Side box or top box?

I have the box in my avatar (obviously) and am quickly running out of room. I would like to add either a top box or a side box with drawers but after searching craigslist and ebay seem to be equally hard to find. What do you think is better option? The only real gain of a top is the space saving aspect of it but all the tiny drawers are just a pain. I like the idea of a side box a little better but it seems finding either are going to be close to impossible. Thanks

I think it is something like a kr-655 or kr-665.

I'd rather have wide, tiny drawers of a topper vs narrow, deep drawers. My side cabinet was the last addition I made because I already have a 26" wide double stack & 33" wide triple stack and they're all full. My vote is a top box. You can find a cheap Craftsman or Waterloo topper for cheap on Craigslist I'm sure way before you'll find a side box. Unless you must have matching top box.

It don't have to match, but I would like a mac, matco or snap on much like the one the far right stack.

having the set (kr655, kr650, and kr290), i can tell you that:

1) tops are much more available than sides . kr555 (slides) and kr655 (roller bearings) appear identical, and match the bottom

2) the kr290 will match the drawers on your bottom, except the bottom two on your kr655 are combined into one really deep drawer on the kr290.

3) depending on how you sort your tools, it is likely that the large drawers in the top will be more valuable.

4) a side(4000ci, 1200si) will likely cost more than a top (11000ci, 4500si), so no matter which way you look at it, the top is three times larger.

i would go for the top first, it will be cheaper, and easier to find. if you come across a side you like, pick it up, that never seems to be a bad move.

Well if your not super hung up on having. A match set then I think it boils down to space. Do you use the top of your box? If yes I would go with a side box that will give you that much more top if no I would go with a top box that saves floor space.

I do see both on cl evey now and then just keep a eye out they are usually fairly reasonable when they. Pop up.

if in the long run you intend on having a side box and a top box, consider buying the one that comes up first at a price you can't walk away from. if i was burdened with having to choose between the two, i'd choose a Snap-on top box of same time period as the bottom Snap-on box.

Unless you are using the lower as a work area, I'd go with the top to save floor space.

all depends on what you need to store, and how your box is organized.

i started with a kr 550/555b i bought new in '86
added the side box about a year later.
paid approx $1100 for the new side box.

i kept expanding with used trade-in's 2 more roller cabs, and several side boxes

good luck finding a matching SO side. i never saw many of them.

I think I'm going to end up going with a top because it sounds like it will be easier to find, my box is used as a work bench but not all the time as I do have a bench. I plan on at some point making it a set with a side and top but for the time being a top would probably work best. As for how I organize my tools the simple answer is, I don't. Although I did separate Sae from metric and put ratchets in another drawer. Does anyone have the dimensions of the kr 550?

Top box's are far more popular than sides therefore you'll see a lot more used ones listed for sale. When I do see a side box pop up on cl they normally have a high price and don't sit around long. Of course everything comes down to timing. If you are not really pressed to go one way or another I would say just keep an eye on the local adds till the next good deal comes along.

Side thought, if you use the top of your bottom box as a work area and are thinking of a side box, why not just look for another bottom box. This would expand your work area and give you the most new storage. Everyone's needs are different but that is how I have my set up geared..

Buy another snap on bottom that is similar to what you have ( same depth, same trim type)
Put them together and make a nice work bench out of it

Here's a couple thoughts. I hung a harbor freight side box on my KR-557 which has the KR-537 top box. If I didn't have the bottom/top box, I would consider a montezuma top box with the appropriate footprint for the bottom cabinet.

i had this set up at the last dealer i worked at, when i changed jobs the dealer i was at didnt have enough room for me to have all my boxes (or tools)

things got condensed i sold off one roller cab and the matching side box, and everything got shuffled around.
ive been in a service truck since '04, no room for anything bigger than a 26" wide box in the service body.

i kept all the side boxes, and the small roller cab thats behind me.

side boxes in the garage, and in my service truck, roller cab and another side in the basement.

I don't think that will be an issue for me, I'm 6' 5" in boots lol. I'm actually leaning towards a top at this point do to how hard to find a side is going to be.

I searched for a side box for months until finally finding the Husky for $75. One tip, when you see boxes listed for sale on Craigslist with side boxes, email or call them offering to buy just the side box. That's how I scored mine.
