I just got an estimate yesterday to get a side door put into my garage. I'm trying to wrap up a few other house projects before moving to a much overdue garage renovation. The estimate I received was about $400 to cut out the new door and hang the new door in the opening. With me buying the door obviously. I could do this myself but when it comes to cutting a new hole in my home I tend to get alittle nervous especially when dealing with vinyl siding on the other side. I want to see pictures of your doors because my foundation has maybe a 10-12 inch lip to the garage floor. I wasnt trying to put a step into the garage or possibly cut into the foundation but will if needed. Under where that bike tire is I wanted to put the door. About a 32" door would allow it to open without banging into a car. What are your thoughts about that foundation step issue? If you have pics of your door it would help.

$400 sounds like a fair price for the work involved....

Cut the hole.
Install header, king studs and cripple studs
Cut the stem wall (Hopefully you have good drainage on the outside so water won't get in)
Install door and trim out.

If your buying the door but he is doing all the other work....including matching up the trip on the vinyl siding? Then let him do it.

Do you have a concrete saw? Do you have all the trim (J-channel) for you vinyl? Do you have any idea how hard it is to make a horz cut like he will need to do?

For pics....look at one of the last pics in the garage build in my link. I have a side door.

I'd suggest swinging it outward, not in toward the car. This eliminates the need to maintain clear floor space in front of the door, and it prevents wind from blowing the door inward during bad storms (like Irene). Also, how high is the curb around your foundation? The door will probably be 6'-8" high. Raising it up may have a conflict with the garage door track if it swings inside.

BTW, $400 sounds pretty good considering all the work to put it in.

I had a window in mine.. But actually went with two garage doors. A bit extreme for most.
We saw a Mexican food restaurant that was closing, and gutting the place. They
were tossing this door in the dumpster. They gave it to us for free. The guys even
loaded in the truck for my wife. It is almost full double pane glass, except for the bottom
section. This was right after the initial install. I cut the hole, and put in the header, then
called a door company to install the high rise kit, and the spring. The kids loved it..
These are the only pictures that I have right now at work.. We cleaned it up,
and repainted all of the wood.

Those doors sell for more than $400 by themselves, typically. I looked into that and dropped the idea real quick. Non-stock, all special order. For $400, cut the hole, etc - just pay for it and be done. I'm Mr. DIY on that stuff and I'd pay that just to give me more time to screw with something else LOL.

Thanks much for the replies on this. I generally google and search things out to attempt myself but opening a hole in a wall could go south on me quickly. I never actually considered having the door swing outward. Makes sense just figured inswing is just what's generally done. I might have him put a window in next to it as well while at it. I forgot to measure the distance from the ground up, but if the foundation isnt cut the outside isnt bad because you can obviously put a step... just didnt want a step inside.

My steel door is in-swing & 34" wide.
- I have a few muscle cars (Chevelle & Beaumont's) and the doors on the 2 door hardtop's are somewhat long
- never really like parking a vehicle close enough to a wall (less than 3 feet), that the car door cannot fully swing open
The in-swing door, allowed me to hang a white screen door (out-swing) on the exterior / to match the house.
My garage is 2x6" stud wall construction...so my door frame is 6" wide.

If you are putting in a service door, have the foundation cut down to floor level. You'll be glad you did. You don't want to have to step over something or go up and down a step or two just to go through a door.
