Not sure where you got that 1973 ending date for Crown labels, I believe it went several years later and there was overlap. I have stuff with both Crown and rectangular labels on it

Reposting the picture below. I think Outlaw has posted it around the forum before. I may have to do some more research. :dunno:

Yeah that chart's not accurate.

Understand there is overlap of usage for a couple of years. Just because a new logo comes out does not mean the old logo disappears then too.

The earliest I can find the Crown logo is the 1959 Craftsman catalog but it may have been out in 1958.

The oval with wings emblem shows up in the 1948 catalog.

Edit on Ebay a 1975/1976 catalog shows a picture of a hammer and a router with the Crown logo.

Craftsman 9-4459 Tweezer and smaller size stainless 9-40996 ruler I just picked up at a sale. This ruler has to be the tiniest crown top logo I've seen at 2/10".

3/4 trumps my lil 1/3 but they're both crowns, what is the date on yours? Mine is 10/1974, I picked it up Saturday from a garage sale for $30, missing an eye shield and a tool rest but I have extras from a parts grinder that will get put to use on here.

Yours is also newer than mine.
$30 is a very very good price.

This guy was more than that.

I think the 'A' means 1st shift.:dunno:

I'll need to get everything not shown:

  • eye shields
  • spark arrestors
  • tool rests
  • mounting feet
  • wheel guard covers
  • lamp and lamp cover
OR, maybe I'll use it as a donor for other projects.

OK, just messin'

The parts from a more common 1/3hp or 1/2hp should work just as well to get Sad Sack up and running again. Save the rare ones, sacrifice the common stock.

That is too cool. Sears Canada had quite a few different (better) offerings compared to us down in the states.

Couple of boxes I picked up over the last few weeks.
First one came from Community Forklift up in Edmonston, MD. Paid $23 dollars. Has some surface rust, but is solid and the tray was with it.

This next one I picked up at an estate sale outside of Annapolis, MD. not much more rust except for the latches, those look to be beyond repair, and no tray, but still quite solid. Paid $2
How hard is it to find the trays for these? Would like to get one for this box.

The second picture shows the different handles and badges
The bottom box I believe is the earliest, it has an all metal handle and the "Craftsman" lettering is raised on the badge.
The middle box has the same raised "Craftsman" badge but the handle is I believe the "Plastisol" coated metal handle.
The top box I beleive is the newest, the plastic handle is different and th badge the "Craftsman" lettereing is recessed.

I finally got around to taking close-ups of the changes in the Crown logo that bluebolt mentioned way back on p.3...

The second logo existed by 1971 for sure...

Honestly I don't really know. Its my first ever wood working tool. I made a pretty good bunch of not straight cuts haha. Ran well it seemed. Came with a metal stand too.

The amps should be on the written on the plate on top or side, along with horsepower and model number. Great router, I passed on one recently due to the high price and fact that I already have two craftsman routers already. Still wouldn't mind having one.

NOT Crowntop.....but WORTHY......

Scored this @ the Portland swap meet last Saturday.....

It's shown in my 1955 Craftsman Hand Tools catalog for $34.95....

( I paid a little bit more than that...:D..)

Spent an hour on it yesterday, giving it a quick clean-up and am pretty happy with the results....not bad condition for a 60 year old tool box....

It was sitting on top of a Monkey Ward roll cab of the same era....but negotiated a "deal" on just the top box and contents....

Found some interesting stuff inside (not much Craftsman)....will post details if anybody is interested...

God Bless you Duke Gortler....where ever you are......your top box and tools are in GOOD hands....:3gears:

Duke kept good care of that box before it was passed on. It's in great shape.

But, I have to break some bad news to you. That isn't a Crown Top box. It's a Heritage Logo box, making it older than you thought. Bonus.

You need to go back and read my post......especially the title....;)

That box is about as old as I am....so it's a little out of my era but ANY craftsman stuff ....Crowntop and PRIOR is ALL GOOD for me....

I have an older Heritage logo 3 drawer rollcab...with the sliding locking drawer front cover......that needs cosmetics.......

Duke's box will be happy sitting on top of that..once I paint it.....I'm sure...

I'm thinking Hammertite should have a close match to the top box?

A new (old) piece of Crown Top that I picked up from my grandfather this afternoon.

A model 9-44641 (Western Forge) 1/2"dr torque wrench with original box (w/ bonus vintage duct tape added). No paperwork though (it might be in one of his folders in the shop). As long as I can remember this wrench lived in it's box and only came out on the rare occasions that it needed to be used, and then it went right back in. I'll continue the tradition.

Kind of hard to find these with the knockout for the Carpenter square still in it. I usually refinish these but I'm considering leaving the rusty look. I like the old NRA stickers too so they're staying.
