Made a fair amount of progress on my welding cart. It’s 18”x24”, 3 shelves 12” apart with my current welder going on the top. Then there’ll be a 10”x18” shelf on the rear that’ll be capable of holding two bottles, should I ever get a Tig welder, multiprocess welder or spool gun. And it’ll be sitting on 5” casters from Harbor Freight.

Still need to pick up either 1/8” sheet metal or expanded metal for the shelves and then figure out a handle.

The whole reason I’m doing this is because the biggest issue I have with the cart that came with my Miller that there’s only one shelf under the machine and there’s just not enough room. So based on my measurements, my new cart will be roughly the same overall length a the current cart, but about 5” wider.

Also, don’t judge the welds to harshly lol I struggle on short welds on thin material, always have.

I've had a little HF flux welder for a few years, but never really did much with it. Finally decided to make a little 3pt "carryall" with some of the scrap metal that we found when we cleaned up our old homestead.

I confess I had no idea what I was doing, no idea I was welding stuff way bigger than the little welder could handle. Had a buddy make a few pointers and suggestions to make it work... And it's ugly as sin, but it works, and I've towed some trailers and yanked some logs with it without it breaking so far.

Definitely got bit by the bug though, had a few other projects since, and just bought a Millermatic 211 to help do some retrofitting of some old non 3pt tractor implements.

When I bought my welder it came with a cheap HF cart that I never liked. Don't remember where I saw the idea, but I picked up a cheap 3 drawer metal file cabinet for $25 (it's pretty heavy duty!) and using some tubing I had laying around, we built a better cart. It has a plate on the back for a tank, a handle to move it around, couple hooks on the side to the cables and gun. It was a fun project to do with my son and I'm really happy how it turned out.

I thought I had a finished picture, but this is all. I painted it with black textured paint. It should last a long time.

I would guess this is a US vs. Canadian built difference in the frame. Perhaps one is more readily available but needs to be modified to fit.
He mentioned in another thread that it was a convertible with the wrong frame, so they replaced it with an El Camino frame that was a little longer. The convertible frame and the El Camino frame are probably stiffer, I’m guessing.

h--quite a project. Why shorten the frame?
Sorry, I missed your question.
The car is a convertible and they have a heavier built frame to keep flex to a minimum. Someone put a standard frame under it some time back and the door gaps were closing up so the owner found a frame from the same year ElCamino. The frames are the same as the convertables except the tail piece is longer on the ElCamino. So basically we swapped tail pieces.
I put more pics and detail on my thread if you want to see more, thanks.

Made some more progress on my welding cart. Got another hour in on it today. Still needs mounting plates for the wheels, wheels, a raised lip around the top and middle shelves, a half moon bracket for the bottles, stiffeners for the bottle rack, a handle, then paint.

Got my welding cart on its wheels. Also got the supports on for the bottle rack. Got the lip around the top shelf welded on, still need to do the center shelf. I got 5’ of 3/4” steel tubing, .062” wall coming in this week that I hope I can bend into a handle without a large tubing bender. Probably gonna add a gusset over each rear wheel. I also need to figure out how I wanna set up the retention for two bottles. Then paint.

It's in my build thread, so I guess I'm double posting, but it was a fun diversion while I had some holiday down time.

I drew up a chassis table that will double down as a welding table once I'm done building a crawler chassis. I have a 3/8" 4x8 sheet from a bench we scraped at work for the top. I grabbed a 44" HF cabinet on their black Friday sale so I can store all layout and fixturing tools along with specialty grinder and stuff.

I burned some store bought caster plates to the legs so I could get to them in position.

The rest of the frame was fit together upside down.

I used a mag drill to bore some holes through the frame so I could bolt a cradle to hold the cabinet.

The holes were sleeved and then I just fused them in.

I fit the cradle in position and welded it so I wouldn't have to worry about hole alignment. The slop in the sleeved holes helps as well.

My wife painted it.

My little kiddo made her mark while I was inside one night and I ended up punching her initials and the date into it before the top went on.

I plotted a coarse pattern and punched a few 5/8" holes with the mag drill.

I cut the fixed jaw off 4 cheap HF F clamps I had and burned on some 5/8 detent pins to make some table clamps. Just an excuse to upgrade to more StrongHands.

Finally I took a burnisher with a interleafed wheel and knocked all the oxide off. I was getting annoying grounding issues through the rust and it looks better for less than an hours work. Glad I had a half respirator though, the dust was coming off thick.

All ready for fixture up a crawler frame.

Off topic here, I can weld but never good enough for me.

I approached my superiors, to see if they will sign me in as an apprentice welder so I can go back to school during downtime between jobs. It would be a huge benefit to me as a jman millwright.

Awesome. Definitely post back what happens. You can never be too qualified as a tradesman. Just makes it easier to find work in the long run.

I got rid of my gantry crane since it was a pain to use to load my plasma table. But I still needed a way to lift 100-400lb sheets of steel so I made a Davit crane from a Princess Auto (same as Harbor Freight) pickup truck crane and 440 lb AC winch. The only thing I saved from the truck crane was the hydraulic cylinder and the telescopic boom, The crane is bolted to a reinforced 6” slab4ad0dfdf0a715ae65cc1ea649fd5d544.jpg

Really love your setup there with the crane and sheet storage under the plasma. I had been planning on doing similar sheet storage under my Langmuir Crossfire Pro table, you're the first I've seen to do it. Nice work!

Working out of a 2 car garage every square inch counts and doing this was the best solution I could come up with that's organized by thickness.

It was originally a Wright CNC 4x4 but I cut the table up and expanded it to 4x5 and upgraded to run on linear rails and have a fully welded frame. The only things I saved from the original table were the Z axis system and the X&Y motors and the electronic control box, everything else I built

Finished up all the welding on my cart. Got a bunch of hooks on and spray a coat of rattlecan primer. Gonna throw some black on it tomorrow and hopefully either tomorrow night or Monday, I can transfer everything over.

I added a shelf to hold the plasma and water tank and a small shelf for steel storage under my Langmuir Pro but I wish I had gone that direction as well. I like idea of storage by gauge as well as the lift. Nicely done! [emoji106]
