Siding over steel?

Here's a real kick in the pants. In the county I'm working to get my steel building approved, they just added code (last week) that any residential or accessory buildings facing a right of way can not have a metallic surface. Apparently residents have been complaining to the building folks that people are building garages/etc. near the street and "they look like oil change or other commercial businesses". Great.

So just on one side, the side facing the road, I need to figure out a way to cover the steel siding and I am wondering WTH I'm going to solve this with. Has anyone else ever heard of anything like this, or had to put a covering/coating/whatever on the side of a steel building? Wood? Vinyl? Animal skins? Spray foam?

See if you can get a variance if it has a wainscoting of stone or something similar. That may be enough to get a free pass.

Let ask this question as well. Is this a metal tube building or red iron/similar ?

Metal tubing. I'm having a pretty civilized conversation with the county so bringing this up at my next call is definitely on deck. Oddly enough I have some wainscoting built in already but just in terms of color. The "no metallic material" is really the killer but at least they only need it on one side of a 45x48 structure.

Your building is already there? They can't make you change something that met requirements at the time it was built.

If it hasn't been built yet I wouldn't think you would have to put steel siding on plus something else over the top of it - delete the steel siding.

If it's not built why are you putting steel on then wanting to go over it with something else? That sounds like trying to solve a problem after the building is done.

Just sheath over the framing and use whatever siding meets the requirements.

It ***** when they add new requirements while you're trying to get a permit.

I don't know how to put wood siding on a tubular frame metal building. The metal skin is part of the structure and without it there's not a lot you can attach siding to. Can you do a pole barn instead? I think you can use siding on those if they are engineered for it ahead of time. The cost might not be to much different.

We just got good news. Because the rule was implemented on the day we applied we are grandfathered in and don't need to do anything about the side facing the street. It kind of ***** for anyone else, but at least they'll know it up front.

You're lucky you can do pole barn style metal siding at all. I couldn't find a suburb in the Minneapolis area that would allow it, except maybe on a multi-acre site. The acreage required would cost $1 million, or more, in those cities before even building anything on the lot. They still might not allow a tall enough structure to fit my motorhome.

The city I ultimately bought in has a 45 foot height limit for garages and allows 3,000 square feet. The downside is they require five acres to build a building with pole barn type siding. Lots are really big here, but I only have three acres. I had to go with stick built with siding and roofing to match the house.
