No. It’s just a modified unmarked placeholder. I’m hoping to someday run across an original at a price I can afford. Roy is sending me the missing extension.

Last week Smokeshow sent me a text with a link to an eBay listing, and the question "Do you need this?".

Gah!

Happily, it was a BIN listing and I've been holding my breath until it showed up this morning.

Metal box for Craftsman # 4374 box end wrench set, ca. 1939-?

I dug out my DBE wrenches and started filling in the gaps. I'm short one wrench - a 1/2" x 9/16" shorty that I'd be happy to trade for.

The last photo is from the listing.

Turned up with these Craftsman BE sockets in a box of randoms (I promised myself I would retire from the practice of buying odd lots, but I lie to myself a lot...). The whole box was $5, so what the heck....right?

Curious of the finish on the ones that appear almost aluminum. Is this a nickel plate for the war era?

Equally intrigued by the bronzish "patina" on the others. Baked on grime? or representative of a finish other than chrome?

The top row are 8 point, and the bottom 12 point. All are 1/2 drive and the 3 smaller sockets are Circle H, the balance are BE

I am wondering if that "bronze" finish is the remains of the preservative that was put on at the factory. I have a 1/4 set from that period that I don't think was ever used as the pieces are still covered with it.

Finally found my first Long C bottom chest albeit a pretty rough one. Saw it posted on MP with only one frontal photo with the cover closed. The locking system and placement of the rivet holes led me to believe it might be a Long C chest. I asked the seller for pictures with the drawers open. The blue paint sealed the deal. I'd love to give it a refurb one day but it's wayyyyyyy down the list. I'll use it as-is for the time being.

I "think" the aluminum looking ones are cad plated. There's smarter guys than me that can weigh in on that. I see a lot of Circle U sockets with that finish. The bronze-ish looking ones have a coating on them as bmwrd suggested. I'm pretty sure it's BLO. I see so much New Britain made Craftsman stuff of that era with that coating I'm 100 percent convinced it was OEM applied.

I believe the brown finish is boiled linseed oil ?

BLO = Boiled Linseed Oil.

And yes, that is the General consensus, concluded in several discussions of the preservative.

It's up to you, of course. The tools never remain evenly or consistently coated with BLO but what remains does protect the tools nicely. Some of the sockets I've cleaned up shine like new. For the most part, I leave the BLO alone now.

I usually let it be as well. The New Britain treatment seems much tougher than most BLO coatings.

After trying to remove that OEM coating from a 1/2D set, I leave it alone now! That stuff is tough. I've heard of other collectors "easily" stripping it off but no such luck for me. Wore me out. If it's worn down to spotty coverage I use wax or Fluid Film depending on what mood I'm in to prevent rust on the unprotected surfaces.
