Re: Show is your wood projects

Billcole - Love the woodwork and garage cabinets...but I really like the flyrod! A man has to have the proper priorities!

Oh boy, I'm a total newbie compared to some of these amazing posts. Nice work everyone!

But, the shop is finished, and I made it through my first project very recently (yes, norm's adirondack chair). I did it sort of backwards... built a full shop with dust collection and all tools etc. and THEN started learning woodworking.

My plan is to build projects that I have a high chance of being successful at, that will be useful for our home, and will ramp up in difficulty with each project.

Next, I'm going to repeat this project a few times to perfect what I've learned so far (and because it's not fun to sit by yourself in an adirondack chair is it?).

edit: anyways, this was built from rough sawn white oak.

5 drawer 'cabinet'.

Sets on one of my workbenches, and is used to store all my sanding/grinding/buffing supplies.

Some truely amazing and beautiful stuff in this thread!

I'd never done a fancy finish job on wood before, so took on restoring the first guitar I ever bought (1992 model entry level Ibanez):

Start:
IMG00530-20110406-1549.jpg

Sanding (also fabbing up the custom bridge I made to cover the old tremelo bridge holes)
IMG00543-20110410-1940.jpg

Stained and metal-flake "burst" edges added. I also added some flake to the blue areas by holding the paint can a few feet above the body and spraying across it - the paint floated away but the flake settled. You can see it if you look closely

I laminated together a bunch of walnut/black walnut. I also made the base out of 2"x2" square tubing and 1/4" plate for the legs, then clear coated the whole thing like crazy.

I'm just finishing up my kitchen remodel. I spent months in the garage milling lumber from a local pecan tree. . The corian countertops aren't finished yet (got to sand the seams and edges).

Here's the results.

Here is a work bench

Some shop cabinets

I'd like to know more about the doors on the cabinets. What I can see is 1x4's and tongue and grove bead board.

What I can't see is how you mounted the bead board to the back of the frames. Did you grove those too? Or just router out a 1/4 inch channel for it to sit in.

I'm going to try and build some wardrobes for the master bed room and your doors seem to be something I think I can accomplish.

Here's a clock table I just finished up. The clock is Howard Miller from Lamps Plus. The base was made from an African Mahogany door that had a split panel and was never finished. I glued the octagon for the top but in full disclosure, had it CNC cut. Hey for $85, they cut the circle and the deep rabbit for the clock and the shallow rabbit for the glass. Since my circle cutting jig for the bandsaw and routers were too small and I would have had to make new ones, the decision was pretty easy. The finish is MacLac Industries conversion varnish over a brown mahogany stain.

I just picked up a new lathe that's going to take up quite a bit of room in my garage. I found this place while Googling for layout ideas - I can't believe I never saw this site before, some really great stuff being done and really great ideas.

So for my first post I'd like to say hello from the real Jersey Shore, which is nothing like it's portrayed on that idiot TV show. (and you can tell the tourists from the locals in that the tourists, aka "bennies" call it "Da Shore" we call it "the beach")

No pictures of my garage right now as it looks like a bomb went off while I'm reorging. But i will show a few pictures of what i do out there, which is mostly making fishing lures for surf fishing for Striped bass.

To make use of an otherwise silly 'formal living room' behind french doors, we decided to make it a library. Ten foot ceiling, long wall is 15', short is 10'. Cabinets are 3/4" birch ply set on a 2x4 base with 2"x 3/4" red oak facing. The boxes in the lower opening keep a variety of riff raff from looking too messy. They're all full now that the poly is complete.

We 'warmed up' with three simple cabinets in the garage, and despite butchering that, figured what the hell and ran with it. Three years start to finish all told, but there were many very long breaks where the room was just full of boxes. I'd guess three months' worth of full weekends could do it. The color looks better with a real camera, but oh well.

And yeah, I have an air hockey table in a library.

While not as nice or as fancy as most of the above, here's a few. (Currently working on a &' X 14" X20" "toolbox" of black walnut. Going to try an inlay in the lid.

I joined GJ for the organizational information - and you b@#$%^&'s got me hooked on mechanic's tools! :D

First is a box made out of some pallet wood. Nice coloring / figure for a pallet.

Second are some pens from the lathe and the trays I made for them. Some of the pens are acrylic but there's wood in the picture.

Third is a gavel I made for my daughter's United Nations class.

Fourth is a cubby my kids store their school bags and coats in. It's in the living room by the front door.

Cheers

Jim

A couple of years ago, my wife saw a cute little playhouse for sale. After inquiring about the price, I said "I can make one cheaper." Made it from scratch and it's a replica to our 1923 Craftsman-style 2 story house. There is a loft above the porch where they can look out the dormer. Made the eave brackets, too.
The kitchen was looking tired and was terribly outdated, although the cabinets were solid and there was no way to reconfigure the kitchen. I made new doors out of cherry with red mahogany stain, made new face frames for the upper and lower boxes, skinned the upper boxes with 1/4 cherry plywood, and added an extension to the one end for more cabinet space. I get into the corner with a set of bi-fold hinges. Since I covered an outlet, we keep the toaster and can opener in the cabinet and use it there.
With all of the small pieces of cherry left over, I made a knife block to match the rest of the cherry.
