Picked up some brake caliper hooks from amazon

20241218_135446.jpg

Bright colors are good for these things! I've had one take a long tour of the region hanging from a coil spring. It was dark and unpainted.

Still not as dumb as the several-year ride of the 7mm box end on a brake bleeder ****** that I did in the 80's.

Anyway, that being said, these hooks are great things to have.

I went a little crazy on Black Friday 🤪

Got the Icon 3/8" Split Beam on 40% as part of their 12 days of Christmas. Also picked up the Gen2 M12 stubby from Acme Tools on a Cyber Monday deal as well as the Koken 1/4" drive zeal flex head. Still waiting on some more Koken tools that should ship sometime in January. Then I picked up 16mm and 18mm Wright Grip wrenches to fill a set of older Wright wrenches I have. Finally, some more CAT tools courtesy of Snap-On. Picked up the 3 piece pliers set, 1/4" drive deep well sockets, and a 15/16" 4-way wrench to tighten the camber arms on my E46.

Little confused by the CAT socket label, printed in USA? Not Made in USA . . .

Never seen a CAT branded tool before . . .

Tekton 35mm socket.
I've been reading that people recomenend Tekton quite a bit as an affordable but decent wrench /socket maker.
Having recently acquired a 2009 Toyota Tacoma I'm busy making sure I have all tge size wrenches. Sockets etc hence the purchase of this 35mm socket. But now I want to fill in the gaps between 32 and the largest 1/2 socket in both 6 and 12 point, i think thats 38mm ? I only just finished with the gaps from 4mm to 32mm.

I haven't used this , but the forging/machining is pretty good for a measley $9. At 1st glance this comes across as a bargain.
Coo Taiwan
Tekton sockets/wrenches are the cream of the crop. Lifetime NO BS warranty. Their master socket sets are 100% worth the money. I have 1/4 and 3/8 sets. Once you hit 1/2in though I'd want impact sockets only.

Need to keep a scan tool on current software, and the yearly 1150 from Snap On had me consider other options. This is the 1st scan tool bought outside offical automotive specialty channels. Hopefully the fact the topdon website and Amazon had identical sale pricing last week means I'll have no issue setting it up and getting on AutoAuth.

10" screen, good weight, and 2 years up software for ~$950.

Some German and Taiwanese goodness.

-Stalwhile 7 pc 6-19mm offset wrenches CCO Germany
-Nos Ampro 1-3/8 ( or a smidgen under 35mm) COO Taiwan ( that's a partially peaked of sticker , not a defect )
-36mm Tekton 6 point 1/2 socket COO Taiwan
-36mm Tekton 12 point 1/2 socket COO Taiwan

Waiting for my Dowidat 6 pc 20-36mm offset wrenches to arrive, was hoping they'd arrive today but delayed by a day or 2. I was originally going to buy the 12 pc gedore set bit that wasn't in stock so I opted for the Stawhile set off amazon $85 and a Dowidat set off ebay. It pretty much ended up costing the same as the Gedore 12pc set would have so don't know if I was silly , but I do end up with an extra wrench in the form of a 30x36mm.
The Stalwhile 6-19 , Dowidat 20-36, Ampro 1-3/8 and 2 Tekton 36mm sockets came all in at a smidgen over $200 , i think I did ok.

it'd be great if you could start a separate thread on this and keep us posted on how well it works, any issues, how easy it is to use, what it does and doesn't do...

Ive just always used 1/2 sockets unless space /size was a factor. I started trusting 3/8 to do heavier work when my gedore 1/2 set was stolen and I bought an ampro 3/8 set and that ratchet held up on numerous oil changes and brake jobs but then went back to 1/2 when I replaced the set after a few years.
I do have 1/2 impact sockets up to 38mm but they're mainly deep sockets. Is there a reason you suggest that? I usually use impacts only when I need to with breaker bars after I start feeling sorry for my CRV sockets (very seldom). Genuinely curious.

I already have the base version of this tool, a Phoenix Lite 2. Like other brands, if you're comparing full function tools, they all have the same base software. So now I'll have 4 tools, but two running essentially the same software. The difference is this new tool has 2" bigger screen and the all important 2 years of free software. It was literally cheaper to buy a brand new Lite 2 (likely being discontinued) or the newer Lite 3, both of which come with 2 years of free software, than buy 2 years of just software updates for my current Lite 2.

I needed software, time to upgrade, this was the sweet spot of cost/function. I'll be canceling my snap-on subscription next time I see my dealer, which means this new tool will soon be the only current software tool I'm running. But snap on was ~ 1150/year for software, this tool for ~950 will get me 2 years of coverage.

Below is an initial impression of the Lite 2. If you want to talk scan tools you can PM me or pin it onto that conversation. Scan tools are a major expense and it's hard to quantify exactly what you're buying and what to expect.

The Dowidats arrived today, the remind me very much of Gedores. If they didn't have Dowidat written on them I'd think they were Gedores.

Will an 808 not work at all? I've used my Autel 906, as well as Topdon and Snap on tools, with out of date software.

Also, Authauth hit me up for another $50 for gateway bypass but I was expecting that.

That should be a 1 year, calendar year, recurring cost. Depending on brand(s) you work with you can forgo that.

Now if all of this is for a Chrsyler product, yeah you need current software and autoauth if you want bidirectional control. Data and clearing OBDII codes you can still reach.

Do you have aftermarket front axles? As a Toyota guy I haven’t run into needing a 35mm, but I’ve heard aftermarket front axles sometimes use a 35mm nut. OEMs are 36mm on 4Runners ad GXs. Maybe oem fronts on tacomas are 35mm? I didn’t have my tacoma long enough to break one so I don’t know.

I have two first gens. Both axle nuts are 35mm.

From the hot deals thread. I am weak… 😀

High Torque with a 5.0 ah battery. Paired that with a lugnut socket set. Been wanting a couple of the sockets but found a deal on the whole set. Will be nice being able to toss this combo in one of the vehicles for road trips.
