I would go with the Poly. It likely comes in a satin finish. Also, I would go with a gray stain on the cabinets or a oil rubbed finish. The oil finish will likely make it look similar to the finish on the Bambo.

Looks good!

I would definitely poly it. I know you can get poly in flat if that is your desire. Also available in satin as Weekend Warrior said. I'd also look into flooring poly, I used it on my cork floor in my laundry room.

Alright, poly it is. I think I have some satin poly already. Any tips on building it up? I'd like to build up a 1/16th layer and have it be smooth so you can't feel the indentations between the planks.

1st coat of poly is down, I'll probably be applying several coats.

Things on the horizon:
- Still looking for a good vise. My tiny Wilton just isn't cutting it. Unfortunately it's hard to find a good vise on CL anymore. Folks seem to have caught on to the craze and want $200 for a Athol with a bent handle and missing jaws.
- Rebuilt workbench doors. They aren't sturdy enough.

Thumbs up on the bench top. Looking really great. Yours is one of the best I have seen on here, taken from it's original shape to what you have now. You have done a great job and it is fantastic looking.

Best Regards

Great job! My garage is about the same size, and I'm stealing about 75 % of your ideas!! I just need to get off of my lazy a** and do it...

Man, that thing looks good! Can't wait to see how that satin finish will look. That poly should seal it up well and keep it from soaking up oils and liquids. Will also make it easier to clean.

I've got about 6 coats of poly down now. One thing I don't want to happen is for liquids to seep into the MDF, swell, and buckle the flooring. I don't think that will happen now.

For those that are curious, yes I will be working on this thing! I won't be rebuilding engines on it, but I'm not going to treat it like a museum piece. If it doesn't hold up, I'm out about $70 at this point.

Here it is with satin poly. You can't really tell it's there. I'll probably do one more coat tonight.

I also got a mat for one side of the bench. Man, it's hard to find some decent rubber material for a workbench mat. Everything I found was either too small, too expensive, too thick, designs all over, etc. I finally settled on cheap utility mat that I got at Target and cut to size.

I really dig the cabinets. I'm needed something to go over my workbench but I have a bulkhead of HVAC stuff along the ceiling right there so I'm needing something custom. I may have to model a set off of yours.

Keep up the good work. It's looking great.

Just finished reading the thread, there's a few things I love about this shop:

1: No fear of the confined space. I love my single car garage, because it becomes a 'multitool' by taking on all different tasks in a tight unit.
2: Quality workmanship. Looks like you put effort in and it shows. woodwork, electrical, drywall, paint, etc. All very pro looking.
3: The paint scheme. Great colour choices, painting everything really ties it together.

This is one of my faves, great work, keep it up!

Thank you. I am certainly not a pro but I've been building and wrenching since I was 16 (28 now). I try to do things right the first time. What matters most to me is durability, aesthetics, and of course space efficiency. I do a lot of research on the internet before I do something and get help from family members when necessary. I look for tools and materials that will last me a lifetime, and I'm willing to pay extra to get them. Of course, I am still on a budget, so I try to buy those items as cheaply as possible. Thanks to this forum, I have quite the collection of high quality tools.

I really like your fold down work bench, and I'd like to build one similar to yours.
But I didn't quite get how the legs are hold in place against the wall and how they are swung in & out. Would you please take a picture that show how the legs are hold in place, or explain it to me. Greatly appreciate and thanks very much.

How is the paint on the tool box holding up? Thinking about painting mine. You used all rustoleum products correct? Primer, paint, clear?

Holding up great, actually better than I expected. I've banged it with tools on accident several times with no chipping. I did 2 coats primer, 3 coats base, 2 coats clear.

Awesome, I've been wanting a flat black box. :D

Did you scuff and primer over the original coating or strip everything first?

Allinon, really great project....I too have a small single with my KTM 200 and a '74 914 housed in their....this work surface is exactly what I need. Your project has made me realize I don't need to work in a largely dark and dingey space...like many of the garages on here really great work and inspirational too. Thanks for the thread! Grant

Truly inspiring thread. The quality of your work, some with just scrap or basic materials, is phenomenal. I know sometimes pictures hide the ugly details, but if your place is even a quarter as nice as it seems in these pictures it is remarkable.

BTW, I settled on the same table saw myself back in early 2011 after working with a finish carpenter who had the same model--I love it, hope it's working out for you as well.

Love the saw, I am able to get it out and break it back down again in about 30 seconds. My only complaint is the lack of being able to run dado blades.

Great job on your garage! The color scheme, space and utility of the garage are great.

I have MDF on my bench surface too, I painted it, but not any colors I really like. Bamboo flooring is a cool idea. I'm just worried it would get ugly really quickly with some of my projects.

I'm looking forward to how your garage will look when you do the flooring. Congrats on your results!

I finally decided on a finish for the cabinets I built over the winter. Went with a honey maple gel stain and satin poly finish. It did not get quite as dark as I wanted. As an additional detail, I painted the rabbit in the doors blue to give some contrasting color.
