For me personally, if it was something I needed, I'd go up to $80 as I like them more than the brown Kennedy's.

It is something that I do not need....just something I want .....at the place I go to the resalers are usually after the furniture....tool box's "usually" go cheap....

I scored this 2 drawer top chest at the pir swapmeet for $15 including the tools inside! Had about 15lbs of American made tools including a few =v= tools! Wondering if anyone else has one of these ? It looks rough and the bottom has significant rust but I feel compelled to fix it but maybe not restore it ? It also is missing its key but it has lock #479if someone has an extra key ?

Hoping maybe someone can help me ID the model # for this crowntop socket set or at least know what all should be in the case... The blow-mold case just says, "3/8 Drive Metric Socket-Wrench Set" and has the Craftsman crowntop logo and "Permanex Case" below that. On the bottom it says, "Sears, Roebuck and Co. | Simpsons-Sears Ltd".

The sockets are -vv- & -v-, and it looks like the guy originally bought some extra smaller metric 3/8" & 1/4" drive sockets, along with an adapter (also all -vv- & -v-)...

The wrench in there was a newer RP (pictured top), which still had the barcode sticker on it so I'm guessing he exchanged it not too long ago (relatively). I'm thinking the -vv- ratchet (pictured bottom) should be what goes with the set. Though I know they also had those RHFT models around the same time?

Some things I would think are missing would be an extension (usually 3" is what in cases this size), maybe a spark plug socket? Possibly a universal? Flex-head breaker or a T-bar? I really don't know...

I know someone out there probably has one of these complete & original...

I purchased a similar set off of eBay awhile back. Mine included a quick-release ratchet (possibly the same - does yours have an oil port?), a 3" extension, a spark plug socket and a series of 12-point metric sockets (sizes 10mm to 18mm, if I remember correctly). The sockets were definitely all -V- series with the knurling on the detent end; I see the knurling is on the open end of the sockets in your set. My permanex case also had a live hinge instead of pin hinges.

I'm guessing the older of the two ratchets is original to that set. Probably not as definitive of an answer as you're looking for.

In the 1974 catalog it's a 21 piece set, 7 sockets from 9 to 15 mm, ratchet like your older one, 3 and 6 inch extension bars, universal, spark plug socket and a 8 piece hex key set (2-10) mm with pouch.

You da man! Just looked it up in the catalog. Now I'll have to see if I can find some of the missing parts in my various bins that I swore I would organize this past winter... lol.

lilcraigford - Yes it has the oil port. Looks like it matches the picture so I'm going with that. All the knurling is on the hex end.

EDIT - Just started reading the description, it says sizes 9 thru 15mm... This case has 11 thru 19mm, and they are sized to fit so it must be a slightly different model. I'll see if I can find older/newer catalogs on vintage machinery and go from there.

But still, Sears is pretty consistent in what they include. The usual spark plug socket, an extension or two, and a universal. I *might* have an old crowntop hex key set in pouch, not sure if it's SAE or Metric though.

Well, I looked through catalogs all through 68 - 81... Nothing exact...

I'll agree on mid-to-late 70's when metric was becoming more popular in vehicles, probably when Sears made sets with broader range of sizes...

The 12mm does have a Sears price sticker of $1.89 on it, maybe I can look up individual prices and better gauge that way, assuming he didn't have to warranty it too long after buying the set. Who knows...

Thanks for looking. I dunno, maybe it was part of a larger set? I saw those cases in some of the big sets, but they did look different...

It doesn't look right with 9-15mm... The 17mm & 19mm have little recesses in both the top & bottom to fit them perfect.

I'm going to try and find me a -v- extension or two, and maybe a universal and call the set good and put it on my shelf... lol.

Here is a sweet heart of a vise I picked up the other day at the swap meet! Original paint, 4” 05191 series vise which has seen little use. No damage and the joints are tight! It is not marked heritage but it is from the heritage era so I am placing it here. This is the stationary version and is very stout. I gladly gave $60 for it!

I've had BOTH of these boxes on my radar....for MANY years....

Searching craigslist regularly.......paid off.

Seller was good enough to deliver them yesterday...for the price of fuel...

It doesn't get much better for 50 year old tool boxes...

Uncle ED......did a great job of lining the drawers....and bottom of cabinet...with cardboard and carpet......also.. BOTH keys are present....

I'm STOKED......

We'll be detailing...and peeling stickers tomorrow....in the sun...

I got this bronze box in a job lot at an auction this weekend. It was essentially empty. It measures 9 1/8 high x 11 1/2 wide x 6 1/2 deep.
Inside the front area is 4 1/2 deep and the back compartment is about 1 3/4,
Does anyone have an idea what came in it? I’m thinking it may have been for a sander and the back compartment was for storing sheets of sandpaper.

What do the resident historians think?

I have the exact same box. It was my dad’s but I don’t know what came in it. He had it setup with a craftsman 3/8 hammer drill and a wide range of attachments. I gave it to to my Son-in-law in that configuration.

Must ‘a been a ‘60s thing.

Have a slightly larger one with a tray...that is a working 1/2" drive box...not pretty any more...but still very functional

Bought this cause it looked cool and thought it was complete, but it appears to be missing the wire kind of thing that actually holds the drill on.

I did find out this is the "fancy" version with the wire wheel guard and movable table.

I think I might be able to make the drill holder, it's just a steel rod with threaded ends shaped to fit over the handle of the drill.

What would be an age-appropriate Craftsman Crown power drill to go with it? I've got several old drills but non are Craftsman. Wonder if there is a Simpson-Sears power drill out there to match this thing?

I dug this beauty out of the barn today where it's sat for about 25 years. Fresh gas in the dry tank and it started on the 3rd pull.
Did some clean up and cut a little grass with it too. The catcher bag needs work but otherwise it's good.
