Nice chalk line but this isn't a sales thread. If you look on the home page for the GJ forum, there's a Classified thread to conduct sales.

Um...hmmmm.....yea...

The chalk box is not for sale. I was simply making a note of the original price of $2.05 that was on the original box.

My 1958 Crown top. Please note spacer between motor mount and motor base. New cylinder capacitor would not fit, was about a quarter inch too proud. I made this 1/2 in spacer out of hardwood to avoid having to mount the capacitor on the outside of the motor.

Great job Hoorn. Lots of polishing compound I assume :)

Thanks! I bought that grinder in the condition you see it in, including the base and light, I was very lucky. It almost looks like it was used a few times and just put away for 55 years. The 150 drill press was a complete breakdown, including the motor, and paint job/polish.

That’s a nice box. It’s one of the mystery models that have cues from both Kennedy and Waterloo. The two spring loaded locking pins for the front cover as well as the top support look Kennedy and the dimples on either side of the lock tumbler are indicators of being manufactured by Waterloo. Mine just has the Waterloo dimples.

Definitely similar drawer pulls to Kennedy black vs brown.... I believe I've see the extra lid strengthener (I presume that is what it is) on Kennedys also...

I see that both the Waterloo and the Kennedy handles have the diamond on the plastic handle. I wonder if the handles were from the same supplier? Anyone know of a handle supplier that is associated with a diamond logo?

Too hard to turn down, just since I really never see any pop up. Stamp is in same spot as my gray/red 1971 box. I’m guessing this is a 1961 from April. Not sure what the next set of numbers are. I’m going to check that years catalog if I can find it.

I will assume that these Craftsman Professional chisels qualify as "crowntop" although truth be told, the handles remind just a bit of the older Amber handle screwdrivers. Found at a lunchtime blow-by at a garage sale where I barely slowed down other than to pay on the way out the door.

So I was told on another forum that my crown top box was only made for 1 year (1961). I don’t have the catalogs to verify that but I haven’t seen that style before I found mine (that logo but without drawer pulls) he had one as well in really great shape, and sent this from the ‘61 catalog

7" grinder with light. it looked unused when I got it, the grinding wheels were new. I've been using the coarse wheel, the fine one is still new. I also have the stand but it's mounted on a bench right now.

Found 2 of these on offer up. I took one to my buddy Rich’s garage to give him as a wall hanger.

I found this lightly used masonry bit in the original sleeve last Wednesday. It cleaned up pretty well.

Hello all,

Thought I would post my newly acquired -v- wrenches.

But first a wee backstory. The first picture shows 3 short DBE and 5 DOE. I bought these from Sears Canada in 1977 (maybe early 1978). Always enjoyed these and they were my go-to until 1990 when my wife bought me a set of Stanley combination wrenches. So these craftsman found their way into my box for the semi-retired, where they rest until called upon.

DBE
5/8 - 3/4 -v- 43862
1/2 - 9/16 -vv- 43861
3/8 - 7/16 -v- 43863

DOE
11/16 - /13/16 -vv- 44591
5/8 - 3/4 -v-44582
9/16 - 1/2 -v- 44579
3/8 - 7/16 -v- 44572
1/4 - 5/16 -vv- 44571

Enter 2021 I was thinking about my Craftsman and possible adding a few to complete the set, when I found the set of 7 below. Great seller, full of stories; I happily paid $20 and continued with my day.

They are all marked as: Forged in U.S.A. =v= [no product code] I read here that the absence of a product code places them as pre-1975, older than my original set. So made by Easco? Any way to tell if they are made by Moore?

Only 4 of the 16 sizes have been used (3/4, 1/2, 3/8, and 7/16) and light use at that. Nice set because it has the 25/32 and the 19/32 sizes.

About the 8th wrench pictured: it so happened I had the ratty 1/4 - 5/16 in my tool box and it carried the same marking: Forged in U.S.A -v-, so I added it to the set.

My original set is slightly shorter and the bar slightly wider when looking full on. The newly acquired set is a little more "streamlined", wider and the bar more slender.

Finally the last two pictures show the markings for the smaller sizes.

From what I've been reading, these seem to be treated differently (typically), so I've posted some closeups. The 1/4-5/16 on my original set has no - - before and after the Craftsman and there is no - - on the reverse either. The 1/4-5/16 I added to my new set has the single line before and after on both sides.

The 3/8-7/16 on my original set has = = before after Craftsman and no lines on the reverse. The same size of the new set has - -fore and aft on the front and -- on the reverse.

Thanks for looking,

Matthew

Easiest way I have found to tell is if the A is pointy or flat-topped. There were a few =V= with flat-topped As, but the majority have pointy ones. This has been covered before on other threads (beam differences, etc).

Oh this is helpful Cruzan, thank you. I did read miles of threads on these date codes, but missed this point. I just did a search on those terms and more popped up.

It seems flat-topped As were mostly a 70s thing.

The result:
My original set are all flat-topped As.
My new set are all pointy As, even the one I had on hand and added.

Can I conclude then that my Pointy As are pre70s? Which would point (pun intended) to Moore as the manufacturer, rather than Easco. Recognizing that Easco is still a possibility as they started manufacturing in 1968.

Probably as close as one can get dating these, would you agree?

Thank you for your help,

Matthew

My latest find, $12.50 looked like a perfect candidate for sand and restore...if it worked! With a frayed cable, i got it home and probably against good judgement i plugged it in and hooked up some leads i have for the omd forney, and works like a champ!! Now i can justify tear down, cleanup, new cord.

Going to post this on both the Crowntop and Heritage threads, as the date code is right in the transition period...

Anyone ever seen a motor labelled this before? Came on a private labelled Atlas metal lathe, made in 62 (both Timken bearings and bed date match). Thought it was interesting it was labelled as a Lathe motor, especially Sears brand, vs Craftsman. Looks very similar to the 1hp Crowntop hiding in the second pic. Same cradle, capacitor location, etc. This one has the badge where the Crowntop has a thermal reset button.IMG_20210323_181725.jpegIMG_20210323_182145.jpeg

I'm using this one on a little Delta 4" jointer. It's too new for this thread, but fits into the current conversation.

I've got my share of Craftsman tools and always pick them up at estate sales whenever they are fairly priced. Can't remember when I pick up these "Crowntop" Craftsman, but since this thread is all about showing them off, here they are.....

Cool! Made me go check my old set. They are Craftsman, but no CT logo. I’m not even sure how to date these guys. Maybe early 60s with that box around Sears?

The other way to tell is that until the -V- series of wrenches, they didn't put the model numbers on hand tools (AFAIK). Helps to establish a "no earlier than" date.

Sent from my IN2015 using The Garage Journal mobile app

Also, the “A”s in your Craftsman ratcheting wrenches are “flat topped” (vs. Pointy A). Given the discussion upthread a bit that would place them no earlier than the 70s.

If I’m getting all these indicators correct!
This + This + This = That. Unless it also has This, which makes it not That, but either This OR That, but only if the That is Roundish and not Angled, then it *could* be overlapped by 2-3 years. As far as we know . . .

Matthew

PS nice find on all the Sears logo images!
