IIRC, Ampco still makes them, but they are solid alloy, not just plated.

There is a early brand of sockets (1920s?) that were copper plated, but just as a finish.

The earliest account for wrenches like this one is from a Plomb 1939 catalog a GJ member found.

Yes I've seen Ampco (aluminum bronze) and Berylco (beryllium copper) examples. I have a 12" Ampco and it looks newer, actually almost a clone of WF steel wrenches.

Cool tools but in handling/use they oxidize quickly to a dark grey-green, and also make your hands smell funny.

Here is my new addition, almost new looking black oxide Proto Professional 706-SL Clik-Stop. The knurl is still shiny.

Updated photo of them hanging up. I've ran out of space to hang them all but my favorites are up there. 100% Diamond adjustables up there.

I stumbled on all four of these at a local farm auction and couldn't pass them up. The bottom doubles are labeled "Diamond Tool & Horseshoe" but the letters are all stamped in and not raised like the rest of the Diamond tools I have ...

The KHT adjustables are early Diamond Calk wrenches and are pretty neat I think.

I'd love to see your collection !! I've been working on mine for a while now and always seem to find something interesting.

Like this 6". Stamped lettering like the two oddball doubles.

Got a few neat additions to add.

First off I have this mystery Wright 10" adjustable. I know nowadays they farm their adjustables out to Western Forge, I also have 2 of those. I don't know much about older Wright stuff, or if they even made it in-house back then but I doubt it. An interesting feature of this wrench is the teardrop shaped hang hole.

The closest thing I have found is this 8" Peck, Stow, & Wilcox Co. (Pexto) Angle Adjustable also with a teardrop shaped hang hole.

However I think these 2 were not made by the same mfr, there are similarities and differences too. The Wright has a coarser thumb wheel with 3 threads vs 4, as well as thumb wheel location being different.

The Wright has a rougher overall finish than the Pexto. Also, depressed panel areas on both wrenches don't match up, with "WRIGHT" stamped but other lettering forged in on other side tells me it was probably rebranded.

Also picked up a Utica 8" Select-O-Lock and a Vlchek 6" in the group shot.

Three Danielson-pattern 6" adjustables. The Vlchek and Proto LA are very similar. The Proto Professional (black) is in the newer head profile, jaws are about 1/4 inch longer. Not sure if it opens wider, I'll have to check. This particular example also has the Clik-Stop feature.

Thanks. I often use an adjustable to get a simple twist on something. Most often just stubborn plumbing fittings I don't want to mar up in general though, and really no high torque mechanical fasteners beside a motorcycle axle nut or something similar. I remember there was a looong thread going for a while about using adjustable's a short while back :spit:

So I gotta ask...how are those Milwaukee wrenches anyhow?

They do pretty LOOK awesome

Not like I NEED any others but dang!

Just picked up this 12" Snap-on/Blue-Point dual branded adjustable made by Diamond Tool & Horseshoe. I have two 4" examples of these, but the bigger ones always seem to command a premium bc of the Snap-on name, so I pass. This one wasn't priced in the stratosphere so it came home with me.

I was also excited because I have a Diamond 12" special thin wide opening wrench I'd been wanting to compare to a "standard" Diamond 12". Measurements taken with dial calipers.

Snap-on/Blue-Point:
-max opening 1.4"
-head thickness max .71"
-head thickness min .475"

Diamalloy special thin wide opening:
-max opening 1.57"
-head thickness max .65"
-head thickness min .4"

So there you have it, they live up to their name.
Interestingly enough, the thin wide has a slightly thicker handle (.375" vs .35")

I dont use adjustable wrenches very often. Mostly in plumbing situations. I Once had an automotive teacher say "We don't Use Adjustable Wrenches in Automotive work" . I know what he intended..... but sometimes...... you don't have a choice, as long as you are careful.

I recently picked these 2 up on special at my local Sears before it closed.
These locking adjustable wrenches have a place in your tool box if you do any kind of bolt and nut turning on rusted or worn fasteners. You can also use them as clamps on sheet metal and not worry about marking the surface as vice grips do.

Have used them a few times and I will say you need to be careful when closing the clamp as it can pinch the skin on your hand. If you don't know what I mean you will for sure when it happens. I never had an issue with vice grips doing that, so It is inherent in the Craftsman design. I don't see myself using them much. I just need to be aware and be careful. If I were to use them a lot I would upgrade to a better made set but these are fine for my limited use.

I’ve always kept a bag of tools in the trunk of my work car. This 8 inch adjustable wrench has been in that bag for at least the last 15 years or more. I have no clue where I got it. The wrench is a “Lobster” brand and was made in Japan. It actually seems like an okay tool.

Those Lobsters are funky cool, Jim. If I ever see one for sale I will get it.

Here's my 2 most recent additions.

An 8" Stanley USA that is clearly a JP Danielson pattern. I guess most Stanley adjustables I see are made overseas, they usually fly under the radar, so this surprised me. It has only been used a few times. Also weird, part number 1536 for an 8" wrench? :headscrat

Next is one I'd never heard of before. A 10" Largrip adjustable made by the Vulcan Mfg. Co. of Winona, Minn. This one is not in that good of shape but I always like finding wrenches from obscure mfrs. It has two interesting marks I've attached closeups of.

Couple more pics of the Largrip. Look at the cross section of the dynamic jaw slide, I have seen similar styles on the old curved handled adjustables but not on a traditional "Crescent" type that I can recall, although I'm sure there is one or more out there. upside down cross/plus sign.
