I don't think anyone is still riveting brake shoes!

The last vehicle I had with drum brakes was my wife's POS '09 Chevrolet Aveo. The bonded shoes failed one day (the bonding just released) and dropped the pad into the bottom of the drum locking up the whole hub. Had to pull it all apart on the side of the road and drive home with no rear-passenger brakes.

I've never had a brake lining fail like that, and every vehicle I've ever owned had drums (at least on the rear.)
And
Of all of the different items we sold, bonded brake shoes (always reman, never new) were one of those items with an almost non-existent warranty return rate.
YMMV

I still see them on the road, so I guess they weren’t total junk, but this one gave me tons of problems. It overheated in downtown Chicago because the spring clamp sliced a tear in the lower radiator hose while driving down the tollway. Wife didn’t notice in time and it warped the head. I meticulously maintain my vehicles so this one was like a personal affront from all the failures.

I will admit that it’s rare for the lining to come loose from the shoes but when I got my WW2 Jeep from my brother one of the first things I checked was the brakes. Upon removal of the first brake drum, the lining from one of the shoes fell out of the drum onto the ground, much to my surprise.

With the addition of the above sockets, I’m getting to have a pretty complete set of Super 1/4” drive sockets. Hopefully I will eventually complete a correct Super set.

Here’s the stuff from the auction today, one of every flavor lol. There’s a Wizard, Westcraft, Powr-Kraft and an Indestro Select. I think this wrench may be an Indestro based on the “select” on it.

I'll raise you 1/4". I have no idea why I have this 3/4" drive D-I 1 11/16". I don't have a ratchet for it of any brand. Too bad the owner had to initial it right by the mfr. markings. Otherwise, nice paperweight.

Does anyone know about this unmarked Duro ratchet? It looks like a 3202 but there are differences on the handle. It doesn't have that forge mark at the top of the handle under the head. The only mark is the oil & patent number. It is also 16 teeth. I don't know if this is any clue but the patent # & oil mark is on top when holding it to tighten. All my other Duro's the patent & oil mark is on bottom when holding to tighten. I pictured it next to a 678D for reference. Any ideas??

I believe that unmarked ratchet is an Indestro non-reversing ratchet. Probably pretty early. In catalogs they were selling reversing and non-reversing at the same time. Duro ratchets are generally marked on the handle but Indestro generally aren’t. It is interesting that yours is missing the bump on the handle since all of mine have it, even the one missing the 3202. Maybe Four_cycle can shed some light on your ratchet if he’s feeling better.

I know you can't always go by the drawings but I noticed on the patent drawing the ratchet doesn't have the bump on the handle. Maybe the earliest versions didn't have this? Who knows. I'll be interested to find out if anyone else has a 16 tooth version.

This might be a question for four cycle. I ran across this info on AA. If Duro & Indestro didn't officially join forces until 1933, maybe this unmarked 16 tooth ratchet with no bump on the handle was Indestro's version before they joined forces in 1933?

Figured it out. It's an Indestro model no. 3111. Pics attached. I'm curious though, if Duro & Indestro officially joined forces in 1933, why did both of them continue to make separate ratchet models that were so similar in design & construction?

I couldn’t find my totally unmarked one but all of the others are 18 tooth. IMG_8935.jpeg
I believe that they kept the two entities separate to gain market share. The jobber that four_cycle worked for was an Indestro dealer. Other jobbers might have been Duro-Chrome dealers. They kind of relaxed that policy during WW2 and Indestro tools are often seen in Duro marked boxes.

Keeping separate to gain market share makes complete sense. Thanks for checking yours out. I have one other Indestro ratchet that I'm looking for info on. I haven't been able to find out much on this handle design. It doesn't have the bump (notch) on the top of the handle but it's not smooth either. Kind of raised a little. It's probably definitely Indestro since it's not marked. But have you ever seen a handle like this one??

I have some Wards handles but they all look like this one (pic attached). There are different Wards variants?

Only like early 30s ratchets had that handle. The sockets sometimes were stamped wards riverside, sometimes wards chromium vanadium.

Good to know. Nice collection by the way. I have a few Wards ratchets that are completely unmarked, not even stamped with a patent or oil mark. Is this uncommon?

Nope and I am not even sure wards was the only seller. Chromium vanadium was used by wards, western auto and I don't know who else

I've been wanting to buy an old Duro socket set for a while. I finally bought one. Maybe you guys can help me understand more about it. The original box says Duro Metal Products Co. I'm assuming this was before Duro & Indestro joined up in 1933. I noticed the Duro insignia is not a sticker, it's stamped into the metal on the box. Also, all the sockets are marked with the D trapezoid markings. The 672 ratchet & t-handle is marked patent pending. AA says the date on the 672 ratchet is 1928-1930. Could this set be from the late 1920's?? What is the best way to determine if it's an early socket set??
