I wish sk would just us snap rings instead of those laser guided eye seeking retainer rings. Does anyone know if you could just swap out the retainer rings with snap rings?

It's harder on your rat because it's an older specimen, probably late 30's early 40's. (Quite collectible!)
Snap ring pliers should work though.

Two precision screwdrivers, pinch and lift with the other hand, IF snap ring pliers do not work. Wear safety glasses it will hurt your eye.

I use that same set at work, has additional tips as stated, and will work fine for your ratchet.

Another tip,

Take a mini pick and clean the grease and gunk out of the groove for the retaining ring. The groove is often filled with junk and that can stop the ring from compressing enough to remove the mechanism.
