Awesome old box! I’d hit it with Gibbs oil and very fine steel wool (after using mild soap and warm water getting off rust flakes and grime) It will make that cool logo pop!

Thanks for the tip Ooba. I want to preserve as much as possible.

Hey smokes, I pick it up Wednesday after work. Hopefully there is a story that goes along with the box.

Here’s a pic of the ad on offer up:

I do appreciate the picture of the ad! That is a fantastic deal. You may not want to post pictures of the ad unless you are fully certain the seller will hold it until you pick it up. There have been instances where people on the internet have found ads posted by members and have bought things out from under them. I just don’t want to see you get skunked

Thanks for the advice. I was just so excited That I couldn’t wait to share with you guys. it’s sad that there are people like that.
The seller was kind enough to remove the ad and I shared my contact info with him.

Hi all,

Reading the earlier post on the mechanics tool chest:drool: made me want one for my collection.

I spotted this toolbox for sale today:bounce:. I reached out to the owner and he is willing to hold it for me. Not as nice as sawdust’s but pretty cool!

Congrats! Looks like a 39 model to me and even has the tray! My guess is that thing will clean up pretty good. Let's see pics when it comes home!!

Of course! I would be super excited as well. I just wanted you to not get skunked. What rileysan and I do is screenshot the ad and then post the ad along with pictures when it is safe in your grasp! I had a bit of trolling fun with this craftsman tool chest last fall after I had it safe in my grips

hey, propmaker.
It could be. There appear to be 2 small holes under the Flowmaster sticker where a heritage badge was once held there by rivets. If that's the case, those were made from about 1945 to mid-'50s if I'm not mistaken? I'm sure the guys can help confirm if it was badged as a craftsman.

Looks like a 45-48 Heritage chest made by AMD. In 49 (or more likely late 48) they went to one pull per drawer. Nice that it has the tray. Many are missing it. EDIT: Or...it could be an AMD chest not marketed through Sears. Are the what looks like two holes drilled all the way through? I have an AMD chest that has dimples where the Heritage logo would go that were never drilled through and side handles that differ from what Sears sold. Can we see a pic of the side handles?

I'm going to pick it up tomorrow, I'll post better pics once I have it

Also, did AMD make a green tool box of a similar design? I saw on at an estate sale right before the shut and passed on it. Kind of kicking myself because it was in mint shape, but had no markings

The side handles and square corners are exactly like my prewar AMD boxes. The red paint on the interior has me scratching my head a bit. If original that box wasn't sold through Sears (unless there's something out there we don't know about). Need a good close up shot of the front cover right above that hasp loop. If it's a Heritage it's an early one before they rounded the corners and changed the side handles.

Ignoring the red paint which could have been a very comprehensive spray bomb at one point, I'd say it's an immediately-post-war Heritage.

Picked up the toolbox and wiped things down to assess the extent of the rust. I also picked through the items the seller left in the toolbox. Here are some pics.

Thanks, sawdust. I'm really happy with it.

Any suggestions on how I should address the bare metal/rust issues on the bottom and front panel? Also, I tried removing the drawers so that I could assess the inside bottom but the tabs would not budge and I didn't want to damage them. Do you know how I can bend them back without damaging the drawer?

Thanks,
Dan

It has drawer slides? Mine with that waterslide logo and the drawer/main compartment dividers like that doesn't have drawer slides, which leads me to believe it's a 49. My later model has drawer slides and a riveted on rectangular logo and the drawers/main compartment are divided differently. I've seen a third variant and now yours..is yet a fourth variant.

Enough of my rambling though. I made a tool out of a hack saw blade to push in and depress the tabs. I had to narrow the blade down a bit on a grinder to make it fit. If you youtube removing Snap On drawers, the process is the same.

For the bare metal, I just clean it as well as I can then wax it down and make sure I re-wax it now and then.

No drawer slides.
I highlighted the area in the pic. I appears that they punched a hole at the top to create a tab so the drawer doesn’t slide out completely. They repeated the process for the lower drawer. Hope that makes sense.

Ah OK. It does make sense. I have one identical to yours with no drawer slides. Not sure what's going on the the hole punches from a PO but sounds like you'd just need to bend the deformed metal back into shape best you can to remove the drawer.

So yours doesn’t have those tabs. Your toolbox drawers slide out completely? It appears to have been made from the factory. I’ll play with it a little more today.
Thanks you.

CL find today. $55. Last pic is what turned up when I typed in the model number. So looks like Packard made these. My tool has a numbered brass tag, where the restored one doesn’t. Also, the on/off switch is vertical while mine is side to side. Only differences I spot. So perhaps 1930s vintage?

I have a 1/2 horse one I picked up in about the same condition as that one. I did a full restore and added a brass wheel. One of my most used tools.

Not sure of the power on that one, but nice score!

ooba tooba--the oval brass tag is an asset tag attached by the company that owned it. The number would correspond to a listing and description of capital equipment owned by the company. BTW, a great old grinder!

Thanks! Model number indicates 1/3 hp. Nice work on yours! I would very much like to restore it like yours. Did you have to find parts like the shields or light for yours? If so, do you have a link? Thanks!

No, mine came as you see it. Cracked glass and everything. The light I found later on eBay, but I have never been happy with it.

I also have one in the garage, restored by Red Leader on here (1/3HP). Got it in a trade. Missing one outside guard, but he mounted a buffing wheel on that side.

I was considering doing the same. I have 3 grinders now. A 1725 rpm 6” Westinghouse, the 7” Long C 3450 rpm and a Baldor 6” 3650 rpm.
Is the lower speed better for polishing/sharpening tools? I think I’ve seen somewhere the wire wheel is also safer on the lower speed. Perhaps on some machinists forum some time ago.

The Long C logo hung around on some things for a long time after the Heritage logo was ushered in particularly in castings of component parts for machines. That's a post-war machine.
