Before you condemn that saw, buy it a good blade -- like a Forrest. It'll cost
you some money, but it will be well worth it. Then make sure that the saw is correctly set up. Go thru the manual and check all the set up points to make sure they are spot on. You may also go online and see if anybody has a Youtube video on making that saw perform well. Good luck.

Yeah it's a cheaper Irwin blade. Not the the 28 tooth that came with it. I bought the 120T to do some finish cuts for a kitchen island.

I have to play with it some more. I'm no carpenter that's for sure and I admit my experience with wood working tools is very limited. I will spend some time learning to use this saw but the cuts so far just ripping some plywood and small pieces have been just so so. Along the quality of what I think I can do with my 7 1/4" circular saw.

I have a seen a YouTube video of a guy using one of these. He seems to be able to make it perform. I know a big part of the problem is my own inexperience. I'm much better with automotive / mechanical stuff than wood working and home improvement projects.

Anyone who has any suggestions, insights or general knowledge they feel like sharing feel free.

That's maybe blowing it out of proportion a little bit... They work fine, the new ones with the metal button are better.

Metal button didn't solve anything. The ratchet is either locked or...locked. If you try to use it like a standard flex (seemingly) a soft breeze nudges the lever out of flex and locks the head. The Armstrong system just works better.

Recently bought a set of Carlyle 1/4" drive 6-point metric sockets and, via HJE Day, a like set of SK sockets. I posted multiple pics of the sockets and a few observations in another thread:

http://www.garagejournal.com/forum/showthread.php?t=298379

so rather than repeat all the pics I'll show only one here and, if you are interested in more info and pics, go to the linked post.

My uncle is moving down to Florida and by some lucky chance I was able to get some stuff before his kids got it and sold everything. Also got lots of old Craftsman sockets.

I got this. A mighty 7 1/2 drive impact gun. Pretty nifty little gun, 650Nm and super super small. Can't wait to use it.

I found this nice vintage Craftsman circular saw. It was too cool to pass up but I still don't know what I'll do with it.

Thanks. Yeah Im trying the blade swap today. In my previous post I mentioned it has a cheapo Irwin 120 tooth blade I put on there.

If you are ripping material, as opposed to crosscutting, you should use a blade with 32 to 40 teeth. 80 to 120 tooth blades are for fine crosscuts.

You may want to look for a blade that has been laser cut, like a Diablo (Freud) or Forrest as opposed to the less expensive stamped blades that come with most saws.

Good luck.

Nice! When did Mac take over Blackhawk?

if i had to hazard a guess i'd say stanley was using the mac division to sell blackhawk before switching the brand over to proto... but don't quote me on this... all i can say for certain is the invoice from the order listed the set as discontinued (probably why it was on the closeout section of the mac site) and the part numbers for the individual sockets haven't changed

I gave a friend who just got in to 4x4s my old harbor freight set of wrenches with no skips, so the kobalt set that was in my home chest gets to move back in to the tool roll in the trail buggy. That means there's room for a new flank drive plus set in the main chest. I have a 21mm and 24mm (for GMT400 front ends) and a 15/16", 1-1/8", and 1-1/4" (GM tie rod and drag link ends on the crawlers) in the mail headed this way. I was actually surprised that the profile of the open end on the Kobalts is identical to the snap ons. They aren't terribly strong, but they fit in just as cramped of spaces. The SAE flare nut wrenches are new also. The old Harbor Freights served me well, but they were also passed on to a new user in need.

Parents stopped by to visit for a week and my dad showed up with what appears to be a white gas torch and an old set of locking pliers. The pink Enderes 4-in-1 screwdriver is new from eBay also.

The 1/2" Armstrong flex head is part of my Epstein's Day order also. Been needing that guy for a few years.

owenst7 - I have a torch exactly like that. Came from my Fathers garage - used to melt lead for sinkers. Man, I spent hours huddling over that when I was a kid making sinkers for sale. Had a pile of tire weights every year, and I must have inhaled a measurable quantity of lead. In the 60's, nobody thought a thing of melting lead in an enclosed area. What we know now.

Have you gotten to try out that set yet? I'm thinking of picking it up this weekend when I'm up in Chicago since they have them up there.

I have. For the $ it's a good set. An entry into the Milwaukee world. Although, I've have had a dewalt 20V for a few years now and it will still be my go to for most projects. The dewalt fees better in my hands. It's smaller than the Milwaukee M12 in the grip and just overall feels better.

But at this price, the Milwaukee is a good buy.

Very nice! Did the Proto drivers come from Zoro as well?

I did. It wasn't a special price but the only way I could find these sizes with free shipping. This is to add to my "set" I got last year from HJE. That set annoys me as it only has two phillips drivers. One really long, and one stubby:dunno:? Not I feel better. I do use Astro Pneumatic, and Craftsman drivers as well. There's so many good choices out there, it's hard to choose.

If you're in the market from some, look at the newer type of Proto's. They're supposed to be chemical resistant and look awesome.

Well half good ole quality USA HJE SK and Armstrong goodness and half Sushi. Funny, I ordered the Koken tools about a week+ after the HJE weekend and was wondering who's would come first. Looks like a dead tie :). Also I'm not sure what's up with that 1/2" ratchet, but I'm not digging the mechanism in the least. I sure hope it just needs lube, but right now I'm sorry I purchased it the way it is.

Man, I miss working in a shop where the tool trucks came around every week. Although my wife and wallet are happier without it!
