I had a 20% off coupon for Enco last week and I have been eyeballing a Starrett Telescoping Gage set to replace my el cheapo set. Plus I wanted to get a couple of Starrett tap handles.

I like the design of those tap handles. But I would think the little chuck block with the indent would be better at holding the tap than a pin/rod. no?

Both are 3/8 sets.

$85 for 10-19mm

$70 for 5/16-3/4".

That's at my shops pricing level which appears to be 60% of list in this case.

I do like that they come with my preferred style of socket organizer. Worth a few bucks.

When they don't offer anymore lol.

Bummer. Not a ton of matco stuff I get excited over. Lots of rebrand. The 88 locking flex are my favorite ratchet ever though.

I don't think anyone was arguing the amount invested, just carrying a 30k balance with the truck. Most realize it doesn't take long to invest 20k especially if you ever buy a new box.

I can get ya some. Haven't used one yet but first impressions are good. The finish is decent and they seem very solid built.

My 24" Is 1/2" drive. I used to have a 17" but I decided that If I want to use a 1/2" ratchet, I want to have some power.

My 12" 3/8 locking flex 88 is by far my most used ratchet. Perfect size for most things. Followed closely by my 6" 1/4". My matco 88s were the first pro tools I bought myself when I started building my own set 4 years ago.

Okay m8 I'm looking into matco tools has an option for tool supplies thanks :)

That looks like a better design than the Starrett. The starret doesn't look like it can hold as tight as the below. What brand is that? Where did you get it?

That's a pic stolen from the interwebz. But the tap holders I have all look like the upper ones above. Mine are made in Germany and acquired used a few years ago. Will have to see what the brand is when I get home but IIRC there is no brand name on them.

All eBay finds. Thinking that I'm going to keep the green instincts, I really like the handles and they're cleaning up well (the bottom I cleaned up). Trying to work my way through the ratchets/sockets, there were some engravings that weren't disclosed/pictured and one missing socket.

I've had both of those starrett tap handles for quite a few years now and i wouldnt hesitate to recommend them to anyone. Dont remember ever having them loosen up while holding a tap, theyre relatively small incase theres an obstruction amd the knurling gives you something to hold if you get some oil om your hands. I have a few other handles, but those are my go-to's

Mac Tools guy stopped by the shop today, hasn't stopped by in a while (I'm only there 3 weeks) but after me and another guy were on the truck he said he'll stop by more often.

Lost my pocket screwdriver so picked up this one. Could it be the start of buying more Mac tools? I don't know, only options so far are Matco and Mac.

I just ... had to.

Between the 5 1/2" heel, LimeLight green and Panther Pink it was the perfect workbench addition for the diehard chick Mopar fan. My masking tape fits in it too. It was even 20% off and set me back a whoppin' three bucks.

I know some of you are thinking "I can see why ......."

But I also betcha I'm the only one on GJ who has one. :D Neener neener LOL!!

I just was looking at some gear wrench stuff on amazon and saw they had gear wrench brand 7 piece SAE and 10pc metric 3/8 drive swivel combo for $90. Sounds like a good deal.

I have the same telescopic gauge set and they are awesome. Been using the same set for 20+ years without fail and they get out of the toolbox often:D

Tap handles I have never found a use for however. I have the sockets that fit all my taps up to 24mm, so the handles never make it out of the case.

I have the sockets as well but for some reason I still like the T handles. I have just used the ones that come in my two sets but have always wanted to upgrade to a really high quality tap handle. I finally did and love em.

I only used the telescoping gages once since last week when I received them and yes, they appear to be of very high quality. I wouldn't expect anything less from Starrett. The ones I have had for the past decade or so are just an import set. They have functioned as advertised but I just wanted to step up in quality.

At first I wondered about the same thing when I first looked at them. I too have the ones pictured above and they have worked fine in the past. I have seen them recommended over on a machining site I belong to and everyone seems to really like them so I thought I would give them a try.

Mmmm. One of the things I like about the handles is that you can just free spin them out once you are through going in.
With a socket on a sliding T handle (if that is what you use) you couldn't get the same effect unless you have one where the drive locks in the middle of the bar. But even then things might be a bit shakey due to all the slack in the assembly. A ratchet to tap holes isn't really the way of the samurai either.

I think I am gonna get me one of those Starret handles. They look whoa.

I might have to get a 3/8 impact at some point. It's 1/2 big brother is a bit on the heavy side for taking off under trays. And my 1/4 zip gun is on its last legs. See what tomorrow brings
