My ‘52 saw case isn’t overpainted either.

Actually, Don, I didn't realize those cases were that far post-war. On an unrelated note, you either have unbelievable ready access & organization to your massive tool cache, or an equally impressive file catalog on your computer. I'm jealous on both fronts!

Thanks, there are some tool pictures in my iPad.

July 1947 reedsman 5187. (Reed 204-1/2). Also interesting is the greenish-grey under the badge instead of the dark blues used on the underline logos

I don't believe that color under that badge is original. Looks like badge was reattached at some point with some adhesive. The 5187 I did recently was gray under the badge.

It is grey. It’s the same Grey the original Wilton’s had that had a greenish hue to them. That was sawdust under the badge.

I’m still trying to find the bottom half of this tool box... it’s been nearly impossible. IMG_3356.jpg

That is a very unique logo/ drawer configuration! It is an early heritage logo but the chest configuration looks long c! I believe someone on here picked up a roller with that logo not too long ago but I think it had newer handles? Hopefully that member will respond? At any rate, can you post more pictures?!

Darn. Different handles. Can I send you my address anyway for proper disposal of that ugly green box? :D

Square corners, no ribbing on the front cover, early style side handles....essentially a leftover prewar/wartime box that was painted gray and adorned with the Heritage badge. The predominately blue badge is a bit of a mystery. They pop up now and then. My theory is that Sears was experimenting with what they wanted in their post war logo. I missed out on a blue badge bottom chest a couple of years ago at a flea. As I spotted it, a guy was trading a beat up weed whacker for it.

Ouch. I have had this top chest lingering in the back of the shop for awhile.

Thanks joco. I have been meaning to clean it up and put it by the drill press for bits and such. I have a 2 drawer at home that may be better for that.

Tool_Master: I picked up a complete set a couple months ago. I had never seen the blue logo before. I’m pretty certain this was purchased as a set and should stay together. I can see where finding a matching bottom will be difficult for sure.
My top has the ribbed door cover which is newer style then your plain flat front. It does have the early two handle drawers though. It seems like Sears was doing a bit of mix and matching around the war time.

DaveT, I agree your CM stack is awesome! Thank you for sharing, I certainly keep my eyes peeled for anything that at least closely resembles.

Have an agreement to venture off after work tonight to grab this old carry box. I'm curious as this shows a leather handle if this might be newer or older than some of the near identical boxes that feature the embossed oval/stripes around the Heritage badge.

I believe this is newer than the embossed ones. This one looks like it would clean up well with just some simple soap and water! Does it have the tray?

Leather handle IMO dates it to late 30s-early 40s. This based on what i see in the catalogs.

Thanks all. Looks for all the world an SK made box (or same OEM vendor to both?). Principal difference though is the tray doesnt match the finish of the box itself as an SK typically does. Somewhat crappy pics as I didn’t let it dry all the way after quickie cleanup and it certainly could benefit from a WD40 wipe down as well to bring up the color.

Looks great oob, congrats. Sears sold a similar box with their 3/4d set that was the exact box sold by SK. I believe rileysan has one. Key difference is the manner of supporting the tray. The SK box had four separate supports, one in each corner, for supporting the tray. I've been scouring high and low for one of those with no luck.

The box looks very similar but the S-K trays have round handles. The last picture shows the corner tray supports.

Thanks Ben. I'm on a learning curve with vises. Used them all my life but have never torn one down or adjusted one (I think I probably cracked one or two as a youngster). I plan on disassembling this one, clean it up well, do a bit of polishing on the bare metal then see if I can get it back together and adjusted correctly. Looking forward to it.

There isn’t much to them. I have one of these-3-1/2 inch that is my user. Mine is about 50% original paint and has had some touch up paint on the dynamic jaw. Are you going to use this one or is it for the store display?

I'm going to replace the 5198 on the primary end of my workbench with this one. The 98 is much more vise than I need on a daily basis. It'll go on the far end of the bench for the very rare times I need something with that much capacity.

Well, since you won't be using the 5198 anymore, you should sell it to me :)

I've actually thought about doing just that Ed but I know the day would come when I'd regret it and I doubt I'd get a second shot at one.

That’s a beautiful vise JoCo. I have been looking for probably a year now and have not seen one pop up near me. Nice find!

Thanks Dave. Two actually popped up within reach of me at the same time. The other one was closer but it was the later version with CRAFTSMAN cast into the body. I opted for the Heritage logo. It's taking every ounce of resolve I have not to go snag that other one as well.
