Sears stuff can be confusing. All looks similar but the details on the tools can date them.

Circle V with pointed A's on the craftsman logo appeared on nut drivers into the 1980s.

I've seen very few of those all red Heritage badges pop up but have no clue what the deal is with them. I recently passed on a pre-49 roller that had an all red badge. The box was just too trashed to be of interest. I'd say the all red ones fall into the same WTF category as the reverse color ones. Nice find.

joco,

Thanks! I was just going to replace it with a decal. Now I think I'll try to refresh it. It's a shame that the right side of it is very nice under some kind of sealant but the left quarter is almost bare metal.

I finished up the 5176. I thought for a few minutes that I had acquired on of each type of heritage vise until I went through Outlaws thread. There are some rare specimens on the last page! I guess I'll keep hunting.

The whole RI series 5160-5168 (at least 5166) wore heritage badges in the 1950s.

There are collectors of vises who have devoted their collection entirely to the Craftsman vises. Not sure who they are, but have heard they are out there.......

Thank you JoCo.

Here are pics of the hardware mount. It's held in place by four set screws that clamp onto the upper headframe column brace.
The rod is held in place with a set screw/spring/ball detent. There is a snap ring on the bottom of the rod.

A E Numan, thanks.
It can be raised for belt changes too. Snaps into place solidly.

Such a rare accessory. So cool! Was it you who asked about a drill press with the cover on the craftsman face book page ? It was me who said "don't walk, run to buy it " :)
Not me. The moment I saw it I recognized what it was and contacted the PO. I knew what it was solely because of FrankLee's Craftsman drill press thread -of course he has one! It took 3 days to pick it up because of the PO's schedule. But the day/time he said he was ready, I was out the house in 5 minutes.

Great find Hoorn. I don't know what the OP of the pics of that on the other site was waiting on. Way out of reach for me to buy from the seller, I went as far as PMing the OP who asked what it was and offered to pay the asking price of the entire machine for just the pulley cover and associated hardware if he'd just go pick it up. He could have had a free drill press for mailing me the cover assembly. Glad you jumped on that thing. Hesitation doesn't yield good results when a rarity pops up.

I had posted this sander a page or two earlier in this thread, but here it is with the era correct 1952 motor finally done. I put new bearings in it and thoroughly cleaned the copper and terminal contacts. Runs silky smooth.

Nice work, Hoorn!!

Here is a wrench I picked up a few days ago. Besides the PO's initials (EF) there are no other marks, forged or stamped, to indicate the manufacturer. This looks like the classic Moore Drop Forge wrench, but no =v=. Alloy Artifacts has a =Craftsman= combo without a maker's mark but with the size on the raised panel and they are silent on possible forging dates.

Can anyone tell me if this might be a prototype or is it just something that's out there but I've never noticed before?

I don’t know who made them for sure, but I have found a bunch of them!

The wrenches that where posted prior to yours are Miller Drop Forge I belive.. But dont quote me

That was my wrench, Smoke. I'm not familiar with Miller Drop Forge--did you mean Moore? If so, we're in agreement, but I'm wondering about the why and when. Was it forged as a prototype (by Moore or someone else) before the V was assigned? If not that, why would the V not be included?

Test. There is something weird going on with this thread. OR's post made this thread the most recent activity in the Vintage Discussion forum, but it didn't show up at the top of the forum. It's not showing up in my Watched list, either.

Yes. Hitting "Forums" and scrolling down to Vintage Discussion it's there. Clicking Vintage, it's at the top. It also shows on my watch list.

I see your post there. That's as it should be, no?

Crosspost from the vintage toolbox thread:
Oof. I just can't help myself sometimes.
I found this Craftsman stack on marketplace last Thursday. I procrastinated in sending a message because I need to build a pole barn before I buy more boxes!
It kept nagging at me and I messaged them on Saturday. I was told at that time that the sale was 'pending' to another person.
I looked again last night and it was still listed. I sent another message today...
A short trip and $35 later. Should mate well with the Craftsman 2D top box that I have in the basement.

Nice roller UNAIU.

Don, I agree with bmwr on those clamshells, very late war time/immediate post-war. Nothing surprises me coming out of that era as it seems to have been a drunken free for all at Sears. I found a Circle U midget set in the wild that was in that same clamshell. The 49 catalog shows a tool set that has both NB and MDF components in it.
