I recently seen a thread or two about a specific clip tool so I figured odd start a thread about all clip tools. Post a pic of ur trim tools and what brands they are and what your favorite ones are
Here's mine

My favorite are the 4 on the right. The little seal puller on the very right isn't classed as a clip tool but I use it on clips where u first need to pop the center out. All the blue plastic ones are a cheap 5 dollar hf set. All I can say about them is nothing but good. I rarely uses the black handle snap on one with the "V" end.
Id like to get a long handled clip tool but haven't come across the situation where I need one

I only have a few, but they're handy when you need 'em.

I think the red handle one is made by Lisle. Eastwood makes the one in the center.

The hard plastic blade is made by Profit.

I'm interested in what others find useful.

I forgot about that flat hard plastic tool.
I got one plastic and one wood. those are for the rubber weatherstrips around doors and trunklids and other rubber stuff.
I forgot 'cause theyre in a different drawer:lol:

and I just remembered...that door handle/window crank tool.
I do think there are some new work trucks & vans(ford) that still have a manual window crank.

Being an auto glass tech, I've got a few I've collected over the years. Not all are used for the task they were designed for! For example, the hose picks don't get used for removing hoses - they're for prising out trims, cleaning out channels, and "picking" things;

Snap On A161B and A177A (I'd like a 181 to complete the set)

No brand offset, and Draper mini picks

Long slot and crank (both ends are cranked, the slot end is about 30º, the blade end about 40º
Door glass winder tool
Plastic "dibber" (tapered both ends)
Bluepoint "Viper"
45º scraper
Flat scraper

nz4r52.jpg

Hose picks (standard and cotter pin)
Tack lifters (medium and small)
Mini flat screwdrivers (sharp and rounded)
Awl/straight pick
Snap On 90º and hook picks

Snap On hose picks (2x standard, 1x long)

Double ended offset, seal/o-ring remover

Nice collection Matt!
I've always wondered with the snap on what the difference in the 177 and 181 is. They both have a u shape hole and one the dish is up top and the other is on the bottom. Never really seen a real benefit in the side. They both really work on the same style clip

Exactly right - same shape open end, just the 177 has the bevel on the underside, and the 181 on the top side. Snap On suggests 177 is for GM and "most imports" with the 181 being for Honda, Toyota, Acura, Hyundai, and some Ford trucks...

I think if I got the 177 one of them wouldn't get used because I wouldn't be sitting there thinking which one to grab since they are so similar

I have one of those crazy bent neck ones like dudes Mac
Bunches of clip pliers and the yellow harbor fright kit(which I use very frequently)
And the oring seal tools from snapon, used them on a few orings but mostly trim to pop up pieces and not gouge

The red-handled double-ended job on the top isn't actually a trim tool, either.

It's an electrical connector separator tool.

I remember buying that and it was labeled as a panel remover tool. It does look very similar to a connector seperator. I'll have to try using it as that sometime!! Haha

When do you use the mac hooked clip tool?

I don't know it's specific application, but I've used it plenty.
I know I've used it on door panels from some cars from the 50s & 60s(back when the clips were metal)
I think the last time I used it on a modern car was a grand Cherokee.

its good for when your trying to get at the clips at the front of the door(at the A pillar) where theres not as much room.

I have a mix of Blue-point and Snap on. But honestly... how do you guys know which tool to use? Blind luck, trial and error?

For me, yeah, trial and error.

I pick whichever I think will be appropriate for the task, and then go to work - carefully.

If a particular tool isn't doing the job, I move on to another.

I'm sure there's probably a guide somewhere that I've missed. :D

Those Astro Pneumatic tools are what are in my pic above.

Great stuff.

I've got two sets in there, as I've munged up a couple pieces by using them where I shouldn't have.

I have a couple. The snap on set. They get used on some door panels were there are clips way up at the top of the door and you can only access them from the bottom. BMW door panels and c5 Corvettes come to mind. There are more just can't remember.

I just use a flathead to get those. Pop out the center then the whole thing. I hate the ones you have to screw out.

I was asking because I don't have one of the long ones and I wanted to see if it's worth getting

And for those clips above...I use a little red seal pry tool that I have pictured to pop the center out then my normal clip tool to pop the whole thing out

i'm so glad that for the most part ChryCo vehicles now just use a few screws, some of those stupid screw in clip things and then you pull the panel up and off...no dickin around pulling clips off the panel and destroying most in the process like in the days of yore

anywords, that said, my go to is my pocket screwdriver, and the red handled lisle fork things that i use on oh so many other things that just those clips...

Just used one of these window crank tools on a 2006 Chevy Colorado this week. I think the newest car I've needed one for was a 2010ish Nissan Versa.

I also have a nail/tack puller in my trim tool arsenal. Use it occasionally on smaller clips, such as the exposed ones often used on trunk liners.

I really need to buy tool for this clip..it gets me every time.

41jdQ1vRHML._SX300_.jpg

I have a $8 pin pliers from HF for those.

IMHO this is one area where HF shines, $50 will buy a pile of fastener removal tools. I have a couple sets of the plastic wedges and prys, several special pliers, and have my eye on that set of extra long handle tools, but all of them being junk so far has coincided with all the sales.

Most used is my Lisle Y tip with a rubber donut on the shaft so it doesn't mar paint when you pry with it.

What I need is a huge wall poster showing which tool I should be using.

Yeah, you need a pair like the Harbor Freight ones mentioned previously. I have straight and 80 degree angled versions that I got from Cripe on Ebay about 2 years ago. Mine are Taiwan made KD/Gearwrench brand and I paid $13.50 total for both of them. Cripe doesn't have the listing anymore, but they are still available from other sellers online. They are KD 3888 (80 degree angled) and KD 3729 (straight) and they look just like the one in the HF link.

I had assumed there was a tool for those stupid things and I must have looked at that tool at HF a few times but I never connected the two lol. Maybe I'll pick them up next time I'm there
