When I first went back to this shop after being gone for 20 years I noticed what looked like insulation behind cover where motor starter goes on welder.
The reason I pulled the cover , well the welder got hit on front cover hard when moving it trying to clean up.
I thought I might have broke something and indeed I did. The Bakelite broke into about five pieces and motor starter was history. I was able to find the correct #1 motor starter on ebay for $35.
I decided being both the drill press and welder were old and finding the insulation behind front cover of welder I better get them checked out. I also knew that rats were present in the shop while I was gone for all those years.

This is why some correction is important. In the case of damage to the unit it wasn't grounded. It's WHY it should be wired proper. It may megger, but is subject to change at any given time.
The electrician don't look like he is going to show so I am doing this.
I am going to purchase 3 new outlets for the drill press and welder where nobody could by mistake plug in a 220 volt single phase stove years down the road. The one extra I don't use so that is why I am buying three and doing them all.
This is going to cost me money on something I very rare use but like I mentioned I would hate to cause harm to someone way after I am gone. I would never plug the wrong thing in what I got now but I am going to upgrade it anyway as suggested here.
Planning on getting a four wire outlet and new number 6 wiring cable . My conduit would be the ground where I could tie the 4th wire ( ground ) making sure I connect the other end on welder to frame of the machine. The conduit and ground terminal in the disconnect are bonded as I checked them with my meter.
I would do the same with drill press.
Would I then be safe ?

Make sure to use any color but white or green. The stinger leg should be taped orange.
Buy a 4 wire whip along with a 15-50p. This way you have 3 hots and a ground which you connect to the frame.

This is good and the right way. Glad to see you are willing.
I went over lots of little boogers I did, some others did but not going to leave "ambush" or booby trap equipment. I got a genius works for me some, I tell him don't disconnect tailed safety, tip over type stuff etc.
