I finally got around to looking at a large batch of chisels and punches that my wife found at an estate sale while I was looking at other tools. They are all marked BC which were made by Vlchek between 1935 and 1941, according to lauver's chart.

Found this in an old Craftsman toolbox after removing the bottom drawer

A Big thank you to Ryan! Today I get home from work and I have two packages; one from Ryan!

He sent me the paperwork above, as well as a pair of Long C electricians pliers! Also marked Vanadium and has Circle C forged into the inside tip of the handles.

Vanadium indicates Hinsdale or possibly Billings, but the notes on Circle C claim Crescent or Chanellock. - did EITHER of these tow ever do Vanadium steel? Need to do some research... (I think I did this a while back in this thread... maybe I need to do a search...)

I have the Dunlap version of the tool shown in Ryan's post.

The tool has a copyright date of 1937,
038.jpg
but they did not have the plastic sleeves back then, did they? Suppose this is a later release of an earlier design?

I learned on this forum that Dunlap was a cheaper line offered by Sears. I wonder what makes the Craftsman version better in this case. Perhaps the other got a stainless pivot pin?

Here are some long C battery terminal pliers I came across in the shop.

Some Craftsman and Dunalp (or other secondary brand) are identical. The difference (besides price) is the lifetime warranty...

Any (circle?) letter stamps in that battery plier?

I wish this site had little 'icons' like the other site I use... where I could click on "thanks", or "like" or something. I'll say it the old fashioned way...

Thank you.

My PC suffered a life-ending injury during my move, so I'm stuck using my phone to upload photos and comments.

I have slowly been loading my late-40s long-c roller (acquired through the good graces of BMWRD0) with long-c goodness, and I'm almost out of room!

I hope to find a matching top chest at the big Portland swap meet in April. Else, I'm going to need to put my long-c tools elsewhere.

The last photo is combined long-c (BE & circle-H) and plomb-made circle-U sets.

All: sockets and old Craftsman ratchet.

Drives: That is the set my dad had, minus the tool box. Think he picked it up in the late 20's early 30's at a pawn shop in downtown Los Angeles. I remember vividly busting my knuckles when useing the ratchet. It was worn and would often disengage and slip...WHAM!
Right after I started college and had a steady part time job(key word is "steady") (1964), I bought my dad a new Craftsman 1/2" drive ratchet, with extensions. When he opened the package he went right out to the garage and tossed the old ratchet. At age 18 I was glad to see it go, now I wish I still had it, but I still have all the sockets and other pieces.
Thanks for posting. Was that set made by S-K for Craftsman?

Someone can correct me, But that looks homemade. I have a Long C 1/2HP grinder, and it looks nothing like that. This is what mine looks like:

The motor/grinder shaft is one solid bar, and is 1:1 rotation to the motor (its also the armature shaft), so its on or off both sides with one switch. The second switch is for reversing the rotation, which was discussed. (but possibly in a different thread)

Are the switches for each side? That would be nice, but I suppose one is really for the worklight?
I thought about that, that would be great, but as stated by outlaw, the left switch strictly is the on and off switch, while the right switch controls forward and reverse. Motor was built early 40's late 30's

Honestly its wishful thinking, I know how an electric motor works, but the thought of having independent control (left/right) kinda carried me away. Note to self: ENGAGE MIND BEFORE MOUTH (or fingers in this case).

It's cool man, lol. I kinda wish I knew how to wire so I could add that feature myself, because that would be an awesome feature

As far as I know, it would require two separate simple motors, or maybe some slightly more complicated integrated design that I am not aware of. But not with a regular motor like we see here. Lol. But Im not an electrician...

Quick question, has anybody found a good spraypaint match for the old Long C shop equipment and motors? I was using Krylon Royal Blue, but that is a bit too bold, if you know what I mean, and I am searching for something better.

JakeMac gets credit as this was from my notes on the old blue for Long C

the blue that they used in the late 30's and pre-war 40's, - the closest rattle can I've found is Valspar #85205 Classic Royal Blue. Jakemac

Found some long c today. I've seen pics and some info on the companion saw but I don't know anything about the two motors and grinder. The grinder does not have a model number plate that I can find. Probably stamped somewhere.

Just got these home so this is as found. I did get the fence for the saw so that is nice.

Looks like somebody cut out some of the back of the grinder for belt clearance. I see the bottom edge of a logo and most likely above that is where the model plate was located.

Got the grinder all apart except for the shaft/pulley. Not sure how to extract it without damaging anything. Its the only way to put a belt on so there must be a way.

Hey that looks just like the motor I just got. Too bad it wasn't a complete grinder like yours but at least they kept the plate and switches.

Set of pin punches I picked up at an auction recently. Original pouch to boot! Logo is very faded, but visible at the right angle. Guy liked to paint his stuff green unfortunately. These are small punches, ranging from 1/8” down to 1/32”. They obviously weren’t used much as they are all straight. Where they aren’t stained, the finish is is very bright still.

Mint: just an FYI. that Long C vise made by REED might be missing it's shelf under the dynamic jaw in front. I emailed him maybe a month ago asking for more pictures and didn't get a response so guessing he might know it's missing. BEE CAREFUL if you are thinking of buying it if he lowers his price.

ALL: while i do like Reed vises a lot and the long C craftsmans made by Reed I really like the Craftsman vises made by Rock Island a bit more. I also think Rock Island made the Craftsman 519x's after WWII which might be maybe my favorite vises in the 50 to 100 pound range.

Thanks for the warning, Drives. I am not in the market for another vise. I was just sharing for the fun of it.

Luckily, vises are not one of my vices. I try to steer those towards smaller/cheaper items.

I just got this little BE 1/4" set put together, but I'm thinking the little box came with a breaker bar rather than the ratchet. True?

I picked up this Craftsman tap & die set at the flea this morning. It's another example of a mixed logo product. The decal on the top of the lid is classic blue Long C. The decal under the lid is a red and rather plain, prosaic, even generic looking logo, in quotes no less. And the markings on the pieces themselves are just as plain. Not Long C, not geometric, and not =CRAFTSMAN= era either. There is precedence for it with all the older late 30's BE and (H) socket set tools that show up with a plain logo (no Long C, no geometric letters) on the tools but a Long C decal on the box.

So pristine that as I started inspecting every single piece to make sure it was all there and all Craftsman, I was thinking it was going to be impossible to find something to haggle him down on. Lo and behold, I discovered that one of the taps is a /G\T/D\, and I felt a little sheepish even trying to make a small case out of that for some leeway.

Thanks.
