It would have to be something like that, because it's not marked Sears or Craftsman anywhere. 1930's makes sense with the hex drive and the economy line cadmium plating. The CROSS COUNTRY branding is really neat. If it was local at my flea I would buy it. I am loathe to pay the shipping on top of the purchase price even if it stays low. I don't like it quite that much.

Looks like that one matches the color scheme of the cross country set. Was cross country sold by sears as seller claims? I have a couple odd tools, just thought maybe a duro/indestro sub brand.
Looking through contents in ITCL, Sears comes up with Cross Country in the 1922 -23 catalogs, but only for oil products so far. Claims it is their trademark. But no socket sets found from any manufacturer (in ITCL, where catalogs are text searchable)

Hey gang, here is a fun find from last weekend. Found it at a junk emporium, antiques, tools both old and newer, plants, always a favorite place to shop.

It's a set of Indestro Right Angle offset screwdrivers, in varying sizes. Seen in the 1954 - 70 catalogs at ITCL, they were offered loose and as a set of 5 with a KlipTite bracket, as seen below (4770-5k) I didn't get the bracket, but may try to fab something, as it looks quite handy for organization. My set has a 4771A, 4771-4774. Was disappointed to see them in the Tools you always had but never used thread over on the other side. I have 10 or more of them, and only use one 1-2x per year, but lifesavers when I need one.

Every doorknob in my house is shaped to prevent me from using a regular screwdriver on the screws affixing them to the door. When they get loose, which they are not only wont but seemingly happy to do, I can only tighten them up with an offset screwdriver.

Nice find!

Someone never uses offset screwdrivers? They are one of those things that, if you need one, there's nothing else.

Grabbed this at the flea this morning with a bunch of other catalogs. 1968. Covers settings for tractors, trucks, and cars from Allis Chalmers to Yamaha, and Buick "Dynaflow" to Studebaker "Flightomatic", from the 1940's to 1967.

Cross country set arrived today... tools unmarked other than sizes and chrome vanadium. Breaker bar has eagle patent lawsuit head on it.

They did actually have part numbers for those sockets, which could be ordered individually from Indestro.
(The 1935 catalog is available for download at ITCL.) This one looks somewhat familiar:

That hex drive set is a beaut! The more I collect tools, the greater my appreciation of Duro/Indestro gets.
I passed on a few Duro tools and sets of tools on Craig's list. Then I got that little 3/8 metric ratchet set that I posed a while ago in this thread. I now regret passing on those. The set is just really nice. It's a shame they are gone.

Here are a couple of similar Duro 1/4” drive sets I’m currently working on. One set is all Duro marked tools. The other has D-I marked sockets. I have some D-I sockets on the way to fill out that set. I added a generic handle to the spinner shaft that the original handle had rotted off of.

The Duro marked partial set is below.

Dang, I previously figured out a search at archive.org that searched for “cross country” and Sears catalog, and now I can’t repeat it. Didn’t pay attention if 1933 was there then.

That’s why I’m throwing AA under the bus.
Where they belong!

How much better would AA be if they had their catalog library scanned and freely accessible, if they accepted references they don't have in their library, and if they added a little forum section where their suppositions and conclusions could be openly discussed, vetted by peers, and improved through collaboration?

Oh, wait. That's GJ w/Sticky + IA/ITCL!

Wait, AA does tool addiction too?

Hi,I'm Mallen. It's been 3 days since my last tool purchase. It's been a tough couple of days. I fell off the wagon over the weekend. I mean literally. The wheel broke and I fell off. I went to the hardware store to get a new wheel. There was a wrench on the wagon that could have been used to put it on, but they had a nice looking set on sale so I bought it. It was a BOGO actually so I bought two. That was all it took to send me off on a bender all weekend. I bought a couple of toolboxes to keep them in and some screw drivers and a couple of hammers. I spent the rent money. When I did what I never thought I ever would. I sank to a new low. I stole my brother's tv and stereo and pawned them for tool money. That wasn't the new low actually, I've done that before. But this time was worse. I took the money and I went to harbor freight. I'm so ashamed of my self. My 3 year old found me in the garage ,passed out, face down in a puddle of motor oil with cheap Chinese tools strewn everywhere. My wife wasn't even angry at me this time. She just looked disappointed, calmly asked if the car was even drivable, then called an Uber and took the baby to her sister's.

recent acquisitions - still trying to complete sets of these Indestro 10° offset and 45° offset double-end box wrenches, which is turning into something of a challenge due to multiple changes in design over the years.

Indestro Super 711 3/8" x 7/16" 10° offset double-end box wrench (6-point) raised panel, hex shank *

Indestro Super 711 3/8" x 7/16" 10° offset double-end box wrench (12-point) raised panel, hex shank *

Indestro Super 712 1/2" x 9/16" 10° offset double-end box wrench (12-point) raised panel, hex shank

Indestro Super 732C 11/16" x 13/16" 45° offset double-end box wrench (12 point) raised panel, hex shank

* note the change from 6-point to 12-point on the 711 3/8" x 7/16" 10° offset wrench. I'll have to pore through some catalogs to see if I can figure out some kind of date range, but I'm not overly optimistic about finding answers.

member 3baygarage graciously donated these little gems to the Indestro collection here:
Indestro alligator wrench from 131 'Handy' 3-pc ignition wrench set.jpg
Indestro 1/2" open end x alligator wrench from Indestro model 131 "Handy" 3-piece ignition wrench set
Indestro 131 3-pc 'Handy' Ignition Wrench Set - 1935 Indestro catalog pp 41.jpg
The alligator wrench (and the other two in the set) were not available as separate items - they came only in the 131 set.
For reasons which defy explanation, the "alligator" wrenches have survived the ravages of time and are still found in the second-hand market, many of which are not marked with the maker's name presumably because they were sold through any number of Indestro's private label accounts. Even without the name, they're fairly unmistakable.

This Duro table saw has been posted on the local Craigslist for over three weeks. At $30.00 with wheeled stand and 3/4 HP motor, it's pretty cheap. The table looks solid, with minor rust, and it has the fence, but no miter head or blade. Can't tell the size of the blade from the photos.

Somebody should save it. I already have a table saw.

Not me. I already have six table saws. It's a cute one though.

I came across another little magneto wrench, like my favorite one in the set I found a week or so ago (but without the hole in the middle). I enjoy working on Bosch distributors and am a fan of Charles Kettering (of Delco fame).
