I'm sure this isn't "vintage", as they're still sold at NAPA (for one hell of a lot more than I paid), but

54605004176_ed5d5defe8_o.jpg

I can't find a manual for it. It has two nozzles--the brass one installed and silver one on top in reserve. The silver one has a mushroom-shaped insert. Are these two different spray patterns?

I did pressurize it a play around a little, but it's empty (no rust) so couldn't really tell the difference. I think I'll fill it with Brakclean or similar.

Timm, those are actually "Sure Shot" brand sprayers as a source - google that for more, but:

instructions:

And the source page:
Thanks!

Now, what to put in it? The residue in it smells like a penetrating oil, but I'm thinking a cleaner/solvent like BraKleen or carb cleaner--maybe just straight acetone?

It seems to work just fine. There was no gasket for the cap, so I used a #112 Viton o-ring.

This has been my dilemma! I have 3-4 of them (one needs rebuilt...) but I really have no come up with a good use.

Maybe cutting oil and set it up for a tight stream?
From the smell of the residue, I'm starting to think it was cutting oil, not penetrant.

Solvent/cleaner makes the most sense to me, but the paint on the can ain't gonna last long.

Balkamp/SureShot Model A update: I haven't been able to successfully make a cap gasket that will hold acetone at 125 psi. The original appears to have been PTFE--which I don't have as sheet goods. I tried Viton and Buna-N in 1/16" and 1/8. I tried various o-rings. all blow out after a while. The cap gasket is also a size that I can't exactly match with my concentric punch set.

I just ordered a full set of gaskets from Sure Shot--$4 and change--and $6 shipping.

BTW: According to Sure Shot, the paint is powder coat. It handles acetone just fine.

I found an unmarked small oiler at an estate sale on Saturday. I did some straightening on the spout and cleaned off the crustiness on the oiler and spout. The Gem spout interchanged so they may have been the manufacturer.

I was somewhat dismayed to find out that my most recent find was not, in fact, originally intended to be used as an "oiler", but rather a dispenser for "Welderseal Adhesive".

The Landis Machine Company of St. Louis, Missouri manufactured large machinery for the shoe repair industry, among other things, so I think it's reasonable to assume that their "Welderseal Adhesive" was some sort of glue used to repair footwear.
I'm hoping I'll be able to clean it up a bit and use it for oil.

This is not the same Landis Machine Company / Landis Tool Company of Waynesboro, Pennsylvania (which later became Landis Solutions LLC, a large manufacturer of threading and cutting devices.

Picked up this one, along with the Enarco, 1924 Newsletter. Inside there is an offer to receive a free oil can, so I don't know if they are together because of that or not. Love the graphics, and the woman on the front.

Quite amusing is the obvious error in the punch, "Mad in Canada". It is heading in to winter so it applies to my feeling about the weather, be that as it may. ;)

They have rebuild kits for them. We had them in the motorcycle shop i worked at. We would use them for brake cleaner, ordered it in 55 gallon drums.

follow-up on this piece:

I called Alex (Ardesson's Shoe Repair) and asked "Hey Alex! You ever heard of a company called Landis?"
He laughed and said "Yeah, those big green machines in the back are old Landis machines!"
I described to him what I'd found and asked him how I might go cleaning it and perhaps making it usable again.
He went on about different chemicals and speculated that acetone or tolulene might work to cut dried adhesive, but he had his doubts.
Then he continued "Bring it out here I have a bottle of some stuff we can try out on it."
I thanked him for his time and told him I'd give it some thought.

I did manage to get it cleaned up a bit, but as far as "pump action" goes, it's going to be a distant memory for this one.

I found this crusty early Plews oiler at a recent estate sale. It took some time but I removed the rust from the reservoir and most all the crust from the pump section. I used my wood vise to straighten the spout IMG_5264.jpeg
IMG_5308.jpegIMG_5307.jpegIMG_5310.jpeg
It looks very much like the one in my wartime NAF (Navy) catalog. IMG_5321.jpeg
I added it to my Navy toolbox. IMG_5417.jpegIMG_5418.jpeg

Got this vintage Plews oil can from my neighbor. She is cleaning out the property. Her husband died back in 2023. He was my Boy Scout leader when I was in scouts and I went to school with her son. She called today said she’s in the next phase of cleaning and to come down and see what she has. I got everything for free and then bought his torch that has been something I’m looking for. This was in one of the boxes of motor oil and other miscellaneous items like anti seize and gasket makers. Great find.

Someday I would like to find one with the little screw on spout shown in the NAF listing in place. It’s missing on all of the ones I’ve seen.
I found this long spout Eagle oiler at a recent estate sale. Since the oilers often have a significant amount of oil in them, I need to put a large ziplock bag in with my going to sales goodies.
IMG_5473.jpegIMG_5474.jpeg
Cleaned it up a little and added it to the others in the basement. IMG_5559.jpegIMG_5560.jpeg
It’s on the far right. IMG_5561.jpeg
I was gifted this cute miniature. IMG_5562.jpeg
I had to add an oiler overflow shelf. IMG_5564.jpeg

On Christmas we were at the annual family gathering and during the gift exchange I was very pleasantly surprised to receive an Eagle oiler from my nephew. I didn’t realize that he was aware of my unnatural fascination with old tools. Apparently he found it at an antique dealer In Martinez CA. I plan to give it a prominent position in the basement oiler display. IMG_5676.jpegIMG_5677.jpegIMG_5678.jpegIMG_5679.jpegIMG_5680.jpeg

Very cool. Having your nephew give it to you makes it even one more cool.
