anybody know the best way to use this nice little drill chuck kit? pretty complete and since it's probably 40 years newer than my Cannedy-Otto drill press I doubt i'll keep it.

unless I end up buying a Craftsman drill press because of this thread and Garage Journal.

any information to pass on to me greatly appreciated.

I haven't got a clue, but it's fascinating. Do you have a model number on the kit to start a search ? It almost seems like an impact set, but why would it have a chuck ? :headscrat

Jake those are all great questions. there are not any #'s or markings on the box. the big chuck which moves nicely in two halfs says Sears Roebuck made in USA and underneath that is Simpson Sears Limited Canada. on the other end is a model # 665256560 and it says Craftsman. there is a patenened # 2780944

on the silver chuck is says supreme model B 14T33 Chicago, ILL 5/64 to 1/2 cap. 33 taper

thanks for helping

94: Gear reducer thingy?? I think you almost have it young man. I'm wondering if this was used to screw things into items before they had good hand drills??

You could use it in a drill to slow them down or drill press to auto tap. The old drills went from 0-60 at the click of the trigger :spit:

I found this tonight and brought it home. Bought it from original owner that bought it in 1964 and also handed me the manuals. its a 1/2 HP with 6 inch wheels and the commercial version that he said I can wire up for 220. also has original wheels that look new and he said only used a handful of times because he is a wood worker. also came with the crown top stand. Plugged it in and purrs like a lion and the light works too.

Has any one yet said the years that the Crown Top logo was used? I will post a few soon. It seems to me that some of the tools I bought in the late 70s early 80s may have the Crown Top. Very well made tools though, whenever they were made, they have many years left in them. Thanks for starting the thread.

Hi Bob, we share the same last name! The crown top logo was used for a while, on many different items and from several different manufacturers that wore the Craftsman logo. I'm sure there may be still some crown top NOS sitting on some hardware store shelf somewhere but the manufacturing dates were around the 60-70's.

I'd be careful trying to power tap with that thing.

Damn, this thread is like looking at the Sears catalogs from the 50's and 60's when they had everything from clothing, appliances, furniture, home and farm equipment and tools. We didn't have a sears store in our town for years only the two catalogs they produced. I always wanted one of those cool metal lathes. Had to subscribe.

Here are a couple more. My dad's saber saw and Uncle Holland's drill kit. Some of the ones that I thought were crown top were not, but there are probably more hiding out there.
Funny about the Sears catalog. I grew up poring over them every season. It seemed like they had every thing a man (boy) could want!

Hmmm, it seems I can only load one per post. I think it's because this crazy IPAD names everything the same name.:dunno:

From pictures I've seen , I would bet that it is a power tapping attatchment for a drill. It also looks a lot like a part I have seen from Fein. Ken.

Going thru all the Craftsman catalogs I've been able to pinpoint it from 1960 - 1979.

That is really cool. Are you in Canada by chance? That looks like a canadian craftsman box.

If I'm not mistaken, Sears will calibrate that style for free, for life. I know for sure that style carries a lifetime swap warranty, I already swapped an old broken one for brand new, no questions asked.

i thought i'd post the pictures of the Craigs listing so anybody looking at this thread will know what we are talking about after next week.

nice old fashioned goodness there. i was just offered a big Proto one for $600 while i was buying some other tools from a guy and he said he paid $1200 for his 4 footer. yes it was bigger than this one, but i don't work on D9 bulldozers any longer.

I can't image the look I would get if I walked into my local sears and asked if they could calibrate a torque wrench. "Calibrate? a what? :headscrat"

:lol_hitti I can just imagine it now.

GM requires development tools (DMMs, O'scopes, mics., torque wrenches, ...) be certified/calibrated on a schedule. I have several SO dial and click 3/8" & 1/2" t. wrenches that were kept calibrated by MPG's metrology lab.

They told me the beam wrences are always spot on.

I knew I had some more Crown Tops, that I love.

This one has had a lot of rough love over the many many years I've had it. (Out lasted 1st wife, anyway.)

This level is just as old, but does not shown the years. (Oh, please excuse the newly acquired 3/8" Drive =V= Series Spinner Speed Ratchet. I just had to show it off.)

Mobo: I really like that metal case you got with those like new tools.

I stopped by an estate sale and found this sitting on the bench and it was at the end of the day. i also bought his old C box and might post that on the Garage sale thread once i find out what's in it. i am not sure these wrenches have ever been used or the box for that matter and if they have VV on them is that maybe 70's or 80's vintage? i didn't dicker with the $15 asking price.

According to lauver's Cman date code thread -

VV = Easco, ca. 1974 - 1989

VV continued = Danaher, ca. 1990 - 2011

If the tools were bought at the same time as the box, then earlier in the timeline.

;)

That's my 2nd set and has some extra wrenches from my 1st (stolen) set.

I like your tube bending, gutting, and flaring kit.

The spinner is a recent addition. I'm not sure it fits in the Crown Top Logo collection thread, but it is just so unusual I fell in love with it the 1st time I saw one on this site. :lol_hitti

Thanks, btw.
