Thanks for starting this thread Sam's. I'm pulling a lot of Vlchek from the tools I brought home from Ohio. Interesting story behind the guy, a true American success story. So far I've put together a complete WB combo wrench set. Everything else so far is bits and pieces. I believe the oldest pieces in here are the curved obstruction wrench marked Chrome Molybdenum and the DOE beside it marked only with the V over a shield. Most of it's pretty ratty, haven't got to cleaning it yet.

Nice group, I especially like the locking pliers.
Me too! I have a lot of Vlchek tools, and I see a lot more that I leave behind (either vintage dupes, or modern, which I don't collect), but I have never seen those before.

JoCo: Has the double offset DBE with the gap in the one box end been modified? Or is that really some kind of combo box/line wrench?

I believe this is the last of the Vlchek for a while. Nothing too thrilling today. Not sure if the round shaft DBE marked Chrome Molybdenum in the Vlchek style font is actually a Vlchek or not. The only other marking on it is 13/16 WB26. Both ends of the wrench are the same size. Perhaps belonged in an auto kit for GM? The DBE set is an economy panel bar series which, according to AA, was first offered in 49 and still in the catalog at least up to 59. Not marked Vlchek but has the forged in asterix to identify them. Finally, the ratcheting DBEs. These are newer stuff and doesn't interest me much.

Not 100 percent sure it's Vlchek, that's merely my assumption. I do know they didn't put their name on a lot of auto kit tools, this has the "WB" code on it and the font of Chrome Molybdenum is the same as Vlchek marked tools. Until somebody shoots me down otherwise I'm going with Vlchek. Whatever it is, it's a pretty cool wrench and I wish I had more of em.

That's funny Joco, I don't hardly ever see Vlchek around here. I know I've seen a few here and there, but nothing that stood out and definitely never a set. You took em all to NC lol

Last week I grabbed my 1st Vlchek "tool", this smaller socket box. Looks like it would have had a 3/8 basic set, probably with a Challenger style round head ratchet as posted earlier in the thread. Unfortunately it was empty and kinda beat up, but I think it set me back a whopping $1 and is a decent little box.

Also snagged this Danielson pattern 6" adjustable.

Cool box Dave. I'm a freak for old badging/labels and that one is in nice shape. 70s maybe? Odd you don't see more up there. I was in the Cleveland area and swimming in Vlchek and Wright.

I agree with you on Wright, I live 15 min from Barberton and they are everywhere. Not certain things though, I never see Wright DBE wrenches or vintage pear head ratchets, but newer round head ratchets and sockets especially litter the ground.

I don't see much Herbrand or Vlchek. I've found more Vanadium Tool Co. or Lectrolite than Vlchek and Herbrand combined. I see a decent amount of Cornwell and the Sabina Ohio Mac. I think my results are atypical lol.

Just picked up this tiny ball pein hammer today. What say the collective, 2 oz?
All it says is Vlchek Made in USA, and on top of the head there is s forged in V-shield.

Back on page 3 post #56, Stuart in MN found a Vlchek plastic parts container at a yard sale which was unusual, but I found a Vlchek Tackle Box (with tackle :))

20190501_140951.jpg 20190501_140938.jpg 20190501_141028.jpg

Anyone have any info about this division of Vlchek or have ever seen any other like this?

Hey gang, newbie here. Been lurking a long time without registering, finally decided I needed to see the pics easier.

Here is something I found over the weekend, and its noticeably missing from this thread, so thought I'd share.

IMG_20190604_084938-X2.jpg

It's an incomplete Vlchek 1/4" socket set, in original plastic box. Was priced at $11.95 back in the day. Look like its a 1504 TC, which isn't shown in my 1949 catalog, haven't found a newer one yet. If someone has that shown in a catalog, I'd love to know what's missing from the 13 piece set.

IMG_20190604_085100-X2.jpg

Contains
1800+ ratchet driver
1801 flex handle
1804 2-3/4" extension
6 point sockets (probably original)
7/32" 1007
1/4" 1008
9/32" 1009
5/16" 1010
11/32" 1011
3/8" 1012
7/16" 1014

8 point sockets (oops, not 12) look to be original to the set (edit)
1/4" 1108
5/16" 1100

IMG_20190604_085018-X2.jpg

And a couple of misfit Craftsman and USA G sockets in various sizes, not shown.

Enjoy

Picked up another "VLCHEK" CLEV'D, O. valve lifter this morning. Remnants of black japanning or enamel on this one. See Pics 1 & 2. This one is slightly different than the other one I have (See Pic 3 for shot of both), but I believe both are derived from the same patent: 1,159,626 (March 1914). See Pics 4 & 5 for marking.

