is a photo of the bottom frame I put together this evening. The sheet metal for the top is in the foreground.

Got some more cutting and grinding done this morning in fabrication class.

Going back at 2 to do some welding on the table. Hope to get the top frame together and maybe start on the vertical pieces.

Another welding card.
I used the open end of the 1.5" square tubing for my tig filler rod tube storage as well as some other small items. Not sure if I want to paint it yet, but might do a red to match the parts washer and tool storage boxes.

I thought I'd share this...it's usually a PITA to remove fence post I've driven in with my post driver, it's even a bigger PITA when they are broken off at or below ground level. My G/F is an engineer and she was impressed how well it worked.
