about a year ago, i ordered a set of tekton double box end flex ratchets from amazon. they arrived, and as i was checking them over i found that one of the ends was jammed. i emailed their tech support, including all my information, and they UPS'd me out a replacement wrench that evening. i had it in two or three days.

gold standard. they just dealt with it.

a few years ago, i received a ratchet from ebay that wouldn't lock in either direction. it was sealed in a factory bag when i got it. apex didnt like that i had bought it off ebay, rather than an authorized seller, but sent me a ratchet repair kit for free.

silver standard. they whined about where i bought it, but provided the kit to repair it for free, without making me call back or talk to several people.

today, i received a SK 45174 3/8" ratchet, also from amazon. it arrived broken. the head is cracked radially around the selector dial, and a piece is missing. the piece is not in the bag, which to me implies that it happened somewhere before it was put in the bag at the factory.

i contacted SK about a replacement. at first, they told me i needed to return it to amazon. when i asked if that meant that since it was new, i needed to return it to the seller, but if it were a year old they would warranty it, they told me i could ship it back, but would have to pay for shipping.

so, my reward for buying a US made, more expensive tool is that the company tries to get out of dealing with it, telling me to return it to the seller. when i mention the warranty, they tell me i will have to pay for shipping to return it to them.

Seems to me that you could find someone in your area that sells SK, and take it there for exchange like you would Craftsman.

That is a bummer. SK should be trying their hardest to keep customers happy.

That being said, I'm not sure why you would want to warranty directly via SK when you bought on Amazon. Amazon has an outstanding warranty program for whatever they sell and I think Amazon will even pay all shipping. Skip SK and deal with Amazon.

I dont see the problem here.
SK clearly states their warranty on their website.
What they advised follows that exactly.
Your better option is to return it to Amazon for a replacement.
SK is certainly not trying to get out of handling the warranty as is being implied.

There aren't many companies that come close to Tekton's customer service... I know a tech who has all he usual sockets from them via Amazon and he gets truck grade service - sometimes even better! I've seen a few SK tools but instore support is unavailable to me, so I am hesitant to buy.

:dunno:Why not just return it to Amazon? Their returns and CS is outstanding... just seems like making an issue out of nothing.

just return the thing to Amazon, say it was broken, they will pay for the return and buy a new one.
Don't bash S-K just because Amazon sent you a broken ratchet, how does S-K have any control over something like that ?
This is such a ridiculous thread....

If you reread his original post, he says that it was broken and a piece was missing in a sealed bag. Obviously it left the factory that way, which they do have control over.

Ok,so I didn't catch that...my bad.But I still stand behind my original statement,RETURN IT TO AMAZON,they will pay for shipping and replace it if you want another one...OMG:willy_nil:willy_nil:willy_nil:willy_nil:willy_nil:willy_nil:willy_nil:willy_nil:willy_nil:willy_nil:willy_nil:willy_nil:willy_nil:willy_nil:willy_nil

This example reinforces my original assessment of S-K:

The best tools they make are the tools they don't make; i.e., pliers and pry bars.

That sticker on the bag is Amazon returns department. Amazon either resold something a customer returned for credit, probably broke it then wanted their money back. Or the OP bought a USED ratchet from warehouse deals. Sorry tool drama lovers but SK did nothing wrong here.

I wish every business was Gold Standard. But .... There are other threads on GJ praising SK warranty service. Read their warranty (I haven't). I don't think SK is trying to squelch on this. Not in their best interest. Sounds like this particular piece was sent out defective. It happens. Good companies make good on a problem like this.

Which sticker? There's a sticker on top of a sticker.

LPN RR is a barcode for returned merchandise. Only way to get one on a new item is to purchase previously returned goods either sold by amazon or shipped by amazon for third party.

Yeah, there's no issue at all here. You bought the tool through amazon, and it arrived defective. Amazon has to deal with it, and they deal with SK. Later on in the tools life, if it breaks, it becomes SK's problem.

The reading doesn't say sealed, just in a bag, not that I couldn't seal a bag with ease. In this case I don't blame SK, someone is taking advantage of Amazon by abusing how easy it is to return something and the OP is the one that got screwed. This isn't a warranty issue.

As far as paying shipping to send it back to SK...they’re not the only ones who have that policy. I recently sent a 1/2” Williams breaker bar with a sheared anvil back to SO Industrial in Georgia. Cost me about 8 bucks and took about 3 weeks to get it back.

Snap-on is about the only one off hand that pays shipping both ways.

I doubt S-K shipped it this way, An Amazon return seems the most likely issue here. The bags S-K uses are just ziplock style, not really hard to "seal" a new/used item in them.

No one sells SK out of an in town store anymore; those days are long gone.
Not so. Eppy's in Howell,NJ, which is near me, is a full stocking SK dealer. They have an even bigger showroom in Brooklyn, NY. On occasion SK brings their road show to Howell with special discounts.

I have to say, I don’t understand the point of this post. If it’s to get the ratchet replaced, that’s easy...Amazon will take care of it. If it’s to ***** about SK’s quality control that’s another topic altogether.

Tekton’s customer service is second to none! So comparing to them is an awful high standard.

Was that advertised as new or a Warehouse Deal?

For AMZN return purposes it wouldn't matter. This is such a ridiculous thread and I want my 2.3 minutes back after reading through it. Return it to AMZN! Sheesh. Good for SK, they can't control everything their venders do.

2.85 minutes now...

Who in the world contacts the manufacturer for a defective product that just showed up from Amazon? Unreal.

Exactly! The only place around me is berlands house of tools. Theyre phasing them out however, due to sk warranty service and trying to restock certain items.

That might explain why it has ALWAYS.....been so hard to get local retailers to warranty SK tools. I always thought it was just counter people on a power trip. But maybe the retailers have a hard time getting compensated for warranty exchanges...?? Don't get me wrong...i love SK tools..have since i was a kid.. and own lots of them.. But forget about their warranty. I did the mail in thing 2 months ago with a cracked socket...got my new socket..but what a PITA...and took 14days.

SK sends out head kits like they are water to keep people happy so either have them send a head kit or return to Amazon. SK assembles ratchets by hand so I doubt it was broken when assembled and originally sent out it was fine and something happened on a vendors watch or in shipping.

This thread reminds me of that idiot that made a post late last year, about ordering a Snap-on ratchet and receiving Gearwrench. For God's sake, don't do anything to actually resolve the issue...just ***** to a bunch of strangers on the internet.

Well at least that was minimally entertaining in that people initially called him a liar until they discovered GW in the Snap-On catalog.

The head is literally broken like someone put the pipe to it until it puked its guts. Round heads in general are usually extremely strong (vs a pear head) but when you hit the torque limit they occasionally take the ratchet head out as in the OPs case.

this is a bs thread. i agree someone hatched out a ratchet and sent it back to amazon.

sk is available through many other places other than amazon. pick a reputable place and buy from them.

I just did a quick search on LPN RR stickers and this appears to be right (learn something new on GJ all the time - thanks Skin). It was a previous return to Amazon and probably somehow busted by the previous buyer. This is Amazon's fault for reselling it. Not SK.

And I agree with others who say just contact Amazon and return to them. It's quick and easy and they're the ones who should take care of this. Probably took OP more time to make this thread than call Amazon.
