My recent redo... ~
Well done (abv ^).  That's a beautiful vise, Kirk.
Saw a couple of those 'Crowntop' toolboxes for sale lately. I think in the $25 ~$40 range. Hope much do they typ sell for?
And I should've specified that the ones on ebay were the sloped-top boxes.
Anyways, I put 3 'Crowntop' tool boxes out for one of our garage sales, I think for $10/ea (the typ 20" long x 9.5" tall; all had normal wear for being 35~40 yrs old; two w/red trays; one w/gray tray), and while lots of people stopped and browsed the gar sale, not only did no one buy one, but no one even made an offer !:~\ :headscrat

Uncovered this old 1/2 drive =V= ratchet in a "table of Craftsman tools" lot (mostly -V-) that I won in a "live" online auction. Curious where these fit in (I'll assume Snap-On made them) with similar vintage =V= ratchets with either flying V or "flying dogbone" selectors..... Was there a chronological lineage to these? or perhaps a regional distribution that ran concurrent to each other? Yes, it needs a good bath.......

Hello... those were made by western forge I believe, not snap on. Snapon only made c series drive tools for a short period in the 30’s.

Smoke,
Would that imply that Western Forge also contracted to Snap-On, because that ratchet cover plate, and selector are essentially identical to what Snap-On had on their 71N & 71M ratchets for a long time prior.

I guess I assumed that Snap-On had no problem making them for Craftsman (or licensing them?) since they themselves were closing that chapter of ratchet evolution anyway.

I'm having a helluva time posting since the "reboot" of the servers here. OOB: Your rat was made by Moore Drop Forging. 53-57 or thereabouts.

Found this with some random usa made old sockets, odds and ends. Happy enough to get the box! Drawers are all straight and work well, just missing locks. Will get a good cleanup and out into use.

Here's a 6516 box with a nice set of tools inside. Got it for $10 at a yard sale today. The man said he inherited it from his father-in-law and it has been in storage for the past 30 years. 20201010_162758.jpeg20201010_162808.jpg20201010_162917.jpeg20201010_162926.jpeg20201010_163330.jpeg20201010_163746~2.jpeg20201010_163917~2.jpg20201010_163940(0)~2.jpeg

Nice snag GalaxyRat!
Thanks, you guys. I was totally blown away he was selling it so cheap. He told me he had just donated some vintage pipe wrenches to a local thrift store (one Craftsman and one Ridgid). I might have to go sleuthing! He taught in Africa for a long time and kept most of his things in storage. Once he was back home, he never had any interest in the tools so he just wanted them to go to someone who would appreciate them.

I went back to the scrap yard today and pulled this out of the pile. It is unfortunate that in a matter of minutes, they smash whatever comes in into the rest of the pile with a huge excavator. Luckily, someone had just thrown this out of their truck and I stumbled upon it. It is a fun place to shop, where items cost $.50/lb. This weighs 28 lbs. so she charged me $14.

It was pretty dirty and had a bit of paint spray stuck to it, but I was able to rub most of that off with rubbing compound. I am happy with how it cleaned up. The ID tag has 1 61 stamped in it, which I assume to be the date of manufacture.

2.4 CFM at 35 psi is just a little guy, but it sure runs smooth and I like the design/styling.

Stumbled into this cute -V- Metric set w/Original tray and cardboard box (albeit tattered) Perhaps a testament to Craftsman plating and packaging, as everything else that was sitting in this garage was pretty corroded. These present more-or-less as new unused.

Found these two =V= 1/4 drive clutch head driver sockets while combing through an odd lot tool tray I picked recently. Curious if these are considered scarce. Haven’t come across them before or seen anything online. A 5/32 and 1/4.

I have an Apex clutch head driver with that type of drive but I’ve never seen an example of a screw that it fits. Maybe on some kind of electrical box?

I dismantled a bathroom in a single-wide mobile home (1969's?) once that had clutch head screws. My Sun 500 Distributor tester also has clutch head screws.

I've seen that style tip on screwdrivers and wondered what they were. I am familiar with the old style clutch head drivers/fasteners, but the new style is new to me.

clutch head screws.jpg

I have a GMC Value Van box truck that uses the old style to fasten the metal panels to the walls and ceiling.

My SUN 404 distributor tester has Phillips head screws. It's a newer model than the 500 though. (mine's a '73) EDIT-- I'll bet someone changed those screws. The rest of my SUN testers have clutch head screws.

I recently picked up a 3/8" drive CRAFTSMAN -V- socket that holds 1/4" drive tips and it keeps them in place with a set screw like the ones above.

I picked up this complete set of SAE deep sockets today. The set looks barely used with the exception of some of the minor wear on the smaller sockets.

When I was cleaning the box with simple green the red letter came off the crown sticker, sigh! I guess I could restore it with a paint pin but I’ll probably just leave it as is.

I'm supposing the "V" on this wrench would date it here, but the aesthetics of the wrench harken back to a Craftsman Vanadium inset style I've seen that I presume to be much older. Is this a 50s-60s wrench?

Here is my Dad's 6520 toolbox. He kept his wrenches on a pegboard, when he passed I gathered them up and placed them in his toolbox. Notice some socket sets still sealed in plastic bags. It has been sitting under my desk since 1999. He bought everything from Sears, tools, clothes, shoes, glasses, everything. I remember going to Sears with him as a child, back in the day when the only Sears in town was a 5 story building with wooden escalators and everyone dress up to go there, he would wear a suit and tie.

Found this #5 jack plane in a local consignment shop. It was used, but not much--its in really good shape, just needs a good cleaning. Made by Stanley and I believe it dates to between '69 & '74.
