Wow, you have quite a large monetary investment in brass valves and fittings on that thing. I am sure it works well though, and it will probably outlive all of us.

On the water tank? A lot less than you might think. I did replace ALL the galvanize pipe and fittings with brass, as you get a certain amount of rust. and at one time I had it all polished up shiny... I had some extra fittings in that pic as I was experimenting a bit with the setup. It's been simplified up top, and I've since added a small "tap" I'd picked up from an old coffee urn so I can fill a pot or cup quickly.

It evolves as I get different ideas for making it a more versatile setup. the second most favorite tweak is extending it tall and heating the water for hot showers in camp. (#1` is away having running water and usually warm as we will sit the tank next to the fire, or out in the sun to heat. It's hit 105 deg F in the sun alone on a sunny day)

Here is that one I have: made by Blitz well before they went under. Blitz used to supply the US Army & Marines with Jerry cans as well.

Here is a few in the collection, not really a collection because they will all have a purpose

In the last picture shows the 3 part numbers for making the spout which I have confirmed today that it does work without leaking. test eagle gas can is a 2.5 gallon model from the 80's or early 90's. The only thing it needs is the yellow flip tab that can be easily had on ebay just by searching fuel can parts or eagle can parts.

Its supposed to have a rubber button type grommit on the large cap but that can be substituted for a yellow flip tab or a draincock from an air compressor once you tap it to fit.

either way this old 2.5 gallon eagle fuel can pours faster then any safety 1 gallon can

Resurrecting some old pics (pre GJ for me...)

My solution to the PITA stopping to dump a Jerry can of gas into the tank is:

First, mounting space on a Samurai is limited, (very limited 10.4 gallon tank, too...)

And to clear the swinging tailgate, I made a mounting post off the bumper I built for it.

From that mounting post I can swing the Jerry can out of the way.

I plumbed that Jerry can with three connections:

  1. A tube going to the bottom of the Jerry can (I actually dented the bottom a bit in that spot...),
  2. a connection leaving about 1-1/2 gals in the jerry tank,
  3. A tube to the top of the Jerry connected to the tank vent system of the rig.

the were plumbed though fuel hoses to the hinge tube, and under the bumper. You can just see one of the hoses

This piece is rectangular tubing protecting the hosed where the connect to the Jerry tank's connections the Jerry tank holder is off a Korean war vintage M37 weapons carrier (12 ga. material) and I cut a corresponding hole in the holder to provide access for the hoses (stringing those hoses was fun...):

The vent line is a home run to the vent system. The two main fuel lines go to a two way valve so I can select which one in in use. I usually left it in the "leave a reserve" position so I always had some gas left. that line went to and electric fuel pump then to another 3 way valve:

One went to the tank fill neck and was the "Normal" position, one went all the way to the engine compartment with enough to connect to the carb and was caped and ready for emergency use. The last on was fitted with a slip on hose connection and was capped. I carried about 6 ft of hose (also capped) so I could give someone else fuel if needed, of fuel my trail bike.

I could flip a switch on the road, and dump 3-4 gallons of gas in the main tank, and never let up on the throttle! :rocker:

Looks like a 3 gal (IIR) I have several smaller tanks; that looks like one of them.

I second the vote for more pics of the rig. In fact I've been thinking we need a "lets go rough camping" thread. maybe in Free Parking? Anyone else interested?

That is a really nice trailer, I can see quite a few DIY features. Do you happen to have any other close-up pictures? I always like seeing what other people come up with for camping. Also, what size propane tank is that? I have never seen a refillable tank that small. It must be a 5lb tank?

I have more photos... But don't want to steer the thread off topic.

Not sure really. Have a few from a shop. That one is about 3'x5' with a list and I have a battery one too that is smaller. Found a few old grease guns and oil can holders and such too.

Came across this blog post about gas cans a while back. Didn't know there were people as serious about gas cans as I was until I read this. Article is about the UK maker Wavian and their NATO spec gas cans.
