Detail of the nested diamond grips that Smokes mentioned. Those boxes are great artifacts even if they are empty. Yes, I did wrap up my Thanksgiving by painting the laundry room in order to fend off the food coma.

Hi smokes,

Thanks for sharing some pics of your diagonal cutters. Ever since I got the boxes I’ve been scouring my local swaps and flea market with no luck.

Regarding the boxes:
So a few months back I saw an ad for an estate sale about an hour away from my residence. There were a few photos of late 40’s power tools. So I flagged it as a reminder since the sale was still a few weeks away. A few weeks later I went back to check for updates on the site and noticed the garage photos were not in the gallery of items being sold. I contacted the agency and they told me that the family would like to sell all the contents in garage together and that I can come and make an offer for the lot. The family was asking around $1200 for the lot. I went to look at the items but could not justify spending that much and pull the trigger as my garage is already full of stuff. But as I was looking through all the toolboxes and cabinets my heart almost jumped out of my chest! I made a small pile of long C items including the boxes. I offered the family $800 for the lot hoping they would bite but was shot down. Understandably, I asked if I could pay for the small pile I stacked on the side. She was so sweet she said I could have them for free!:rocker: she must of felt bad since I made the long trip.

So now they are part of my collection!
The small wrench box was also found empty next to the other ones in an old toolbox. Looking back I strongly believe it was a craftsman with the decal worn off. I regret not buying the lot. There were a few wood cabinets with locks. God only knows what treasures could of been inside.

Heck of a story on finding those boxes and tools! Even if you didn’t get everything you still got some great stuff !

Empty or no, those boxes are absolutely jaw dropping. Outstanding collection!!

Nice to see all the great boxes and holders, that apron, hammer collection, and of course the showing of vises.

While scrolling through an old GS thread I ran across the photo of this pouch.

Yeah, it was nice for its age.

Smoke I just saw your post of the nos amber grips. I’m not sure if you figured out an age, but I spotted them in the 1949 catalog at Blackburn. That book is full of long C and heritage logos.

When the seller at the flea market looked at this ratty pouch in the pile I had pulled out of three tables of stuff yesterday morning he smirked, "What are you going to do with that old thing?" I already had a few things in mind when I smirked back, "Put some old tools in it." :) I have no idea how it was originally branded, and it may have been meant for little punches. The flap won't fold over this mainly Craftsman ignition wrench set (note that the Craftsman branded wrenches and the Merit were made by Vlchek, too), but 'it'll do, pig, it'll do'. It even snaps shut.

If I understand correctly, you bought that pouch empty, so is it safe to assume you put that (somewhat) random set together?

Are the Craftsman wrenches stamped with BT or something else? I'm intrigued by the brand comparisons as another member with more experience than I (Twertsy) did not attribute BT ignition wrenches to Vlchek. I have no opinion on the matter because I don't own any Craftsman (or Merit) ignition wrenches to compare with the Vlchek wrenches I do own.

Hi Brian,

Yes, I bought the pouch empty. See upper left in Pic 1 from Garage Sale thread. I have a number of in-progress and completed sets in need of pouches or roll-ups (See Pic 2), so I am always on the lookout.

I found these wrenches randomly, in three separate finds over time, in this case, twosy (Vlchek), onesy (Merit), and foursy (Craftsman), with one of the Vlchek's (3/8" x 11/32") that is not shown being duplicate to one of the Craftsman and left out of the pouch. But, I am putting them together in the same pouch as a "set" (by OEM) with the utmost arbitrariness. There is zero doubt in my mind (and note that I am normally wary of being that declarative for fear of being that wrong) that they were made by the same mfgr. I suspect Vlchek, but I am not going to fall on my Babbitt scraper over it. It could be a third party. See Pic 3 for a closer group shot and Pics 4, 5 & 6 for even closer comparison photos that I have posted before in a different thread.

Now look at Pic 7. On the top is the pouch I just found. On the bottom right is a K-D ratcheting wrench set. On the bottom left is a Sears, Roebuck & Co Fulton pliers set, all made by K-D. See anything common about the pouches? Look at the snaps. Possible the same supplier. The 1941 Craftsman catalog shows ignition wrenches with this profile branded DUNLAP. I suspect they used the same supplier with a different finish for wrenches they branded CRAFTSMAN. No pouch though. And yet I feel pretty good about the resonating implications of this mixed "set" in this pouch. If only for my own purposes.

The nos grips I posted are crown top so they can’t be any earlier than 1958... I didn’t see the grips you posted from the 1949 catalog so I am glad you found that !

Found these parrot heads this morning at the flea. They have an interesting logo. Not Long C. Not quite geometric C. And those = = markings bracketing the U.S.A. almost look like a foreshadowing for the Heritage era logo. I have something, tin snips, I think, with a similar logo that I have taken for late 40's, but it didn't have those colons. This... " =:U.S.A. := " is a new one on me. Also a strange pivot pin. It's only half round. Nested diamonds grip.

Whenever I see that grip pattern I start looking at Champion deArment for a match. Here is the closest I found.

I did add a few pliers to the fold over the past few days. I haven’t cleaned them up at all yet. I added a pair of channellock made circle c linesman pliers from member out of bounds and also added this pair of pliers from eBay. I believe we discussed this type of mark being made by krauter a few pages back? I haven’t looked up their use yet either but I swear I saw them as gas line pliers? Their grips are different from the nested ones so maybe they are earlier?

I picked up a few old Craftsman tools yesterday, including these two.

IMG_6731.jpg

This is the first screw grabber driver I've found. The wound-band-spring is pretty neat.

IMG_6725.jpg

I have a few of this style handle, but I think this is the firs one with a circle I.

IMG_6726.jpg

The push drill has one broken bit and is missing the other three small ones. Still a fun find for a buck.

IMG_6752.jpg

IMG_6751.jpg

Does that tool belong in the Heritage thread? If so, I apologize.

Nice find Mintgun. I'm always thrilled to find an amber handle screwdriver. The push drill belongs here. After the war they went with one that's very similar but was produced in West Germany.

According to AA this CRAFTSMAN C-1729 CHROME-VANADIUM wrench is from 1930 and Nickel plated. It looked a lot rustier before a little scrubbing, but cleaned up pretty well.

Not too long ago, I finally found a bottom box that matches my memories of the one my grandfather had when I was a boy,

50684289393_db2a1262bc_z.jpg

and while my efforts to find the other tools of the time have been lackluster ( I have a pair of diagonal cutters, a pair of linesman's pliers, an Allen wrench set, and like one tappet wrench), I have put a respectable dent in gathering the sockets, ratchets and affiliated tools,

50684289728_3dd3a07f43_z.jpg

Having decided on the "BE" versions for the shop box, and "H" items for my road box, so as to not mix things up.

I did find this oddball 7/16" socket,

50685045221_cd2326f1ae_z.jpg

which I assume predates the early '40s boxes and tools.