Here is a Vlchek I got yesterday. It would just be a unknown wrench to me except for the V Shield emblem ID of the manufacturer. No sizes, just a FORGED IN USA. Also a number (17) with no particular meaning that I am aware of. I can find numbers like this on a lot of Vlchek, (possible something to ID the die?)

I have a similar wrench. It looks to be 1/2" and 9/16" with a V shield logo on one side and an "8" on the other side. No other markings. I'm also wondering about the numbers.

I was very fortunate to run into these wood-handled Vlchek Nut Drivers at the flea market this morning.

attachment.php

From bottom to top, a No. ND-20 (5/16"), a duplicate No. ND-20, a No. ND-22 (11/32"), a No. ND-24 (3/8"), and a No. ND-32 (1/2").

In the "Patience is a virtue!" category, I have had an orphan No. ND-16 (1/4") for a long, long time. It was my dad's! Every time I have posted it for whatever reason, I usually express no hope of ever finding its mates. Needless to say, I have never been happier to be wrong! :)

Here it is with the drivers I just one-fell-swooped this morning.

Close-up of the markings...

According to the 1941 Vlchek catalog, I am only missing a No. ND-12 (3/16"), a No. ND-28 (7/16") and a No. ND-36 (9/16"). I am definitely on a mission now.

It is amazing sometimes what is still out there. It just goes to show if you keep looking you'll find it eventually.

Looking for the following Plomb Pebbles Wrench 3061

Nice find indeed, Lugz. Handles look in amazingly good shape, even more so considering the age and the fact that they were bought to be used. How old do you reckon they are?

Well, they match the nut drivers in the 1941 catalog. Even though they're not included in the 1936 catalog, I believe they were making them in the 30's. I don't know about postwar.

EDIT: The difference between the one I have from my dad and the ones I just found is very noticeable, with my dad's being more worn on the handle. But that just adds to the story when I show them! :) I'll be on the hunt for a suitable OD green roll-up for them. As the catalog page indicates, they were made to Air Corps specifications.

Found this cool VLCHEK spanner wrench. Bartenstein patent issued in 1916. Thought it was unusual.

LUG: I've always liked Vlchek tools and now i'm liking that wood handled nut driver set you found too. I didn't know they made wood handled tools and thought they only made wrenches. are those pretty rare and since it's you do you know what year they left the factory?

live and learn!!

nice find!!

I think it's a first for this thread. I know I have never seen one in the wild. That design looks to be superior to the Billings design, where the adjustable jaw is shorter and hanging underneath. I have several Billings adjustable hook spanners and they are all too loose.

I don't know what year the nut drivers were made, exactly, but they are an identical match for the nut drivers shown and described in the 1941 catalog, and they are not included in the 1936 catalog, so I am guessing they were introduced sometime in the late 1930's. Most of the tools I inherited from my dad were from the 30's or 40's. He was born in 1924. I've told this story before, but he was the 10th of 10, he was an uncle several times over as soon as he was born (having several nieces and nephews older than him), and two of my uncles (his older brothers) started Durable Plating Company in Cleveland, Ohio, only a few blocks from Vlchek. There's a good chance they did plating work for Vlchek.

Vlchek made just about everything, including very early flat head valve lifters. They were best known for wrenches, very high quality ball-pein hammers, pliers, and chisels, and complete car owner kits, supplying jeep tools during WWII and to Chevy in the 50's prior to the Plomb acquisition.

EDIT: If there is one area Vlchek is NOT known for it's socketry and drive tools. They didn't believe in it, got into that market extremely late, and never did make a dent. That's why Vlchek sockets and drive tools are so rare. In all my years, and the ton of tools I have collected, I have never seen a single socket, extension, or handle in the wild.

Picked my first Vlchek hammer today, handle looks to be well fitted but not sure it’s original.

Picked this up this morning at the flea. It has 1-9/16" x 1-7/16" hex throat service openings with 22-1/2* angled heads. Extremely thin, though, like old water pump wrenches. Wouldn't need to be hex for that, though. I've seen these before, but I can't remember what they're for, and the oldest catalog I have is 1936.

Fished this out of the bottom of a cardboard box of Chinese wrenches. Unmarked, save for the V shield, and the number 40.

Hello all, pictured ratchet was part of an assortment I recently acquired in Cleveland Ohio area. This is likely a keeper - great condition and nice feel to it. 50 tooth guts are nice too. My question is the part #, 3800+, I believe this is Wright production and I've located pictures of the 3800 and 3800-1, but not the 3800+. Sure it could be just running part number sequence, but just thought I'd check.
I'm too new to post images, I'll update post when I add more posts. (smilingfacewithratchetinmouth)
