Found this in an auction box. They don't have much value but it looks kind of cool. Seems like it would be kind of awkward to sand that way.

Hey Nines, hey Smoke, hey All!

I picked up this 99C04387 wall cabinet for mechanics' tools today at my flea market. Although many of the tools in the 1948 catalog bear the =CRAFTSMAN= Heritage logo, it's not in the 1948 catalog. It's on the cover and then again on page 3 of the 1952 catalog, so it must've been introduced sometime between 1948 and 1952.

Here is what it looked like when I got it (See Pic 1).

Ironically, nothing in the cabinet was Craftsman, and only one piece was even Sears & Roebuck! (See Pic 2).

The only pcs that came with it that I cam keeping are this "Samson" PEXTO breast drill, the no-name flexible Phillips screwdriver, the North Brothers "YANKEE" "BELL SYSTEM" spiraling driver, and the woodruff keys. EDIT: Also the auger bits - found in one of the nifty little swinging drawers at the bottom - and these tiny nippers (which needs to be de-rusted)!

Here are some close-ups of the profiles showing what tools should go where...

Lugz, that cabinet is a great find and I agree, those swinging drawers are pretty cool.
I wonder why they didn't put a Craftsman badge on the outside?

Thanks, guys!

I wonder why they didn't put a Craftsman badge on the outside?
Good question, Jay. Since I had never seen one of these cabinets before, because it's not centered, and because the cabinet has some improvisational holes drilled in it, I was actually wondering if it was factory or something else, until I got home and verified it. All the catalogs show the badge on the inside exactly where it's located. The woodworkers' tools version is also on the inside, though that one is centered.

What amazes me is I have tools with at least 3 different kinds of the heritage logo.
Interesting! Thanks for the prompt, honza! I was so absorbed in the cabinet itself that I didn't even take notice to that.

I just inspected the random pieces I own that have a metal =CRAFTSMAN= Heritage era badge (a general toolbox, a carpenter's toolbox, and a 1/2-inch drive socket set attache style case), and they all look the same as each other and the badge on this cabinet, except for the bottom of the badge. The others read, "REGISTERED U.S. PAT. OFF." (Trademark registered with the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office) there.

That sent me to the catalogs. All of the badges that are large and clearly legible in the 1948, 1952, and 1954 catalogs read, "REGISTERED U.S. PAT. OFF."

My intuition tells me that "MADE IN U.S.A." with a little (R) symbol, indicating that the =CRAFTSMAN= trademark has been registered with the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office, comes later. So perhaps my cabinet is late 50's. The latest catalog I have access to is 1954. I will have to seek out some late 50's editions.

(Oddly, that symbol was first established by the USPTO in 1946, and is often used by collectors in-the-know to help date collectibles that otherwise defy dating, but Sears & Roebuck was obviously late to adopt it, since all the Heritage area logos come after 1947.)

What is the third kind of Heritage era =CRAFTSMAN= badge variant you have seen?

EDIT: I am not a ********* Craftsman collector to begin with, believe it or not, and of the things I have collected, most are Long C era, so I am definitely probing around in the dark here in the =CRAFTSMAN= Heritage era. If someone has the Heritage era badge variants identified and sorted out in sequence, please provide the info or a link to the info!

Thanks, guys!

I love when an old box has some character to it.
Yup. I like clean, mint-y NOS boxes, too, but they always present a dilemma - finding clean, mint-y NOS tools to match! :) This is a big debate in the WWII community that extends even to the vehicles and whether to restore or preserve 'as is'. Tools and other accessories hung on jeeps are almost always well-used looking, whereas the jeep looks like it just rolled off the assembly line. Same dilemma with civilian tool-sets, boxes and tools. For me, anyway. Which is one of the advantages of the 'been there, done that' look.

The real question is, are you planning on filling it?
Funny you should ask, Dan. Yesterday I would've said absolutely not, mainly because I have no interest in =V= tools. But, as I was cleaning it up this morning (Simple Green spray on the grime, WD-40 and 0000 steel wool on the rusty spots - mainly on the hanging clips and such), and looking at the profiles, I realized that I probably have close to ten (10) of the ninety (90) pieces without even trying (the hacksaw, the 1 lb hammer, some of the 1/4-inch drive pieces, and a few others), and I pass up =V= 1/2-inch drive, DOE, and DBE wrenches all the time at flea markets. It probably wouldn't be a herculean effort. And that catalog image of it full does look pretty cool! On the other hand, do I really want to invest the time and effort in something outside my niche? So I am at, Hmm, maybe, I don't know. :)

Ironically, the former owner had a bunch of cylinder locks in the cabinet, and some of them even had keys. But they don't fit. Shouldn't be too hard to find one that does, even though it won't be period correct.

Do it! You can't just have an empty cabinet. I've got some extra =v= you can have.

I made a little progress in the research department.

There is a wall cabinet in the 1957 catalog, but it has a different layout and a different part number (99C04363L). See pic 1.

That means that my cabinet is earlier than 1957. And, if I am right about the =CRAFTSMAN= badges with the USPTO registered trademark symbol "(R)" and the "MADE IN U.S.A." being later than the =CRAFTSMAN= badges with the "REGISTERED U.S. PAT. OFF.", my cabinet was made between 1954 and 1957.

Well I’ve recently come to enjoy and seek the heritage stuff. Recent finds include toolboxes and a sharpening stone and a roller and a sander. IMG_6525.jpgIMG_6526.jpgIMG_6374.jpgIMG_6381.jpg

Lugz,
That is a great chest. If you decide to fill it, I have some =v= stuff that would otherwise be destined for eBay that I would be happy to donate to such a worthy cause. I did find this little 4 drawer cabinet at a yard sale up the street from our house yesterday.

Jay, your 3 drawer roller looks very clean! Do you have any better pictures ?

Thank you Smoke; I don’t yet but once I pull it for its refurbishment I will post good images! I have a stuck drawer that will require some ingenuity. Other projects line up ahead of that. It’s not super accessible at the moment.

What kind of refurbishment does it needs ? Looks like it needs a light cleaning and then lube the slides? Paint looks way to clean to repaint !

I was able to get one of my unicorn pieces from rileysan, this 8 drawer roller. I also got this 6 drawer top chest. Both need a repaint but the slides are nice and straight and no rust! The 8 drawer is dated 1955 and the 6 drawer has no date on it. Wondering if anyone has the correct badge for the drawer that is missing? Also wondering what color is correct for 1955? I checked the catalog and it is listed as machinery grey. It it the hammered color like jays 3 drawer shown above or is it the battleship grey from the 40’s ?

The smaller of the two '46 center lock domes. This one was way past the patina stage and got the full spa treatment.

I picked up these earlier this year along with a couple of old toolboxes. Don't know exactly what these are called but suspect they're for sheet metal work.

Yes, those are auto body dollies. Not used, FYI... their only markings where the stickers and those are right where you would place them behind a panel. 99% of them have their stickers rubbed off and can’t be identified
